Chapter 14 - Around the World PT 2

February 10th, 2011

Wakanda.

"The entire world is holding its breath as an asteroid the size of New Jersey is on course to collide with Earth within the hour…

…Governments across the globe, along with NASA, are working tirelessly to find a solution to protect Wakanda and prevent this asteroid from entering the atmosphere…

…The Fantastic Four have arrived at the site of the predicted collision. The world's first super family has promised they will find a solution…

…NASA, in collaboration with several governments, has just sent multiple missiles into the atmosphere in the hopes that the asteroid will be destroyed—or, if not, broken into smaller pieces that would result in a less catastrophic impact.

…The Wakandan Government has remained silent in regard to the cataclysmic event about to unfold on their lands. Wakanda is rumored to house the rare metal Vibranium, considered one of the strongest metals on Earth, yet the nation is otherwise known for its isolationist policies…

…And the rockets have missed their mark!…

…The team at NASA is devastated that we were unable to succeed in preventing the asteroid from entering the atmosphere. In collaboration with nearby relief efforts, we have ensured the evacuation of those who wished to leave…

…King T'Chaka remains silent as the asteroid has entered the atmosphere and is on course to collide with land in two minutes. Reed Richards has assured us that his team has found a solution. Yet despite the man's intellect, many still doubt his claims…

…The asteroid, designated Asteroid W, has broken the stratosphere and is on track to coll—"

Every news anchor went silent at the sight of the flaming asteroid being stopped dead in its tracks by an invisible force.

Nearby helicopters and cameras zoomed in on both the asteroid and the Fantastic Four. Many initially believed it was due to their efforts, but when they noticed the superheroes looked just as stunned, every gaze shifted back to the asteroid.

Then the unthinkable happened. Instead of continuing its descent toward Wakanda, the asteroid began moving upward, back toward space.

It was Johnny Storm, otherwise known as the Human Torch, who flew down in front of the Fantastic Four with a disbelieving smile on his face. "It's Guardian… He… he stopped the asteroid and is pushing it back into space."

Every camera locked onto the conversation, many picking up the Human Torch's words before snapping back to the asteroid as it continued its impossible ascent. Lenses zoomed in as far as they could.

Sure enough, barely visible and comically small at the base of the asteroid, was the newest hero, Guardian, holding it aloft with both hands. His muscles strained against his suit as he steadily forced the massive rock higher and higher, until both he and the asteroid vanished into the clouds.

The entire world fell silent, nearly four billion people glued to their screens, witnessing a moment that would be etched into history.

Then the Human Torch began to clap.

The sound that followed was deafening.

In households across the world, people erupted into celebration.

Those watching in Times Square jumped up and down in joy, loved ones embracing, couples kissing, children cheering as they mimicked Guardian's pose.

A few minutes later, the silhouette of Guardian pierced the clouds once more, now bereft of the asteroid that had threatened to wipe out an entire country.

He barely looked winded. A bright, almost boyish smile spread across his face as he landed, only to be instantly swarmed by reporters and government officials.

"Guardian, how did you do it? How did you lift that aster—"

"…What are your thoughts on Wakanda not responding to their impending doo—"

"…Guardian, the people of Kenya thank you for your intervention—"

"…Guardian, where is the asteroid? Is there any need for us to fear it returning in the future?"

"…Sir, we're going to have to ask you to come with us to answer a few questions."

Guardian tried to respond as the questions were fired at him from every direction, but everything came to a halt when the last voice, no, the last group, spoke.

The entire time he had been fielding questions, Guardian wore an easy smile, a faint blush even. But the moment his green eyes settled on the group of men and women dressed in suits and American military uniforms, his expression hardened.

The shift was immediate, and noticeable.

It left many wondering: did Guardian have negative feelings toward the United States Government?

If so… why?

"Am I under arrest?" Guardian asked calmly, his voice cutting cleanly through the noise. Reporters instinctively stepped back as the government officials stiffened.

"Well… no, but—"

"Then I'm not interested."

He turned, already beginning to walk away before pausing slightly. "And to answer your question, Doctor Richards, there's no need to worry about the asteroid returning. It's currently sitting steady on the surface of Mars."

With that, Guardian took off in a gust of wind, leaving behind a stunned, silent crowd.

Until Johnny Storm broke it, voicing what everyone was thinking.

"Did he just say Mars?"

Himalayan Mountains

Strange reports had been trickling down from the Himalayas over the past week—rumors of gargoyle-like creatures emerging from a wormhole in the sky.

It had all started five days prior, but the world had been too focused on the asteroid heading toward Wakanda, and Guardian stopping it, to pay much attention.

SHIELD had kept an eye on the situation, dispatching a team to investigate the reports.

They arrived and surveyed the area for five days, finding no sign of the strange creatures the locals had described. Eventually, they began packing up their camp, preparing to move on.

That was until a wormhole tore open above the mountain peak, and the creatures poured out.

Grey-skinned and grotesque, resembling living gargoyles, they streamed from the portal in droves.

Nearly five thousand emerged before they finally paused, parting to allow a much larger figure to descend.

Twenty feet tall and built like living stone, the creature landed among its army with a heavy impact, leaving the SHIELD agents and local military forces stunned at the sudden escalation.

Several agents immediately began frantically calling up the chain of command, reporting what could only be described as an alien invasion force. The nearby military personnel did the same.

The highest-ranking SHIELD agent on site stepped forward cautiously, approaching the mass of creatures as they finally took notice of the humans.

The gargoyles parted, forming a path that led directly to their apparent leader, who looked even more imposing up close.

"Halt. You stand before Gorgolla, son of our esteemed King Granitor of the Stonus System. Who goes there?" one of the creatures demanded.

[Insert Image of Gorgolla Here]

"I am Agent Ross of SHIELD. What business do your people have with Earth?" the man replied, his tone steady despite the tension in the air.

The Stonians chuckled at that, Gorgolla's booming laughter echoing across the mountainside.

"To conquer it, of course. Why else would we come to this backwater planet?"

A few of the agents shifted uneasily, silently hoping their calls had gone through, that backup was already on the way.

"I'm afraid I can't allow that to happen," Agent Ross responded.

Gorgolla smirked, a low rumble escaping his throat. "Yeah? And who exactly is going to stop me?"

"That would be me."

Both the SHIELD agents and the Stonians looked up at once, drawn to the voice cutting through the cold air.

Hovering above them was a man clad in a white and gold suit, a gleaming emblem set at the center of his chest.

Relief washed over the SHIELD agents and military personnel, while the Stonians regarded him with open skepticism.

Gorgolla rose to his full height, wings flaring behind him and kicking up clouds of snow as he lifted himself to meet the newcomer in the air.

Even at the same elevation, Gorgolla still towered over him.

The man didn't so much as flinch.

"And you think a puny human like you can take me?" Gorgolla asked, his voice dripping with amusement.

The flying man grinned.

"Let's find out."

AN -

Version two of me finding random Marvel Characters on the Wiki for Guardian to fight. This one was so random that even I was surprised by it. I did change the characters storyline, making him more one-dimensional then his comic book counterpart.

Once more a lot of people might complain about my decision to have an Asteroid head towards Wakanda, but I have some plans for Wakanda in the future that will come about because of this event.

I've seen the feedback on the suits, some like the color, some enjoy the white and gold. I'll make a poll soon to come to a final decision.
