Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: The Prosecutor

The motel room smelled of cheap coffee and old carpet.

Elena sat on the edge of the pullout couch, the envelope of evidence on her lap, her mother's pendant cool against her skin. Across from her, Viktor slumped in a plastic chair, his face gray with exhaustion. Alexander stood by the window, watching the parking lot. Kira was on her laptop, tapping furiously.

"The prosecutor's name is Diana Reeves," Kira said without looking up. "Federal district. She's prosecuted two of Marcus's associates before—both mysteriously died before trial. She's been looking for a way to get him for years."

"Can we trust her?" Elena asked.

"Trust is a strong word. But she hates Marcus more than we do." Kira turned the laptop around. On the screen was a photograph of a woman in her forties, sharp cheekbones, dark hair pulled back in a severe bun. "She's clean. No offshore accounts, no unexplained wealth. She drives a ten‑year‑old Honda and lives in a two‑bedroom apartment."

Alexander nodded. "When do we meet her?"

"One hour. She's driving out to meet us. Doesn't want to risk Marcus intercepting her at her office."

---

An hour later, a gray sedan pulled into the motel parking lot.

A woman got out. She was shorter than her photograph, dressed in a plain black pantsuit, her eyes scanning the area with practiced caution. She carried a leather briefcase chained to her wrist.

Alexander opened the motel room door. "Ms. Reeves."

"Diana." She stepped inside, her gaze moving from Alexander to Elena to Viktor. "You have something for me?"

Elena stood and held out the envelope. "Everything. Bank records, emails, photographs, and a recorded confession from Viktor."

Diana took the envelope but didn't open it. Instead, she looked at Viktor.

"You're the man who killed her?"

Viktor nodded, not meeting her eyes. "Yes."

"And you're willing to testify?"

"Yes."

Diana's expression didn't change. "You know you'll go to prison for the rest of your life."

"I know."

"Then let's get started."

---

She spent the next two hours reviewing the evidence.

Page by page, photograph by photograph, she laid out Marcus Wolfe's crimes on the motel room's small table. The embezzlement. The trafficking. The murders—including Elena's mother and Elena herself.

"This is enough for an indictment," Diana said finally. "But Marcus has friends everywhere. Judges, politicians, police chiefs. The moment I file charges, he'll know. And he'll run."

"Then we file them anyway," Elena said.

Diana looked at her. "You're Elena Chen. The woman who was supposed to be dead."

"I got better."

A ghost of a smile crossed Diana's lips. "So I heard." She turned to Alexander. "You're providing protection?"

"Kira and I will keep them safe."

Diana nodded. "I'll file the indictment tomorrow morning. But I need you to understand—once I do, there's no going back. Marcus will come after you with everything he has. His money, his lawyers, his killers."

Elena met her gaze. "He already has."

"Then let's finish this."

---

After Diana left, the room fell quiet.

Viktor retreated to the bathroom again. Kira went outside to check the perimeter. Elena sat on the bed, staring at the wall.

Alexander sat beside her.

"Are you scared?" he asked.

"Yes."

"Good. Fear keeps you alive."

She turned to look at him. "In our first life, after I died—did you feel scared?"

Alexander was silent for a moment. Then he said, "No. I felt empty. Fear requires something to lose. I had nothing left."

Elena's chest ached. "And now?"

He reached out and took her hand.

"Now I have everything to lose."

---

They didn't kiss. They didn't say "I love you." They simply sat together, hands intertwined, as the night deepened outside the motel window.

Tomorrow, the war would begin.

Tonight, they held on to each other.
