Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 – A Loving Sacrifice

Today is a holiday for Chenxi. She woke up earlier than usual and, sitting in front of the small mirror with peeling mercury, groomed herself very carefully. "Today I'm going to meet my best friend... are you coming with me too?" she asked, stroking my head with a captivating smile on her lips.

I wagged my tail as if to say "yes." Even though I was trapped inside this fur-covered body of a dog, today my heart held a happiness that words could not describe. We both ran along the streets of Shan'ezhou, playing together. I caught a fallen branch in my jaws and tossed it toward her. Chenxi chased after me, laughing.

In truth, even though we are sisters, there was never time in our unfortunate lives to play freely like this. Tears fell from my eyes because I could not contain the joy.

'Sister... you don't know, do you, that the animal playing with you on this road is actually your own sister?' I whispered in my heart.

We stopped near an old bench in a park. Suddenly, with the sound of soft footsteps from behind, a handsome young man arrived and covered Chenxi's eyes with both his hands.

"Guess who?" The moment I heard that voice, my entire body went cold.

I turned around quickly. My God! It was none other than him... the man who gave me the umbrella in that heavy rain, the one I had longed to see again! My heart suddenly leaped with joy. I prepared to run toward him. But in the next second, my entire world shattered into pieces.

He uncovered Chenxi's eyes with a gaze full of infinite love. Chenxi also looked at him with a smile full of shyness and affection. Seeing the way their eyes met, I understood everything. That beautiful heart I had loved belonged to my own little sister.

I felt a sharp pain as if my heart were being torn apart. I lowered my head. 'Why did fate play such a bitter game with me?' I wept in my heart.

But I looked at Chenxi. I saw her smiling happily. I realized that her innocent smile was worth more than my selfish love. I buried my pain deep within my heart. The two people I loved most in my life were now standing right before me.

The two of them sat on the bench, whispering words of love. Their hands were very close to each other. I slowly went near them. I gently nudged Chenxi's hand and placed it upon Zhonghe's hand.

They both looked at me, startled. Their hands became entwined. "Look, Chenxi... it seems he wants to see the two of us like this," Zhonghe said, smiling.

'Zhonghe! That's a beautiful name...'

Zhonghe held her hand firmly. At that moment, their love officially began amidst the songs of birds. I jumped between the two of them and sat down very comfortably between their hands.

'Take good care of my sister... she is my world,' I said in my heart, looking at Zhonghe.
