Chapter 51: The New Millennium – 2000–2001
The dawn of the new millennium was celebrated with unprecedented fanfare across Zeelandia. In Koningstad, a million people gathered around the royal palace as fireworks painted the sky. King Adrian, now one hundred years old, appeared on the balcony with his family. The crowd roared.
"We have survived a century of war, revolution, and transformation," Adrian said into the microphone. "Now we face a new century with hope and determination. Zeelandia will lead."
Behind him stood Princess Ingrid (his daughter), Crown Prince Alexander (his grandson, now fifty years old), Queen Wilhelmina (Adrian's wife, frail but present), and Professor Elias Bergman's great‑nephew, Dr. Markus Bergman, who had become a respected economist.
The celebration continued for days. But Adrian knew that the new century would bring new challenges.
In February 2000, the dot‑com bubble finally burst. The KIX index, which had soared to dizzying heights, collapsed by 40%. Thousands of investors lost fortunes. But Zeelandia's economy, diversified and resilient, weathered the storm.
Cornelis van der Berg VII, the central bank governor, addressed the nation. "This is a correction, not a crisis. Zeelandia's banks are sound. The Future Trust is secure. We will recover."
Pieter van Dijk and Hendrik de Wit, the founders of OmniSoft, saw their personal wealth shrink by billions. But they remained calm. "We built a company, not a stock price," van Dijk said. "OmniSoft will endure."
Lucas van der Heijden, the founder of StreamSphere, used the crash to acquire struggling competitors. His streaming platform grew stronger.
In November 2000, the United States presidential election between George W. Bush and Al Gore ended in chaos. The Supreme Court ultimately decided the outcome. Zeelandia watched with fascination.
Ambassador Johanna van der Heijden (now retired but still consulted) advised Adrian. "America is divided. The new president will have a narrow mandate. Zeelandia should maintain its independent course."
Adrian agreed. "We will work with whoever wins. Zeelandia does not take sides in American politics."
