Chapter 13 - The Day of the Great Devourer

"They must do everything they can to stop the Great Devourer! Go, Ninjas!" - Wu ordered them.

Nya, in her suit, flew. The Great Devourer rose from the underground where it had been imprisoned. Storm clouds formed in the sky.

The serpent emerged roaring, savoring its freedom. The ninjas watched in shock.

The Great Devourer then turned to Wu and Pythor, launching its jaws at them, devouring them.

"Sensei..." - Kai couldn't believe what he saw.

"Oh no..." -

All the ninjas trained by Wu were shocked and saddened by the loss. Moon watched in silence.

"Wu... Sensei Aaron and I will go back to the Jungle Realm..." - Little Moon said, looking at a lake in front of her.

"Then it must be good, you always wanted to go there" - Young Wu sat next to her - "But, why do you look sad?" -

"Sensei Aaron said that when we get there... We won't be able to come back here" - She looked at her own hands - "I don't want to be without seeing you or the evil Garmadon" -

Wu placed a hand on her shoulder.

"And you won't, I'm sure we'll see each other in the future! After all, you don't give up easily" - Wu tried to comfort her.

"Yes... You're right. But, promise me you won't forget me or leave me?" - Moon asked, looking at him.

"I promise" -

Wu ruffled her hair, which made her laugh. Suddenly Aaron called her, and Moon immediately went to him.

"I'm here, Sensei!" - She approached, smiling.

"We have to go now, Moon, we won't get another chance" - Aaron seemed nervous.

"Uh?" - Moon blinked, confused.

"I'll explain when we get there" - Aaron assured her with a reassuring smile.

Moon gave one last look at Wu before going after Aaron.

Moon felt something run down the left side of her face; she quickly wiped it and realized it was a tear.

"Maybe if we stay totally still..." - The Great Devourer stared at them.

"Run!" - Kai shouted quickly.

All the ninjas turned to flee from the giant serpent with murderous intent. Moon looked back and saw its aura; completely dark, a deep blue, pure evil.

That serpent was never a neutral being or one with an unhappy life who turned evil. It was born of darkness and grew in darkness. Its only destiny: to devour everything and everyone until nothing remained.

Jay stumbled, and Moon stopped to help him.

"Thank you so much!" - He thanked her as they ran to the ship.

Lloyd watched everything, worried.

Nya adjusted the ship to fly away as fast as possible once the ninjas boarded. The ninjas rushed in.

"I hate to say this, but that monster on the radar is closer than it seems" - Jay exclaimed, out of breath.

"I'll handle it!" - Nya said, maneuvering the ship's helm - "Boosters at maximum!" -

They managed to dodge the jaws at the last moment.

"Uhu! Take that, you stupid monster!" - Kai exclaimed cheerfully.

"Don't celebrate too soon" - Moon said sternly - "That serpent won't stop until it devours everything and everyone." -

"Ah... I think it heard you, and Moon is completely right" - Jay swallowed hard.

The Great Devourer began attacking the ship and chasing quickly.

"Nya, go faster! That thing is catching up!" - Kai shouted nervously.

"I'm going as fast as possible! I'll try to head for the Split Canyon!" - Nya explained.

"The probability of reaching that far is 80%" - Zane said.

"Don't talk about probability!" - That only made Nya even more nervous.

"It's coming for another attack on the port side!" - Cole shouted, looking at the radar.

"Where's Moon?" - Lloyd noticed the ninja was missing.

"No! It's going to hit us!" -

However, before the Great Devourer could snap at the ship, a large transparent light-blue sphere of energy hit it right in the face. The serpent was stunned by it.

"Was that Moon?!" - Jay was surprised - "Why didn't she do that earlier?!" -

The ninja was on top of the ship, barely breathing. That was a lot of energy. Maybe she could only manage one more attack.

The serpent shook its head and resumed the chase. The ship began losing altitude, and one of the engines was destroyed.

She saw them throwing things to lighten the weight.

"No!" - Moon jumped from where she was and landed on her feet - "Don't throw anything else! It will grow with that!" -.

"He really looks bigger" - Cole swallowed hard as he saw it had grown in size.

"We're approaching the Canyon, hold on tight!" - Nya's voice came through the loudspeakers.

"Where were you, and what was that thing earlier?" - Kai asked as he approached her.

"That was an Aura Explosion on a larger scale" - Moon explained, a little tired.

"Seriously?! And why didn't you do it before?!" - Kai frowned.

