The running man reached the pavement and continued without slowing down, apparently more concerned with putting distance between himself and whatever lay behind him than with finding another means of transportation.
Another man emerged from the same direction, followed by a third. The driver swore quietly as he watched them rush past, their hurried movements adding to his growing unease.
"An accident?" Sarah asked, although she was no longer certain she wanted to know the answer.
He shook his head. "I don't know."
Before either of them could speak again, another horn sounded farther ahead, followed by a heavy impact beyond the white SUV. Sarah tightened her grip on her phone and leaned toward the window, trying to see through the narrow gaps between the vehicles. Unfortunately, the congestion obstructed her view, leaving her with nothing but distant shouts and the unsettling sounds of metal striking metal.
