Chapter 13 - THE REAL VILLIAN

The car moved fast.

Too fast for comfort.

Streetlights blurred past the windows, stretching into long streaks of yellow and white.

Kavya sat in the passenger seat, her fingers clenched tightly together.

"Where is he?" she asked.

Dev Singh kept his eyes on the road.

"Still inside the campus," he replied.

Kavya's heart tightened.

"He won't last long against them," she said.

Dev didn't respond immediately.

Then—

"He's lasted this long," he said.

That wasn't reassurance.

But it was something.

Kavya looked out the window.

Her thoughts racing.

Everything felt like it was spiraling faster now.

Too fast to control.

Too fast to understand.

"Who are they?" she asked suddenly.

Dev exhaled slowly.

"They don't have a single name," he said.

Kavya frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means they don't exist officially," Dev continued.

"No records. No identity. No proof."

Kavya shook her head.

"That's impossible."

"No," Dev said calmly.

"It's just well hidden."

A pause.

"Then how do you know about them?" she asked.

Dev's grip on the steering wheel tightened slightly.

"Because I've been chasing them for years."

Kavya looked at him.

"And you haven't caught them yet?"

Dev glanced at her briefly.

"If it was that easy… your life wouldn't look like this right now."

Silence.

Kavya leaned back slightly.

"And what exactly are they hiding?" she asked.

Dev didn't answer right away.

Instead—

He asked something else.

"What do you think happens when information becomes dangerous?"

Kavya frowned.

"People try to hide it," she said.

Dev nodded.

"And if hiding isn't enough?"

A pause.

Kavya's voice lowered.

"They destroy it."

Dev's eyes darkened slightly.

"Exactly."

The realization hit her slowly.

"They're not just hiding secrets…" she whispered.

"They're erasing them."

Dev didn't correct her.

Because she was right.

The car suddenly slowed.

Kavya looked ahead.

They were near the back side of the campus now.

Dark.

Quiet.

"Stay here," Dev said.

Kavya immediately shook her head.

"No."

"This isn't a debate," he replied.

"It is for me," she shot back.

Dev looked at her.

Long.

Evaluating.

Then—

"Fine," he said.

Kavya didn't wait.

She opened the door and stepped out.

The night air felt colder now.

Sharper.

They moved quickly toward the building.

Kavya's heart pounded with every step.

Aarav…

Inside—

The corridor was silent.

Too silent.

Dev moved ahead carefully.

"Something's wrong," he said.

Kavya's chest tightened.

"What do you mean?"

Dev didn't answer.

Instead—

He quickened his pace.

They turned the corner—

And then—

They saw it.

Two men.

On the ground.

Unconscious.

Kavya's eyes widened.

"Did he do this?" she whispered.

Dev crouched down, checking one of them.

"Yes," he said.

A pause.

"But that's not the problem."

Kavya's heartbeat spiked.

"What is?"

Dev stood up slowly.

"The third one is missing."

Silence.

Heavy.

"Which means?" Kavya asked.

Dev looked ahead.

"He's not done yet."

A sudden sound echoed from deeper inside.

A thud.

Kavya didn't wait.

She ran.

"Kavya!" Dev called.

But she didn't stop.

She followed the sound—

Through the corridor—

Into a darker section of the building.

Her breath uneven.

Her heart racing.

Then—

She saw him.

Aarav.

Standing in the middle of the hallway.

And in front of him—

One man.

The last one.

Holding something in his hand.

A small device.

Kavya slowed.

"What is that?" she whispered.

Dev caught up behind her.

And his expression changed instantly.

"Move back!" he shouted.

But it was too late.

The man smiled.

A cold.

Calculated smile.

And then—

He pressed the button.

Nothing happened.

At first.

Then—

A screen on the device lit up.

And displayed something.

A symbol.

The same symbol they had seen before.

Kavya's breath caught.

"What is this?" she whispered.

Aarav didn't move.

Didn't speak.

He just stared at the device.

Like he already knew.

The man laughed softly.

"You really thought you were close to the truth?" he said.

Silence.

Then—

He looked at Kavya.

And said something that changed everything.

"You're not the target."

Kavya froze.

"What?" she whispered.

The man's smile widened.

"You're the key."

The words hit like a shockwave.

Kavya's mind went blank.

"Aarav…" she said softly.

But Aarav wasn't looking at her.

His eyes were locked on the man.

And for the first time—

There was something else in them.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Recognition.

"You…" Aarav said slowly.

The man tilted his head.

"Finally," he said.

"You remember."

Silence.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Kavya looked between them.

"You know him?" she asked.

Aarav didn't answer.

Because he didn't need to.

The truth was already there.

And it was worse than anything she imagined.

The man stepped forward slightly.

His voice calm.

Almost amused.

"You've been chasing shadows for years, Aarav," he said.

A pause.

"Now… you're finally standing in front of one."

Kavya's heart pounded uncontrollably.

Because deep down—

She understood.

This wasn't just another member.

This was someone important.

Someone higher.

Maybe—

The one pulling the strings.

Dev stepped forward slowly.

"Enough games," he said.

The man looked at him.

And smiled again.

"Inspector," he said.

No fear.

No hesitation.

"Still trying to be the hero?"

Dev's expression hardened.

"I'm ending this."

The man chuckled.

"No," he said.

"You're just getting started."

And then—

Everything went dark.

The lights shut off instantly.

Complete darkness.

Kavya gasped.

"Aarav!"

No response.

Footsteps echoed.

Fast.

Confusing.

Then—

Silence.

The lights flickered back on.

And he was gone.

The man.

Gone.

Like he was never there.

Kavya's chest rose and fell rapidly.

"What just happened…?" she whispered.

No one answered.

Because no one fully understood it yet.

But one thing was clear—

This wasn't over.

Not even close.

Aarav looked down.

At the device left behind.

The symbol still glowing.

And beneath it—

One word appeared.

"BEGIN."

Aarav's voice was low.

Almost a whisper.

"This…"

He looked at Kavya.

"…was never just about survival."

Kavya's heart sank.

"Then what is it about?" she asked.

Aarav's eyes darkened.

And his answer—

Changed everything.

"It's about control."