"Try launching a big energy ball without getting tired" - Moon rolled her eyes - "I can only launch one more of those, then I'll reach exhaustion." -

Everything seemed calm; it looked like they had lost it.

"We lost it!" - Cole smiled, relieved.

However, the Devourer appeared and attacked them, destroying the ship completely.

Everyone fled from the falling ship to their respective vehicles. Lloyd hitched a ride with Nya.

The Ninjas and Samurai watched the end of their home with sadness. Moon felt a pang in her heart she could hardly ignore.

Everyone started their engines and went into hiding. The Great Devourer finished destroying the ship completely before leaving.

"It's gone" - Jay didn't even want to look back.

"That was intense" - Kai removed his mask, his hair stuck to his forehead from sweat - "All this action makes you thirsty." -

"No rest! We have to warn people before it grows even bigger" - Zane stood up.

Jay got up next and removed his mask.

"Bigger?! That thing destroyed our Ship with one bite!" - Jay was genuinely irritated - "We have to save as much as we can. We need to find some refuge, some safe place, I don't know!" - Jay was starting to panic - "Uh! The Snake Tombs! That's it! We're underground, of course, we'd have little sun, but it would be perfect!" -

Moon stood up, ignoring the weakness in her legs.

"Seriously, are you going to give up?" - Moon removed her mask with a serious expression.

"I'm sure everyone here knows we don't stand a chance against that thing!" - Jay frowned.

"And everyone knows it won't stop until it devours everything! Nowhere is safe! It's only a matter of time!" - Moon exclaimed - "I thought you Ninjas wouldn't accept defeat or give up... I guess I was wrong" - Moon turned her gaze.

"Ah?! And what do you want us to do?!" - Jay was ready to start an argument with her.

"Hey! Stop that! Listen to what I'm saying! Do you think Sensei would like this? Fighting among ourselves, running and hiding, and giving up?" - Kai asked, trying to stop the argument.

"But he's not here anymore" - Lloyd's voice was filled with sadness.

Everyone fell silent out of respect. Kai seemed to have taken the lead.

"But his teachings remain" - Kai turned to face them - "The Sensei said it doesn't matter the size of the Ninja in a fight, but the size of the fight in a Ninja! All the training, the battles we had against skeletons, enemy ninjas" - A subtle hint Moon accepted - "And snakes... We persevered through everything! We can't give up now! A Ninja never admits defeat, a Ninja always gets up when they fall. Because that's exactly what Sensei Wu would want from us" - Kai's great speech.

"But how do we destroy a monster of that magnitude?" - Zane asked.

"Yeah! We don't have the Sacred Flute anymore. But wait! How about our amazing dragons? Oh, I forgot! They ran off and left us! And our Golden Weapons won't do anything against a snake that size! We have no way out..." - Jay said, lying on the ground in a fetal position, defeated.

"Jay is right. We'd need a much bigger weapon!" - Cole exclaimed.

"Or an even bigger idea! Ah Jay, you're a genius! You thinking what I'm thinking?" - Kai suddenly got excited.

"Probably not. Speak." - Jay gave an indifferent look.

"We don't have time! I'll explain on the way. Move!" - Kai went ahead.

"Did the desert heat melt his brain?" - Moon tilted her head to the side.

"Where are we going?" -

"We're going to destroy the Great Devourer once and for all!" - He really looked confident in his idea.

o0o0o

They arrived at Jay's parents' scrapyard.

"Good idea, Kai. If the Devourer likes to eat, this place is a full buffet!" - Cole mocked.

"My parents are out" - Jay said once they arrived.

"Even better" - Kai then pulled out a construction plant.

(Where did he get that? Or rather, when did he make that?) - Moon wondered internally.

"Awesome!" - Jay got excited about the project.

"Zane, do you still have the Sacred Flute audio with you?" - Kai asked the Nindroid.

"I could have destroyed it earlier, but I have the tone recorded and ready to play" - He said, playing the flute sound.

"Great. Moon, you can make another one of those Aura Explosions, right?" - Kai turned to the ninja.

"Yes, but after that I'll reach my limit." -

"Right. There should be enough parts here to build it. We have to make the biggest Tornado of Creation ever seen! This will be dangerous; no one can be nearby" - Kai explained while Lloyd tried to see what it was.

They heard the sound of bells. It was the mailman.

"What's he doing here?" - Cole sighed.

Everyone went to see what he wanted, probably just doing his job.

