CHAPTER 4 – "Sign It… Or Lose Everything"

Zara Valtoria didn't lose sleep over men.

But that night…

Sleep came late.

Not because of fear.

But because of irritation.

Lucien Valtieri had crossed a line—no, several.

He didn't flirt. He didn't negotiate. He didn't play by rules.

He invaded.

And worse?

He did it like he had every right to.

Zara stood in front of her floor-to-ceiling window, city lights flickering beneath her like something she owned—which she practically did. A glass of wine rested in her hand, untouched.

Her reflection stared back at her. Calm. Composed. Untouchable.

But her mind?

Sharp. Calculating.

He wanted her attention.

Fine.

He had it.

Now he would regret it.

The next morning—

Chaos.

"Miss Valtoria, we have a situation!" her assistant rushed in, breathless.

Zara didn't look up from her tablet. "If it's not worse than yesterday, I'm not interested."

"It is."

That made her pause. Slowly, she lifted her gaze.

"Explain."

The assistant swallowed. "Valtieri Holdings just made a public announcement."

Zara's eyes narrowed slightly. "Go on."

"They're launching a joint luxury shipping expansion… using your former European division."

Silence.

Cold.

Controlled.

"And?" Zara asked.

"They've branded it as a strategic dominance move," the assistant added nervously. "And… they mentioned you."

That—

That got her attention.

"What exactly did they say?"

The assistant hesitated.

"Word for word." Zara's voice dropped.

"…'Some empires are built to be admired. Others are built to be taken.'"

The room went still.

Zara's lips curved slowly.

Not in amusement.

In warning.

"He's bold," she murmured.

"Miss Valtoria, the media is already spinning it as a power shift. Investors are reacting. The board is requesting an emergency meeting—"

"Cancel it."

The assistant blinked. "Cancel?"

Zara stood, setting her glass down with quiet precision.

"I don't react publicly," she said smoothly. "I respond privately."

And Lucien Valtieri was about to learn the difference.

One hour later—

Lucien wasn't surprised when she walked in again.

This time—

She didn't wait.

Didn't announce herself.

She entered his office like a storm dressed in black silk.

Sharp. Controlled. Dangerous.

"Careful," she said as the door shut behind her. "You're starting to look desperate."

Lucien didn't even look up from the document in his hand.

"You came back," he said calmly.

Zara's jaw tightened slightly.

"I came to end this."

Now he looked up.

And that gaze—

Dark. Possessive. Certain.

"I told you," he said, rising slowly, "you're not walking away."

Zara stepped closer, placing both hands on his desk, leaning in just enough to make it clear—she wasn't intimidated.

"You used my name," she said. "Publicly."

"Yes."

"Without permission."

"Yes."

Her eyes sharpened.

"You're crossing lines."

Lucien walked around the desk. Slow. Unhurried. Like a predator with no need to rush.

"I don't see lines," he said quietly. "I see opportunities."

Zara straightened.

"You're making this personal."

Lucien stopped in front of her. Close enough to feel the tension.

"It's always been personal."

Silence.

Heavy. Dangerous.

Then—

He reached behind him and picked up a document from the desk.

Held it out to her.

"Sign it."

Zara didn't take it.

Her eyes flicked to the paper… then back to him.

"What is it?"

"A partnership contract."

She laughed. Soft. Disbelieving.

"You steal from me, drag my name through the media, and now you want a partnership?"

Lucien's expression didn't change.

"I don't want it," he said.

A pause.

"I'm giving it to you."

Zara snatched the document from his hand, scanning it quickly.

And then—

Her expression shifted.

Just slightly.

Clause after clause.

Assets. Expansion rights. Shared control over the European division he took.

And then—

Her grip tightened.

"What is this?" she asked, her voice dropping.

Lucien didn't look away.

"The condition."

Zara looked up slowly.

Dangerously.

"You don't get to set conditions for me."

Lucien stepped closer.

"You don't get a choice."

Silence.

Sharp.

Then—

Zara's voice turned cold. Lethal.

"Explain."

Lucien's gaze darkened.

"If you don't sign that contract," he said calmly, "Valtieri Holdings proceeds with full acquisition of your remaining international routes within the next seventy-two hours."

The words hit.

Not loudly.

But heavily.

Zara's eyes didn't move from his.

"You're bluffing."

"I don't bluff."

She searched his face.

And what she found there—

Was certainty.

Real. Solid. Unshaken.

That meant one thing.

He could do it.

And that?

That made him dangerous on a level she hadn't anticipated.

Zara closed the document slowly.

"You think you can force me into a deal?" she asked.

Lucien's voice dropped.

"I know I can."

A long pause.

Then—

Zara stepped closer.

So close their breaths almost touched.

"You're making a mistake," she whispered.

Lucien didn't move.

"So are you," he replied.

Another pause.

Then—

Zara smiled.

Slow. Sharp. Dangerous.

"Let's make something very clear," she said softly.

Her fingers tapped the contract once against his chest.

"I don't sign things under pressure."

Lucien's eyes darkened further.

"Then sign it because you want to win."

That—

That hit differently.

Zara tilted her head slightly. Studying him.

"You think this is about winning?"

Lucien leaned in, his voice almost a whisper now.

"No."

A pause.

"It's about you."

Silence.

And for the first time—

Zara felt it.

Not fear.

Not weakness.

But something far more dangerous.

Being seen.

Targeted.

Chosen.

Her grip tightened on the contract.

Then suddenly—

She turned.

Walked to his desk.

Picked up a pen.

Lucien didn't move.

Didn't speak.

Didn't breathe.

Because this moment—

This decision—

Would change everything.

Zara glanced at the paper one last time.

Then at him.

And smiled.

"Careful what you start, Lucien," she said.

Then—

She signed.

Lucien exhaled slowly.

Not relief.

Satisfaction.

Because now—

She was tied to him.

Legally.

Strategically.

Inevitably.

Zara dropped the pen.

"You wanted my attention," she said coolly.

"Now you have it."

Lucien stepped closer, his voice low and certain.

"I always did."
