"Professor, I do understand that much."
Looking at Professor X as he tried to reason with him so earnestly, Fenris felt a little helpless.
The professor really was terrified he might turn into someone like Magneto.
"Oh, right, Professor. I also sorted through some classified material over the last couple of days. I got all of it from Stryker. You'll probably want to take a look."
Seeing that the professor was about to say more, Fenris hurriedly pulled out a thick stack of files and dropped them onto the desk.
"Sentinel robots?"
Professor X's attention was immediately diverted. After reading for a while, his brows drew tightly together.
"If this project is still moving forward in secret, it will be a catastrophe, not just for mutants, but for humanity as well."
A moment later, the professor came to his conclusion with absolute certainty. "No. I need to contact Erik. He has to keep Raven in check. We cannot let this project continue to develop."
As he spoke, Professor X had already gathered up the files and hurriedly drove his wheelchair toward the door.
"Professor, I'm not sure whether Jean's awake yet, but I'm planning to make a trip to the Triskelion. She shouldn't lose control during this time, right?"
Even though he already knew the Phoenix had likely fallen dormant, Fenris still could not stop himself from asking as he looked at the professor's retreating back.
"Jean is awake. Her condition is stable now, and she can already use that power in simple ways."
When the subject turned to Jean, the professor paused for a moment. "It's thanks to you that everything went smoothly."
"That's good."
Watching the professor's figure gradually disappear from view, Fenris let out a quiet sigh. He casually opened a portal, tossed Nick Fury's three projection devices to Hank, then finally strolled out the door.
"Hey, Coulson."
Fenris flashed a grin.
"Fenris."
The bored-looking Coulson turned back and greeted him, though his eyes could not help drifting toward the office.
"What are you looking at?"
Fenris slung an arm around the middle-aged man, who was a head shorter than him, and dragged him outside without giving him any chance to object. "Your director, Nick Fury, just told me my reactor is ready."
"I've got time right now, so come with me to the Triskelion and we'll deliver what Fury wants."
"But that projection tech is our latest technology. I need to take it back..."
"Oh, come on. Let's go already."
Coulson kept looking back every few steps, but he was too weak to resist and ended up being hauled bodily out of the school.
"So..."
When they reached the parking area and Fenris saw Coulson skillfully climb into a beat-up old car, he frowned deeply, his face full of disgust. "We're taking that to New York?"
"Fenris, don't underestimate Lola."
After adjusting his seat, Coulson proudly patted the steering wheel. "Lola may look old, but she's actually equipped with a flight system. She can even take off and land vertically..."
Once the subject of his beloved car came up, Coulson was like a man who had opened the floodgates. He immediately started rambling nonstop.
"Coulson, want to experience what it feels like to fly with your own body?"
Fenris suddenly asked.
"What do you mean?"
The abrupt question made Coulson freeze. Before he could react, a powerful arm had already reached out from the side and casually lifted him up.
The next second, Lola began shrinking in Coulson's field of vision, followed by the sprawling grounds of Xavier's School.
Fenris carried Coulson straight up into the sky. In no time at all, they broke through the clouds, and a blink later, the outline of the land below had already become clear.
"Ah! Ah, slow down, slow down!"
As a trained agent, Coulson's mental fortitude was already exceptionally strong, but being yanked into the upper sky without warning was a first even for him.
So for a moment, he was badly shaken. He clung tightly to Fenris's arm, not daring to let go at all.
"Don't be scared, Coulson. There aren't many people on Earth who get to experience this."
"What?"
Suddenly noticing that Fenris's voice had become sharper and clearer, Coulson instinctively froze for a second.
But in the next instant, Fenris's appearance began changing right before his eyes.
His strong human arms transformed in the blink of an eye into insect-like limbs covered in fine fuzz.
Then came six long legs, one after another, along with a tail lined with sharp spikes.
Most importantly, the radiant wings that had originally stretched more than ten meters began solidifying and expanding at incredible speed.
In the space of a breath, two pairs of wings covered in intricate and beautiful patterns quietly appeared. On the forewings was even a design that looked strikingly like Godzilla's eyes, cold and imposing.
"Fenris, you..."
Watching Fenris transform before his eyes into a gigantic "butterfly" with a wingspan of nearly twenty meters, even someone as experienced and well-traveled as Coulson, a man who prided himself on having seen every kind of big scene imaginable, could not stop himself from going stiff. He trembled, unable to force out even a complete sentence.
Staring at Fenris's enormous compound eyes, Coulson barely managed to put together a strained smile.
"Coulson, have you ever experienced breaking the sound barrier with your own body?"
Hearing Fenris's voice come from overhead, a sudden sense of dread surged up in Coulson's heart.
"Let's fly!"
A loud cry of pure exhilaration rang out. Two pairs of shimmering wings instantly tensed, immense power surged forth, and the air screamed under violent vibration.
Their speed began climbing rapidly. Fenris's body immediately turned into a blur as he shot forward like lightning.
"Fu-"
Even though Fenris had leaned forward to shield him, the airflow created by their high-speed flight was still unbelievably violent. The instant Coulson opened his mouth, wind poured into it, and he could not squeeze out even half a sentence.
"How does it feel?"
Fenris shifted again, protecting Coulson more fully behind him.
Their speed was fast, but Fenris's control over acceleration was precise. The G-forces were not too severe, and the overload never pushed ordinary human limits far enough to truly endanger Coulson.
"Amazing!"
Reflected in his pupils were the buildings on the ground rushing past at incredible speed, his throat bobbing hard as he swallowed. Once he gradually adapted to the steady thunder in his ears, Coulson turned his head and looked at Fenris's beautiful wings.
Most of the airflow had been blocked off, and the adrenaline-fueled thrill finally made it impossible for him not to shout.
Boom!
The powerful wall of air was effortlessly shattered. After a thunderous sonic blast that cracked across the sky like a bolt from nowhere, a nearly invisible afterimage streaked through the air.
Only moments later, New York was already right in front of them.
Taking into account that Coulson probably could not tank a surface-to-air missile with his face the way he could, Fenris ultimately chose a secluded spot outside the city to land.
"This is a hundred times more exciting than a Quinjet!"
"That was incredible!"
Even after they touched down, Coulson was still reliving it.
"It's just..."
He instinctively reached up and touched his hair. For some reason, the top of his head felt oddly chilly after all that wind.
"All right. Time to handle actual business."
Fenris extended a hand and cheerfully opened a portal. On the other side, Coulson's old car, Lola, was sitting there quietly.
"Huh?"
The sight made Coulson freeze. He stared blankly at Fenris. "What is this, some kind of space gate?"
In utter disbelief, he cautiously stuck his head through the portal and looked back and forth several times.
On the other side of the portal was Xavier's School - the very place they had just taken off from.
"Fenris, are you messing with me?"
"With this kind of ability, you still dragged me through all that wind on the way here?"
