Chapter 297 - Chapter 297: The Thing Beyond Reality

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Ayan stood before the mountain with his eyes fixed on the sealed Door. His breathing had finally become steady, but the feeling left behind by that colorless eye had not disappeared.

It was still inside him.

Not physically.

Something worse.

It had recognized him.

Seraphine remained beside him, watching his face carefully. She had seen Ayan face monsters, ancient gods, collapsing worlds, and even versions of himself without losing his composure. But this was different.

For the first time, Ayan looked genuinely unsettled.

"What did you see?" she asked again.

Ayan didn't answer immediately.

The forest around them remained unnaturally quiet. Even the strange glowing insects had disappeared. The silver trees stood motionless, their branches frozen beneath the pale light of the distant star.

Ayan finally looked at Seraphine.

"I saw where I came from."

Her eyes narrowed.

"And?"

"I wasn't born."

Mira and Maren exchanged glances.

Ayan continued.

"I arrived here from somewhere outside reality."

Doctor Rowan slowly adjusted his glasses.

"Outside reality?"

Ayan nodded.

"Something was there before the worlds existed."

Rowan's expression became thoughtful.

"That would contradict everything we know about creation."

"I know."

"And you believe it followed you?"

Ayan looked toward the sky.

"Yes."

Maren swallowed.

"Can it come here?"

Ayan remained silent.

That silence was enough.

Maren's expression fell.

"That's a yes."

Ayan looked toward the distant city.

"We need to return."

They started moving.

Nobody joked this time.

Nobody complained about the long journey.

The discovery had changed the atmosphere completely.

The eighth world had felt young and bright only a few hours earlier.

Now every shadow seemed deeper.

Every sound seemed suspicious.

Ayan constantly used the Bridge, scanning the surroundings.

Nothing.

No enemy.

No creature.

No disturbance.

That was what worried him most.

The Outside wasn't attacking.

It was waiting.

After several hours, the city appeared in the distance.

Smoke rose from the chimneys.

People were working.

Children were playing.

Veyra was lying near the outer wall, its enormous wings folded against its body.

Lumen sat beside the dragon.

The moment Ayan approached, Lumen stood.

"You came back."

Ayan nodded.

"I told you I would."

Lumen smiled.

Then his expression changed.

"You saw something."

Ayan stopped.

"How do you know?"

"I can feel it."

Ayan looked at Kai's former vessel.

"What do you feel?"

Lumen pointed toward the sky.

"Something is looking at us."

Ayan's expression became cold.

"Where?"

Lumen pointed upward.

Ayan activated the Bridge.

Nothing appeared.

He tried again.

Still nothing.

Then Lumen whispered:

"It isn't inside the world."

Ayan's blood ran cold.

"It is outside."

Lumen nodded.

Ayan looked at Kai.

The black-eyed child stood several meters away.

His expression was unusually serious.

"You knew."

Kai nodded.

"Yes."

"How long?"

"Since before you arrived."

Ayan stepped toward him.

"You knew the Outside existed."

"Yes."

"And you never told me."

"You had forgotten."

"I remembered now."

Kai looked toward him.

"That's why I'm worried."

Ayan frowned.

"Why?"

"Because remembering the Outside isn't enough."

Kai pointed toward Ayan's chest.

"You have to remember why you escaped it."

Ayan's expression hardened.

"I was told I wanted to experience humanity."

"That's only part of the truth."

Ayan stared.

"What else?"

Kai shook his head.

"I can't tell you."

"Why?"

"Because I don't remember."

Ayan's eyes narrowed.

"You?"

Kai nodded.

"The Outside took something from me."

"What?"

"My memory."

Ayan was silent.

Kai continued.

"It doesn't erase memories like you do."

"It removes the part of you that knows the memory belonged to you."

Ayan's expression changed.

"So even if you recover it..."

"You might not recognize it."

Ayan looked toward the mountain.

That explained the strange feeling.

Some of his memories had felt like dreams.

Others had felt like someone else's life.

Maybe they weren't incomplete.

