Aiden had moved to the far edge of the clearing without being asked — near the tree line, Rex beside him, both of them facing away. Far enough for privacy. Close enough to respond if something went wrong.
It was the right call. Qalish hadn't asked him to do it. He had just done it.
He understands more than he lets on.
Qalish turned back to Foxy.
She was watching him. The shimmer in the snow around her moved differently — drawn toward her, faintly, like a current finding its source. She had been doing that since they entered the dungeon. More so now, standing in the clearing where the boss had fallen, the ice element still dense in the air.
He opened the system.

Maybe longer than that.
He confirmed the evolution.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
The Frozen Beast Core dissolved first — slow, deliberate, the cold inside it moving outward and then inward toward Foxy in a stream that was visible in the air. Pale blue-white. Not the standard ice color of the dungeon around them — something older, purer.
The Ancient Ice Crystal cracked — a single clean fracture down the center — and the light inside it came out. Not scattered. Directed. Straight to Foxy.
Foxy held still.
The first reaction was silence. The ambient sounds of the clearing — the wind in the frozen trees, the soft settle of snow — stopped. Not dampened. Stopped. Like something had pressed pause on everything outside the two of them.
Then the fourth tail began to form.
It grew from the base of the existing three, slower than the others had — as if the element entering her was being careful, precise. The fire in her first tail, the dark in her second, the void-dark wisps from her third — they shifted around the new growth, making room. Not reluctant. Accommodating. As if they had always known this was coming.
The fourth tail was pale. Almost translucent. Where it moved, the air temperature dropped — not dramatically, just enough. A cold that was different from the dungeon cold around them. Cleaner. More deliberate.

Foxy's eyes changed.
The amber left eye — unchanged. The violet right eye — unchanged. But at the very edge of both irises, something new had appeared. A thin ring, pale blue, the colour of deep ice in old formations. It caught the light differently from the rest of her eyes — steadier, like something that had always been there waiting to be unlocked.
She looked at Qalish.

New species. Again.
Foxy stepped toward him. Four tails moving — the fourth leaving a faint cold trail in the air behind it, visible for just a moment before it dissipated. She stopped in front of him and looked up.
He crouched.
Up close, the changes were more than the tail and the eye-ring. Her fur was still platinum white — the same colour it had always been, clean and pale against the cold air of the clearing. But something moved beneath the surface of it now. Faint lines of light, tracing along each strand from root to tip, the pattern shifting slowly the way embers shifted when something breathed on them — not static, not decorative. Alive. The colours of her elements running through her coat like a current: the deep amber of fire, the dark pulse of void, and at the very edges, where the new tail had formed, something colder and paler still. The fourth element. Not added to her. Woven into what she already was.
She pressed her nose briefly against his hand.
He stayed crouched for a moment.
Four tails. Four elements. C Rank.
Five more to go.
And the ninth element — the one that had no name in any catalogue — still somewhere ahead.
He stood.
---
Aiden had heard the silence fall over the clearing — the complete stop of ambient sound. He had stayed where he was, one hand on Rex's shoulder, both of them watching the far end of the clearing without moving.
When Qalish walked back toward him, Foxy at his side, Aiden looked at the fox.
He said nothing for a long moment.
"Four tails."
"Yes."
"She gained a new element. That cold one that's all through this dungeon."
"Yes."
Aiden looked at Foxy. At the pale fourth tail. At the faint cold that moved with her.
"She looks different. Not just the tail — the way she carries herself. Like something settled."
Qalish looked at Foxy.
It did. It finally did.
"Evolution changes them,"
he said.
"This was her third."
Aiden looked at him.
"Third."
"Yes."
A beat.
"You've never failed one."
It wasn't a question.
"No."
"How."
Qalish met his gaze.
"I prepare."
Aiden held his gaze for a moment. Then looked back at Foxy.
"Three evolutions. No failures. Materials sourced correctly every time. Paths chosen correctly every time."
He wasn't accusing. He was working something out.
"Qalish."
"Mm."
"What are you not telling me."
Qalish looked at him.
Aiden looked back — steady, patient. The easy manner he carried everywhere. But underneath it, something that had been accumulating since the first corridor of this dungeon, every moment Qalish had known something he shouldn't have known, every decision that had landed too precisely.
Qalish said nothing for a moment.
"When I'm ready to tell you,"
he said,
"I will."
Aiden held his gaze.
"Okay,"
he said.
Just that. No push. No pressure.
He looked back at Rex — who had walked over to Foxy and was standing beside her, the two of them side by side in the snow.
"Come on,"
Aiden said.
"Let's go home."
-------------------------------------------------------------------
They left the clearing and retraced their steps through the deep zone — back through the frozen trees, past the place in the wide passage where the thing had been. Nothing there now. Just snow, and the pale sky above, and the cold that was simply cold and nothing more.
Foxy walked the whole way. She didn't return to the Inner Space.
Qalish didn't ask her to.
The dungeon entrance appeared ahead — the stone arch, the world outside visible through it, the temperature shift of real air replacing ice air.
They stepped through.
Afternoon light. The road stretching west. Qalish stood at the threshold for a moment — the dungeon behind him, the city ahead, Foxy at his side with four tails and an element that didn't exist in any standard catalogue.
Aiden stretched his arms wide.
"Real sunlight. Finally."
Rex lifted his nose to the air — reading the outside world after three days underground.
Foxy sat beside Qalish. Looked at the road ahead.

23,120 MP. Enough — for now.
And somewhere behind them in that frozen forest — something the system couldn't read. Something that had looked at them and walked away.
He started walking.
Foxy walked beside him.