"Ah! You Ninjas are always sneaking around! Scaring people. Too quiet." - The Mailman lightly scolded.

"Sir, you need to leave immediately" - Moon spoke in a serious tone.

"Well, although you are very polite, young lady, I have a job to do, which is delivering mail. And I intend to do it" - He said, holding the package.

"Man, my parents aren't even here. You should leave now" - Jay exclaimed.

"Them too?" - The Mailman seemed surprised - "Let me guess, they're at the Ninja Reflection Valley too, right?" -.

"Ah, Vale Ninja of Reflection?" - Jay seemed very confused.

"Not knowing? Everyone is gathering to protest against all the problems with the serpents that have been happening to you" - He explained.

"Wow! Look at that! You guys are the inspiration" - Lloyd praised.

"Wait a minute. You know what? You're right. Everywhere you appear, chaos is involved" - The Devourer approached, letting the ninjas prepare - "I think I'll leave now, because whatever you're up to, I don't want to get involved" - He turned and came face-to-face with the giant serpent - "AHHH! NO!" - He screamed as he hid.

The serpent stared at them and then at the junkyard, admiring its new snack.

"Hey! It's now or never! Ninja, Go!" - Kai led them - "Fire!" -

"Earth!" -

"Lightning!" -

"Ice!" -

"Aura!" -

A gigantic tornado, only smaller than the serpent itself, formed, with colors: Red, White, Blue, Light Blue, and Brown. Pulling many items toward it.

When it vanished, an incredible vehicle appeared.

"Go, Zane! Now!" - Kai ordered.

Zane pressed a button that sent a sound wave from the Sacred Flute, but the serpent dodged.

"Zane, this isn't a target practice! You have to hit the Devourer! Not cut his hair" - Cole frowned.

"We just combined this pile of junk with magic" - Zane exclaimed.

"I hope it has reverse gear" - Kai swallowed nervously.

"Why?" -

"Reverse!" - The Devourer went for the boat.

"How about this?" - Jay reversed, but they crashed into a pile of junk.

They dodged a few boats before managing to grab the serpent's scales with a hook and pull it down.

"Go, Zane! Now!" - This time they hit her right in the face.

"Haha! It's working!" - Cole smiled.

Moon used her Aura Eyes to analyze the serpent better, spotting a point where the aura seemed strongest.

"There's a large concentration of aura on her forehead" - Moon exclaimed, blinking and returning her eyes to normal - "It must be her weakness!" -

"What?" - Cole turned when she said that.

"On her head! There's a..." - But the serpent destroyed the car with the sharp tip of her tail.

"Zane!" -

Moon widened her eyes when she saw the part where Zane was got destroyed, very close to her.

"White Ninja..." - Moon murmured, feeling concerned.

"Is everyone okay?!" -

"I'm here!" - Zane's voice came from the destroyed part - "That was close" - Part of his artificial skin came off, revealing the mechanical part of his face.

"Too close" - Kai sighed in relief.

"Perfect. It was a total failure!" - Jay rolled his eyes as he climbed out of the vehicle debris.

"Not totally! Moon managed to discover something" - Kai turned to her.

"On his forehead, right in the middle, there was a kind of glowing spot, it must be the weak point" - Moon explained, sliding out of the seat she was in.

"Oh great! I'll note this! The Great Devourer has a tiny weak point! Which is absolutely impossible to hit! Because this thing is ridiculously huge for us to detect it!" - Jay was losing his mind.

"Are you done?" - Nya asked.

Jay took a deep breath to calm his nerves.

"Uh, yeah" - He sighed.

"Because it's getting worse" - Nya crossed her arms - "Look!" - She pointed to where the Devourer was heading.

"It's going to Ninjago City!" - Zane exclaimed.

"That's where my parents are!" -

"And where everyone is!" -

"If it devours a city like Ninjago... We won't have a way to stop this thing" -

o0o0o

In Ninjago City, people are protesting against the Serpents for all the problems they've caused. Until the Great Devourer arrived, causing chaos and eating some objects to grow even bigger.

The Ninjas arrived shortly after to try to stop it.

"Lightning!" - Jay shot lightning at the Devourer to protect his parents.

"Fire!" - Kai unleashed a wave of flames with his Golden Sword.

"Can I borrow this?" - Cole threw the reporter's van at the snake.

The snake threatened them with the sharp tip of its tail.

"Ice!" - Zane exclaimed, freezing the tip to prevent the attack.

The serpent finished destroying the van.

