The ruined plates of the grand gate groaned as they ground to a halt, leaving an opening just wide enough for the Void-Galleon to squeeze its massive timbers through. Beyond the threshold lay the inner courtyard of the fortification, but it was far from an open yard. The stone road immediately terminated at the edge of a vast, bubbling canyon through which a river of white-hot molten copper surged, throwing up blinding green and orange flares that licked the cliffs. Spanning this chasm was a singular, massive highway, the bridge of molten copper.
The structure was not made of stone; it was a lattice of dense iron cables, completely submerged beneath the rushing liquid copper, so that any vessel attempting to cross would have to drag its lower hull directly through the boiling, metallic current.
