The last strain snapped. Seeing his friend dragged into the darkness was the final, horrifying blow. The lead bandit's mind broke, shattering into a thousand pieces of pure, primal terror.
"NO! NO! GODS, NO!" he screamed, his voice a high-pitched, inhuman shriek of pure panic.
He dropped his sword, the metallic clatter forgotten in an instant. "FUCK! FUCK! LET ME OUT! IT'S NOT WORTH IT!"
He ran. Didn't even look where he was going, he just ran, blind and deaf to everything but the roaring in his own ears.
"I DON'T WANNA DIE! I DON'T WANNA DIE IN HERE!"
He scrambled through the stone maze, stumbling and falling, scrambling back to his feet without missing a beat. His lungs burned, his heart felt like it was going to explode. And then he saw it. A sliver of hope. Up ahead, the darkness gave way to a pale, silvery light. He could see the sky, the trees, the grass swaying in the moonlight.
'Almost there!' The thought blazed through his mind, a desperate, frantic mantra. "Almost there! Almost home! Please, gods, please!"
He put on a final burst of speed, stumbling out of the cave and onto the soft earth of the forest floor. He was free.
For a single, glorious second.
He was so close. The freedom was right there, a tantalizing promise of life and open air. His fingers were just inches from the opening when it happened. With a deep, resonant BOOM, the stone door slammed downwards.
It struck him squarely in the face, breaking his nose and sending a spray of blood as he was thrown backward onto the hard floor. He lay there, dazed and disoriented, the world swimming in a haze of pain and shock.
"No… no, it can't be…" he mumbled, struggling to sit up. His hand went to his face, and his fingers came away slick with his own blood.
He crawled to the now-solid wall of stone, his broken fingers scrabbling against its smooth, implacable surface. "My way out! WHY?!" he screamed, his voice raw and desperate.
He frantically searched for a lever, a trigger, anything, his mind refusing to accept the truth.
But then, a new sound rose behind him. A chorus of sharp, metallic clicks, closer this time. Much closer.
He slowly turned, his body trembling uncontrollably. And then he saw it. The final, soul-destroying sight.
Five figures emerged from the shadows. They were the size of children, with skin the color of bone, and six glowing red eyes clustered on their faces. Their bodies were wrapped in white silk, but from behind, their forms split into a horrifying, chitinous array of long, spindly spider legs that twitched and scraped against the stone.
They were a fusion of human and arachnid, a beautiful nightmare given flesh.
"No! Don't come closer!" the bandit screamed, flailing his arms uselessly. He scrambled backward until his back was pressed flat against the cold stone, the last door between him and a freedom that was now a cruel lie.
They kept coming, advancing with a slow and terrifying stride. Their many red eyes glittered with an unblinking, predatory light.
"no"
"No!"
"NOOOOOO!"
His final scream echoed through the cavern, a raw sound of absolute despair and horror.
Then, there was only silence.

From other chamber, three more bandits stumbled out of a narrow tunnel, their boots splashing in the shallow, viscous fluid that coated the floor. They stopped dead, their eyes wide with a horror that defied comprehension.
The room they had entered wasn't a room. It was a body, a stomach. Every surface was composed of slick, glistening red flesh. The walls pulsed with deep, rhythmic contractions, like a massive heart beating around them.
Thick, heavy folds of tissue slid against one another with wet, squelching sounds, coated in a clear, syrupy sheen that reeked of stomach acid and a cloying, nauseating sweetness.
And it was alive.
They could see the blood vessels - thick, ropy veins and arteries wiggling under the transparent surface, carrying dark blood throughout the pulsing chamber. The entire cavern breathed. A wet, groaning sound emanated from the flesh itself, a sound of immense digestion.
A low-hanging sac of flesh, large and turgid, hung from the ceiling above them. With a soft, wet plop, it disgorged a thick, milky liquid that dripped down, splashing onto the floor and sending up a wave of the same sickly-sweet, acrid stench.
One of the bandits gagged, stumbling back toward the tunnel, his hand covering his mouth. But the flesh of the tunnel entrance had already sealed itself shut, becoming just another pulsing wall of the stomach.
They were trapped inside.
Then, from the opposite side of the living chamber, a dark, jagged wound of a tunnel tore open. Hope, fierce and desperate, surged through the trapped bandits.
'A way out!' They all thought it at the same time, their muscles tensing for a desperate sprint.
But that hope curdled into a new kind of fear. From the opening, many small figures stepped out, their hands clutching an assortment of jagged, rusted weapons.
"G-goblins?" one of the bandits stammered, his voice cracking.
They were not small like any goblins he had ever seen, higher than a man's waist. But it wasn't their size that was terrifying. It was their eyes, savage and barbaric.
"We can fight them," a bandit snarled, forcing himself to his feet despite the tremor in his legs. He pulled his sword from its sheath, the rasping sound of steel on leather echoing in the fleshy chamber. "There are only seven of them, and they're just dumb goblins. We can take them."
His two companions looked at each other, then back at the figures emerging from the tunnel. He was right. They were small. And as they stepped fully into the ghastly, red light, the bandits saw that they were all female. Their bodies were wiry and underdeveloped, wrapped in light armors.
"That's right," the third bandit said, drawing his own dagger and trying to sound braver than he felt. "Let's gut these little freaks and get out of here."
The lead goblin stopped, tilting her head. Her eyes weren't the dull, stupid eyes of a typical goblin but sharp and intelligent, glinting with a malice that was far older than her child-like appearance. She held a small, crudely-made whip in one hand and raised it.
The six other goblins spread out behind then flanking her, their movements unnervingly disciplined and precise. Two held short bows, arrows nocked and aimed. Two more wielded hand-axes, and the final pair held long, wicked-looking daggers, their blades stained dark.
There was no fear on their faces. Only a cold, unnerving calm. The air in the chamber grew thick with a palpable, silent tension. The pulsing of the walls seemed dull, as if the entire living cavern was holding its breath, waiting to see which side would bleed first.
The standoff shattered.
With a guttural roar, a bandit charged forward, his sword held high. His target was the lead goblin, the one with the whip. He was confident. She was small, and he was a grown man with a proper sword.
He swung in a horizontal arc, aiming to cleave her in two. The goblin was impossibly fast. She ducked under the swing, the wind of the blade rustling her stringy hair.
Before the bandit could recover, she flicked her whip. It snaked out and wrapped around his ankle, the tip a sharp, thorn-covered barb. She yanked, hard. His feet went out from under him, and he slammed onto the slick, fleshy floor with a wet, slapping sound. He cried out as his elbow smashed into the ground.
The other two bandits were already engaging. One lunged at the goblin with an axe, but she turned the strike aside with the edge of her weapon, the sound of metal on metal ringing out. She was smaller, faster, and her counters were swift and precise, opening small cuts on his arms and torso.
The third bandit fired his bow at a goblin archer, his arrow flying straight. The goblin simply sidestepped, as if she had known where it would be. She nocked her own arrow in reply.
For a moment, the bandits held their own. They were bigger, stronger, and their desperation gave them a savage edge. They landed a few solid blows.
One bandit managed to kick a goblin in the chest, sending her sprawling back into a pulsing wall of flesh. Another sliced a shallow wound across a goblin's thigh.
