Chapter 22 - When It Starts Moving.

They didn't get far.

Arjun had just turned the corner of the street, keeping pace with the others as they helped the injured man move, when something behind them changed.

It wasn't a sound at first.

It was the absence of one.

The steady pulse they had heard from the building—the thing that had been guiding everything—cut off.

Just stopped.

Arjun slowed immediately.

"Wait."

The others halted with him.

Meera looked back. "What is it?"

He didn't answer right away. He was listening.

There was nothing.

No pulse.

No rhythm.

Just silence.

"That sound… it's gone," he said.

Nisha turned slightly, her eyes narrowing. "Gone?"

Raghav frowned. "That's a good thing, isn't it?"

Arjun shook his head slowly. "No."

Because something like that didn't just stop without a reason.

A second later—

They heard it.

Not from the building but from the streets.

Fast movement.

Not scattered or random was coming toward them.

"Move," Nisha said immediately.

No one hesitated this time as they turned and started moving down the street, faster now, the injured man struggling to keep up.

"What's happening?" Raghav asked.

"They're not waiting anymore," Meera said.

Arjun didn't need to look to know she was right.

He could hear the footsteps more than before and closer.

He glanced back once and that was enough.

"They're coming this way."

That made everyone's faces dull.

Before, the infected had ignored them.

Now—

They were not.

"Faster," Nisha said.

They picked up pace, turning into a narrower street, trying to break line of sight.

The buildings here were tighter, the path uneven, forcing them to slow slightly.

"Left," Meera said, pointing ahead.

They cut into another alley.

Arjun grabbed the injured man's arm, helping him stay upright. "Stay with us."

"I'm trying," the man said, his voice strained.

Behind them, the sound grew louder.

"They're following the same path," Arjun said.

Nisha didn't slow. "They're tracking us."

Raghav shook his head. "How?"

No one answered because they didn't know, but it didn't matter anyway.

They were being followed and that was enough.

They reached the end of the alley and stepped into another street.

This street was wider and more exposed.

"Not good," Meera muttered.

"No choice," Nisha replied.

They moved quickly across, keeping low.

Arjun looked around and noticed this area was different.

It was more abandoned, more open space between buildings and fewer wandering infected.

That should have felt safer,

It didn't.

"They're pushing us," he said.

Meera glanced at him. "What?"

"They're not just chasing," he replied. "They're directing us."

Raghav let out a breath. "That's not better."

"No," Arjun said. "It's not."

Another sound came from behind.

Closer now.

Too close.

Nisha stopped suddenly.

"Inside," she said, pointing to a half-open building nearby.

No one argued.

They moved quickly inside, pulling the injured man with them.

The door was already broken, hanging slightly off its hinges.

Nisha pushed it enough to close the gap, but not fully.

"Quiet," she said.

They stepped back into the shadows.

The interior was dark, the air stale.

Arjun tried to steady his breathing.

Outside—

The footsteps passed.

Moving,

Following.

Then—

They stopped.

Right outside.

Arjun's grip tightened.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

For a few seconds, everything felt still but then a shape crossed the doorway.

One of them.

It didn't enter.

It paused just for a moment, then moved on.

Arjun let out a slow breath.

"They didn't come in."

Meera shook her head slightly. "They knew we were here."

Raghav looked at her. "Then why didn't they attack?"

That question stayed in the air because none of them had a good answer.

Arjun stepped closer to the wall, keeping his eyes on the narrow gap in the doorway,

"They're still deciding," he said.

"Deciding what?" the injured man asked quietly.

Arjun didn't look at him.

"Whether we matter yet."

Everyone was silent.

Outside, the movement continued.

But it wasn't chaotic, it was like they were just… passing.

After a minute, Nisha spoke softly. "We don't stay here."

Raghav frowned. "You sure?"

"Yes," she said. "If they're directing us, then stopping only helps them."

Arjun nodded slightly.

"That means we don't run randomly," he added. "We choose direction."

Meera looked at him. "Based on what?"

He thought for a second.

Then said, "Away from where they expect."

Raghav let out a quiet breath. "And how do we know that?"

Arjun looked toward the street again.

"They came from behind," he said. "So we don't go forward in the same line."

Nisha understood immediately. "We cut sideways."

Meera nodded. "Break their path."

"Exactly."

The injured man shifted slightly. "Then let's move."

Nisha gave a short nod.

They waited a few more seconds, making sure the immediate area was clear.

Then—

They stepped out carefully.

The street looked empty again but none of them trusted that.

They moved quickly, turning into a different direction than before, cutting across the layout instead of following it.

Arjun kept scanning.

Listening.

Thinking.

This wasn't random anymore.

The system they had seen—

It wasn't staying in one place,

It could reach and react.

And now—

It was moving.

"They're not just controlling areas," he said quietly.

Meera glanced at him. "Then what?"

He didn't look back this time.

"Now they're controlling movement."

No one responded because they all felt it.

They weren't just trying to survive anymore.

They were trying to move in a way that something else couldn't predict.

And that—

Was a lot harder.
