Chapter 14 - The return didn't seem to end

Femi did not come back quietly. At first, it was just messages.

I'm sorry.I can change.God is giving us another chance." Aduni blocked him. Then the calls began.

Not to her.

To her friends. "Please talk to her for me." "I've learned my lesson." "She's the only woman for me."

By midweek, two of her friends had already called her. "Aduni, he sounds serious this time." She ended the conversations quickly.

But the real irritation came on Thursday.

Her phone rang during lunch. "Hello, Aduni," a calm, familiar voice said. It was her pastor. She straightened slightly. "Good afternoon, sir."

"I spoke with a young man named Femi," he began gently. "He says you both had a relationship that ended. He sounded… repentant." Aduni closed her eyes slowly.

Here it comes. The pastor continued, "Sometimes, God restores what was broken. Destiny connections don't just happen. It might be the will of God for you to give him another chance."

There was a long silence. When Aduni finally spoke, her tone was respectful. Polite.

But sharp. "Sir… if destiny needs to beg through third parties, is it still destiny?" The pastor paused.

She continued softly, "And if God wants to restore something, I don't think He would use emotional pressure as the method."

Another silence.This time, heavier.

The pastor cleared his throat. "You're very strong-minded, Aduni."

"Yes, sir," she replied calmly. "It's the only way to survive bad decisions."

The call ended politely. But the pastor did not sound pleased.

Femi did not stop. The messages increased. Long paragraphs. Voice notes. Missed calls at midnight.

On Friday, he showed up outside her office gate. Security sent him away.

On Monday, he came again. This time, he waited.

Workers began to notice.

Whispers moved through the office. "Isn't that her ex?" "He's been here since morning." "Why is he begging like that?" Aduni walked past him without a glance.

But inside, her anger was rising. By Wednesday, her concentration was gone. She snapped at a junior staff over a minor error.

Rejected a supplier proposal without reading it fully. Ignored three internal emails.

By afternoon, she received a message from management. They wanted to see her.

The conversation was careful. Professional. "Aduni, you're one of our strongest assets," her supervisor said. "But we've noticed some… emotional strain recently." She kept her face expressionless.

"We don't want you to burn out. We're giving you a one-week leave. Fully paid. Use the time to settle any personal matters."

A pause. "We need you focused when you return." Aduni nodded.

She understood the real message. Get your life under control.

The first day of leave was quiet. For the first time in weeks, she slept late.

No office calls. No meetings. No people needing her strength.

She cleaned the apartment slowly. Cooked something simple.

Sat on the couch and finally exhaled.

Peace.

By evening, the sky had turned grey

She was in the kitchen when the doorbell rang. She frowned.

She wasn't expecting anyone. When she opened the door, her body froze.

Femi.

His eyes were red. His shirt wrinkled. He looked like someone who hadn't slept in days. Her voice came out cold. "How did you find my house?" "I asked around," he said quickly. "Aduni, please. Just listen to me."

Fear moved quietly into her chest.

"You need to leave," she said. He stepped forward instead.

"I can't lose you again. I've lost everything else."

His voice was shaking now. "I love you. I never stopped loving you."

He reached for her arm.

Aduni pulled back sharply.

"Don't touch me." But he kept talking. Fast. Loud. Unstable. "I made a mistake! That girl meant nothing! You're the only one who understands me! God brought me back to you!"

His movements were restless, unsteady, like someone drunk on desperation. Something about his eyes scared her. "Femi," she said firmly, "leave my house." He didn't move.

Instead, he stepped inside. That was when her fear became real.

"Get out!" she shouted. He grabbed his head, pacing now.

"I can't go! I can't go without you! You don't understand what I'm going through!" His voice rose.

Then suddenly, he moved toward her. She ran.

Straight into her bedroom. She slammed the door and locked it, her hands shaking.

Outside, his voice became louder.

Wailing.

Pleading.

Then banging. Her phone was on the bed. It started ringing.

She grabbed it with trembling hands.

Tade. She answered immediately.

Her voice broke the moment she spoke. "Tade… please…" She was crying now.

"He's here… he's in my house… please come with the police… he won't leave…"

Outside the door, Femi's voice echoed loudly. "Aduni! Open the door! I know you're inside! Please don't do this to me!" The banging grew harder.

On the phone, Tade's voice had changed, calm, sharp, alert.

"I'm coming," he said. The line went dead. Aduni backed away from the door, her heart pounding violently. She suddenly wished she had a lazer gun,get this mad man on his knees.

Then the banging stopped. Silence.

Heavy. Wrong. She held her breath. From the other side of the door, Femi's voice came again.

But this time…It was quiet. "Aduni," he whispered. And the bedroom doorknob began to turn.