Maybe he simply didn't know which memories belonged to him.

Doctor Rowan suddenly spoke.

"Then we need to establish something."

Ayan looked at him.

"What?"

"If the Outside existed before reality, then it shouldn't be possible for it to enter reality."

Ayan nodded.

"Correct."

"Then how did it find you?"

Ayan thought about the colorless eye.

"It didn't."

Everyone became silent.

Ayan slowly understood.

"It followed my connection."

Rowan frowned.

"What connection?"

"The Bridge."

Seraphine's expression changed.

"The Bridge connects worlds."

Ayan nodded.

"But it doesn't only connect worlds."

He looked toward the sky.

"It connects possibilities."

"And if the Outside exists beyond all possibilities..."

Ayan's face became grim.

"...then the Bridge may have accidentally given it a path."

Rowan stared.

"Then the Bridge itself is the problem."

Ayan nodded.

"Maybe."

Mira asked, "Can you close it?"

Ayan looked at his hand.

"I don't know."

He activated it.

Silver lines appeared.

Seven worlds.

The eighth.

The Archive.

The First World.

Then something else.

A tiny black mark.

Ayan's eyes widened.

There was a connection he had never seen before.

It stretched beyond everything.

Not toward a world.

Not toward a person.

Toward emptiness.

Ayan tried to sever it.

Nothing happened.

He tried again.

The line remained.

Kai stepped backward.

"Don't."

Ayan looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because if you cut it..."

Kai's expression became grim.

"...it will know exactly where you are."

Ayan immediately stopped.

The line disappeared.

Ayan lowered his hand.

"So we're being watched."

Kai nodded.

"Yes."

"Can it see everything?"

"No."

"Then what can it see?"

"Only you."

Ayan's expression changed.

"Why me?"

Kai looked at him.

"Because you were its prisoner."

The words hit harder than Ayan expected.

"Prisoner?"

Kai nodded.

"Before you arrived here."

Ayan's memories suddenly became painful.

White darkness.

No direction.

No time.

A voice.

Something watching.

Something calling his name.

He had always believed those were fragments of his imagination.

They weren't.

He had escaped.

Not voluntarily.

He had run.

He had built the Door.

He had created reality as a hiding place.

He had erased himself.

He had become human.

Ayan looked toward the sky.

"So I wasn't exploring reality."

"No."

"I was hiding."

"Yes."

"And the worlds..."

"Were your hiding places."

Ayan closed his eyes.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The First World.

The Seven Worlds.

The eighth world.

All of them had been attempts to create somewhere the Outside couldn't reach.

But now it had found him.

Which meant the hiding place had failed.

Ayan opened his eyes.

"Then we have to move."

Seraphine frowned.

"Move where?"

"Somewhere it can't reach."

Kai shook his head.

"There is nowhere."

Ayan looked at him.

"Then we make somewhere."

Kai smiled.

"That's the Ayan I remember."

Ayan turned toward the city.

"We need to prepare."

The next few days changed everything.

The people didn't know the full truth.

Ayan didn't tell them.

Instead, he told them that something dangerous might come from beyond the world.

They began strengthening the walls.

Veyra patrolled the skies.

Mira organized scouts.

Maren trained the soldiers who had remained after the first war.

Doctor Rowan began studying the Door.

Seraphine worked with Ayan to understand the Bridge.

And Lumen...

Lumen began teaching the children.

Not fighting.

Not magic.

Choice.

He taught them that fear was something they could feel without obeying.

Ayan watched him one afternoon.

Lumen sat beneath a silver tree with several children gathered around him.

"What should you do when you're afraid?"

One child raised his hand.

"Run?"

Lumen shook his head.

"Maybe."

Another child answered.

"Fight?"

"Maybe."

A third child asked.

"Hide?"

"Maybe."

The children looked confused.

Lumen smiled.

"The answer is whatever you choose."

Ayan smiled.

Kai stood beside him.

"He learned quickly."

Ayan nodded.

"Yes."

"You taught him."

"No."

Ayan looked at Lumen.

"He taught himself."

