Chapter 30 - Chapter 30: The Naïve Uchiha Shisui

At a secluded lakeside within Konoha village.

The last light of the setting sun scattered across the lake's surface, sending ripples of glittering light across the water, while lush vegetation surrounded the area on all sides and cicadas cried in waves, carrying with them a measure of summer tranquility.

Uchiha Shisui, who bore the renowned title of "Shisui of the Body Flicker" throughout Konoha and was celebrated as a once-in-a-century genius of the Uchiha Clan, stood silently at the water's edge.

Shinsuke's silhouette appeared without a sound a short distance behind him.

"Senior Shisui, sorry to keep you waiting," Shinsuke's voice broke the stillness of the place.

Shisui slowly turned around, a gentle smile touching his face.

"Shinsuke, you're here."

"I've been hearing quite a lot about your exploits lately: promoted to Jonin, mastered Lightning Release Chakra Mode, and even developed an S-rank jutsu — truly remarkable."

Shinsuke gave a noncommittal reply and answered modestly, "Merely an empty reputation, not worth mentioning."

He studied Shisui standing before him.

"Shinsuke, I invited you out today because I wanted to talk with you about the clan's future," Shisui came straight to the point, his smile fading somewhat as a weight of gravity settled into his expression.

"The clan's future?" Shinsuke raised an eyebrow slightly. "What thoughts does Senior Shisui have?"

Shisui drew a slow, deep breath.

"Shinsuke, your talent and strength are beyond question and are the clan's hope for the future, but I worry that certain paths you may take could lead the clan toward a dangerous place."

Shisui paused, then continued, "I have always believed that the Uchiha Clan is a part of Konoha, and that we should strive to contribute to the village, coexist with it in peace, and dispel the misunderstandings and wariness the upper leadership harbors toward us, rather than simply pursuing hard-line confrontation."

"I know the elders of the Hawks think highly of you and hope you will lead the Uchiha in fighting for our rights through more aggressive means, but Shinsuke, have you ever considered what fate would await the Uchiha if we were to fully rupture our relationship with the village?"

Having witnessed the ever-deepening rift between the clan and the village since the Nine-Tails incident, Shisui had also felt the subtle but unmistakable suspicion and wariness emanating from the upper leadership.

Shisui yearned for peace and longed for the Uchiha to truly become part of the greater family that was Konoha.

"Senior Shisui, your ideals, I can understand them."

"But have you ever considered what foundation the so-called peaceful coexistence rests upon?"

"Is it built upon the other party's benevolence, or is it built upon us Uchiha bowing and scraping and begging for scraps?"

Shinsuke said without the slightest hesitation, his words dripping with contempt.

"The wariness the village's upper leadership holds toward us Uchiha — where did it come from, and why has it never faded?"

"We were driven to the outskirts of the village, the Guard's authority was stripped away, our clansmen are placed under surveillance... are these things also in the name of peaceful coexistence?"

"Senior Shisui, forgive my bluntness, but the peace you speak of is nothing more than a flower reflected in a mirror and the moon reflected in a lake — it is self-deception!"

"Without absolute strength as your backing, peace will forever be nothing more than a plaything in the hands of the strong!"

"Only when we are powerful enough that no one dares to harbor any ill intentions toward us will that be true peace!"

Uchiha Shisui opened his mouth as if to refute something, but what Shinsuke had said left him with nothing he could counter.

Because every word of it was a bloody, undeniable fact.

Just as the atmosphere had settled into a stalemate, Shisui's eyes suddenly and without any warning tensed ever so slightly.

Shinsuke only felt the scene before him waver faintly, and in the next instant, he found himself in an entirely different place.

The sun shone brightly and birds sang among fragrant flowers.

Konoha village was thriving and prosperous, and the faces of its villagers were all suffused with smiles of happiness.

The Uchiha clansmen mingled intimately with the other villagers, children laughed and played together, and the members of the Guard patrolled every corner of the village with heads held high, respected and beloved by all.

It was an image of incomparable harmony and beauty.

A vision of the Uchiha and Konoha coexisting perfectly, flourishing together in full bloom.

Yet the illusion lasted for barely less than two seconds.

Within Shinsuke's eyes, three pitch-black tomoe suddenly surfaced and began spinning at furious speed.

"Break!"

A low, sharp cry.

The illusion before him shattered like a broken mirror, collapsing into fragments and dissolving into nothing in an instant.

The lakeside was still the same lakeside, and the setting sun was still the same setting sun.

What a masterfully refined genjutsu.

And moreover, it had to be the ocular power of a Mangekyō Sharingan.

Truly worthy of Uchiha Shisui.

Seeing Shinsuke break free of his genjutsu so effortlessly, a flicker of undisguisable surprise passed through Shisui's eyes.

The genjutsu he had just cast, while not at full strength, was not something an ordinary Jonin could easily detect and dispel.

And yet Shinsuke had broken free in an instant.

Furthermore, within Shinsuke's eyes: the Three-Tomoe Sharingan.

"It seems your strength, Shinsuke, is even greater than the rumors suggest," Shisui said with a wry smile, withdrawing the trace of ocular power he had projected outward.

He had wanted Shinsuke to see the future he held dear in his heart.

"Senior Shisui flatters me," Shinsuke replied, his tone remaining calm. "Senior's ocular techniques are truly astonishing."

Shinsuke did not bring up the matter of the Mangekyō.

The time was not right.

Shisui looked long and deep at Shinsuke. "Shinsuke, I know the paths we have chosen may differ."

"But I still hope that we can both strive for the clan's future."

"Perhaps one day, though we walk different roads, we will arrive at the same destination."

Shinsuke gave a slow nod. "I agree; whatever road we walk, the clan's interests will always come first."

Though Shisui's ideals leaned toward the Doves and were even somewhat naïve, his loyalty to the clan and his spirit of protection were beyond question.

Moreover, Shisui's strength was not to be underestimated.

Without absolute certainty, Shinsuke had no intention of driving Shisui completely to the opposing side.

A Uchiha Shisui who possessed the Mangekyō Sharingan, if he could be made into an ally, even a temporary one, his value would be immeasurable.

"Then I won't disturb Senior Shisui's enjoyment of the scenery any further," Shinsuke said, and with a flash, he vanished.

By the lakeside, only Shisui remained.

He stared in the direction Shinsuke had departed for a long while without speaking.

"Uchiha Shinsuke..." he murmured softly, "will you be the Uchiha's hope, or will you be... their disaster?"

But he, Uchiha Shisui, as the cornerstone of the Uchiha Doves and as the key figure who might one day unite the clan's strength, had no choice but to make his own decision.
