The smell of iron arrived before the words.
Adara had barely crossed the threshold of the fortress when she sensed it. It wasn't fresh blood. It was… tension. Thick. Held back.
Something wasn't right.
"Go change," Caelum said, without pausing. "And don't speak of this."
Adara looked at him.
"Why?"
Caelum didn't turn around.
"Because not everything you do… belongs to your husband."
That stopped her for a second.
But she didn't answer.
She went upstairs.
The corridor to her chambers was silent. Too silent.
When she opened the door—
Karan was awake.
Standing.
Waiting for her.
He wasn't wearing armor.
But his posture was that of a man ready for war.
"Where were you?"
It wasn't a gentle question.
Adara closed the door behind her.
"Training."
Karan took a step toward her.
His eyes lowered.
To her hands.
To her posture.
To that different kind of weariness.
"No," he said with dangerous calm. "That's not training."
Silence.
Adara held his gaze.
"I went out with Caelum."
That was enough.
Karan's jaw tightened.
"Without telling me?"
"It wasn't my decision."
"It's always your decision."
That… wasn't entirely true.
And they both knew it.
A tense second.
Karan moved closer.
Too close.
"Were you attacked?"
Direct.
Adara didn't respond immediately.
Mistake.
Karan noticed.
His expression changed.
Not to anger.
To something worse.
"You were attacked."
Adara exhaled.
"We handled it."
"'We handled it'?" he repeated, barely containing his disbelief. "Is that what they told you to say?"
"That's what happened."
Karan stepped back, running a hand over his face.
"How many?"
"Four."
Silence.
"And you?"
"I'm here."
Karan gave a short laugh.
No humor.
"That's not an answer."
Adara took a step toward him.
"I don't need you to protect me from everything, Karan."
He looked at her.
"No. But I need to know when you're in danger."
"I was," she replied calmly. "And I didn't break."
That hit him.
Because it was true.
But it didn't reassure him.
"That's not what worries me," she said softly.
"Then what is?"
Karan stared at her.
"That they'll start using you."
Silence.
Heavy.
Real.
Adara didn't look away.
"I'm not a tool."
"Not yet," he replied.
That hurt.
But not because of what he said.
Because of how he said it.
With certainty.
Before she could respond—
a knock on the door.
Loud.
Authoritative.
They both turned.
"Come in," Karan said.
The door opened.
Valerice.
But she wasn't alone.
Two guards were bringing someone in.
Dragged.
Beatted.
One of the attackers.
Still alive.
Barely.
Adara recognized him immediately.
Karan didn't need an explanation.
His gaze flickered from Adara… to the man… and then to Valerice.
"What is this?"
Valerice didn't answer right away.
She watched Adara.
"Your first mistake."
Silence.
Adara frowned.
"Mistake?"
Valerice took a step forward.
"Letting one escape… is strategy."
She pointed at the man.
"Letting this one live… is a choice."
Adara felt something tighten inside her.
"The goal wasn't to kill them."
"No," Valerice said. "It was to understand them."
The man on the ground let out a weak laugh. Blood trickled from his teeth.
"Too… late…"
Everyone looked at him.
Valerice gestured.
One of the guards forced him to raise his head.
"Speak," he ordered.
The man spat blood.
He smiled.
And looked directly at Adara.
Not at Karan.
Not at Valerice.
At her.
"She saw you…"
Total silence.
"Who?" Karan asked, his voice cold.
The man laughed again.
Weaker.
"The elf… of the lake…"
The air shifted.
Adara didn't move.
But something inside her…
reacted.
"They already know what you are…"
That shouldn't be possible.
Karan took a step forward.
"Who knows?"
The man coughed.
Blood.
"Everyone… soon…"
Valerice didn't hesitate.
"Stop."
A sharp movement.
The guard finished him off.
Silence.
Heavy.
Motionless.
No one spoke for several seconds.
Then—
Karan turned slowly toward Adara.
There was no anger now.
There was…calculation.
"What does that mean?"
Adara had no answer.
But she felt it.
That echo.
Distant.
Disturbing.
Valerice spoke before the silence was broken any further:
"It means you're no longer invisible."
A pause.
"And that changes the rules."
Adara squeezed her hand lightly.
"Then let them change."
Valerice looked at her.
Long.
Deep.
"They're going to change," she said. "But not in your favor."
Karan didn't take his eyes off Adara.
"What aren't you telling me?"
Adara looked at him.
And for the first time since arriving in Valoria…
she wasn't sure how much she should share.
The silence between them—
was no longer just tension.
It was the beginning of something more dangerous:
Secrets.
And outside…
somewhere in the city—
someone was already talking about her.