Kai smiled.

"Exactly."

That evening, Ayan returned to the mountain.

He stood before the Door alone.

Seraphine joined him.

"You come here every night."

"I know."

"Why?"

Ayan looked at the symbols.

"I'm trying to remember."

"Your past?"

"Everything."

She remained silent.

Ayan continued.

"I think there's something I forgot."

"Something important?"

"Extremely."

Seraphine stepped closer.

"Then don't force it."

Ayan looked at her.

"What?"

"If you try to remember everything at once, you might lose yourself."

Ayan smiled.

"You're right."

She looked surprised.

"That was easy."

"I've learned."

They stood together.

Then the Door moved.

Seraphine immediately drew her weapon.

Ayan raised his hand.

"Wait."

The Door opened by itself.

Cold white light emerged.

Ayan's heart began beating faster.

Inside was the same white room.

But the child was gone.

His mother was gone.

Only a single object remained.

A chair.

Ayan stared.

Then he noticed someone sitting in it.

A man.

His back was turned.

Ayan's body became completely still.

The man spoke.

"You came back."

Ayan's expression hardened.

"Who are you?"

The man slowly turned.

He had Ayan's face.

But he was older.

Much older.

His hair was white.

His eyes were silver.

And his body was covered in scars.

Ayan stared at him.

The man smiled.

"You finally remembered enough."

Ayan raised his weapon.

"Are you another version of me?"

The man laughed.

"No."

"Then who?"

The man stood.

"I am the first person you created."

Ayan froze.

"What?"

The man walked closer.

"You created me before the worlds."

Ayan's expression became confused.

"Why?"

"To keep you company."

Ayan stared.

The man smiled.

"But I became jealous."

"Of what?"

"You."

Ayan didn't understand.

The man continued.

"You created me to understand loneliness."

"But I was the one who became lonely."

Ayan's grip tightened.

"What happened?"

"I watched you create worlds."

"I watched you create people."

"I watched you create gods."

"And eventually..."

The man's smile disappeared.

"...I realized you would never create me a place beside you."

Ayan's expression changed.

"So you turned against me."

"No."

The man shook his head.

"I asked you to stay."

"And?"

"You left."

Ayan froze.

The man pointed toward the white room.

"You left me here."

Ayan looked around.

The room suddenly felt familiar.

Too familiar.

He remembered.

A table.

A chair.

A small room.

Someone waiting.

A voice calling him.

He had forgotten.

The man had waited.

For years.

For centuries.

For longer than time itself.

Ayan whispered:

"I'm sorry."

The man stared at him.

Then smiled.

"I know."

Ayan looked at him.

"Then why are you here?"

The man's expression became serious.

"Because I found the Outside."

Ayan's heart stopped.

"You know what it is?"

"Yes."

"Then tell me."

The man stepped closer.

"It isn't an enemy."

Ayan frowned.

"What?"

"It's a prison."

Silence.

Ayan stared.

The man continued.

"The Outside isn't chasing you."

"It is trying to contain you."

Ayan's face went pale.

"Why?"

The man looked directly into his eyes.

"Because you are the thing that existed before it."

Ayan's breathing stopped.

The man smiled.

"You think you escaped the Outside."

"But the truth is..."

He leaned closer.

"...the Outside escaped you."

The Door slammed shut.

Ayan stood frozen.

Seraphine looked at him.

"What did he say?"

Ayan stared at the stone.

"I don't know."

But somewhere deep inside...

he did.

He just couldn't remember.

Far beyond the eighth world, the colorless eye opened again.

This time, it wasn't looking at Ayan.

It was looking inward.

Toward something buried inside him.

A voice whispered through the emptiness.

**Wake up.**

Ayan suddenly clutched his chest.

His knees buckled.

Seraphine caught him.

"Ayan!"

His eyes turned completely silver.

And for one terrifying second...

another voice came from his mouth.

A voice older than the worlds.

Older than the Origin.

Older than the first choice.

**I am awake.**

Then Ayan collapsed.

And somewhere inside him...

something smiled.