"Ah, I think this thing is angry now" - Jay muttered.

It was indeed a difficult battle.

"Aura!" - Moon hit her staff on the ground and created a barrier to block its bite.

The Ninjas were starting to lose. Nya appeared in her Samurai outfit and uprooted a pole to fight. She placed the pole in the serpent's mouth, preventing it from closing.

"Samurai to the rescue! Again!" - Jay spun his nunchucks.

"It has worse breath than Cole's chili!" - Lloyd exclaimed with a grimace of disgust.

"Hey!" - Cole felt offended.

The Serpent struggled, trying to close its mouth.

"Get out of there, Nya!" - Kai was extremely worried.

"I can't, I'm stuck!" -

Kai, Jay, and Moon ran to help her. Then, from the sky, two dragons descended; one predominantly white with four heads and another predominantly black with one head. The four-headed dragon struck the snake with its body, while the one-headed dragon bit it before retreating.

"Rocky! The dragons are back!" - Cole exclaimed happily.

"Sprint..." - Moon was speechless at how much he had grown and changed.

"Dragons undergo a metamorphosis when they become adults. They also find their True Potential" - Zane explained what he understood.

"They couldn't have appeared at a better time!" -

The ice head froze the snake's neck.

"Ice!" -

Then the dragon flew away and released a fire blast.

"Fire!" -

Approaching with a charge, it struck with lightning.

"Lightning!" -

Then the four-headed dragon slammed its body fully against the snake.

"Earth!" -

The four-headed dragon moved away, leaving the other one to shine this time, literally. Sprint's spikes and throat began to glow as he charged an Aura Explosion of a size Moon could never create.

"Aura!" - Moon looked impressed at her dragon, seeing how strong he had become.

The serpent stumbled, dazed, into a building. Nya managed to get out of its mouth, and Sprint caught her in his claws before putting her safely on the ground.

The serpent and the dragons began a violent fight. The Devourer retreated, and the four-headed dragon approached to land. Sprint roared at him, as if to say no. Then the Devourer attacked from beneath the ground and managed to win.

Now it was just Sprint against the Great Devourer, but even Sprint couldn't win. At one point, the Devourer bit Sprint's tail, making the dragon roar in pure pain before being thrown to the other side.

Moon ran to her beloved dragon.

"Sprint!" - She placed her hands on his snout - "Oh my boy" -.

The dragon growled in recognition of his friend. He gave her a small lick.

"It's okay, Sprint, this will be over soon... I promise" - She gave a kiss on his snout, which was met with a purr.

The Great Devourer continued landing. Moon turned and saw Garmadon; she froze. Sprint nudged her with his snout, as if he knew what needed to be done. He growled and huffed when he sensed Lord Garmadon.

"I have to go, boy" -.

She went to him and bowed, ignoring the chaos.

"I need the Golden Weapons, only I can handle the power of all five at once. It's the only way to defeat the Devourer" - Garmadon explained.

"Ah... I thought we should do everything to prevent him from getting the five weapons" - Jay exclaimed.

"I ran all the alternatives on my server. Seems like it's the only choice" - Zane also didn't like it, but it was the only solution.

"Give me the weapons" - Garmadon demanded.

"Kai?" -.

"Only I can destroy it, or prepare yourself for—" - Kai interrupted Garmadon.

"Stop complaining and just move" - He handed his sword to Garmadon - "You'll only get this chance to blow this thing up if you hit the weak spot on its forehead, Moon discovered that" - Kai gave her the credit.

Garmadon was a little surprised by that.

"I don't even need to say it: let's want it back" - Jay exclaimed as he handed over his nunchaku.

Moon hesitated to hand her staff to Garmadon. Garmadon had to sling it on his back for now, since he had four arms, not five.

"I'll do my part, make sure it stays in one place" - Garmadon said laughing and ran off.

"In one place?! How are we supposed to do that?!" - Jay exclaimed.

"I have an idea. Let's take the Devourer to a really narrow part of the city, Kai, you'll be the bait" - Moon started forming the plan.

"Why me?!" - The Red Ninja widened his eyes.

"The Devourer seems to hate you more; it will follow you" - Kai just grumbled a bit.

"Cole will then take it to a dead-end alley, well, for the Devourer, that is" - The Black Ninja nodded - "It's very likely the Devourer will rise, that's where you come in Jay, you'll lead it to that building under construction, where Zane will be waiting for you. There, Zane, you'll prepare to create an ice path until the Devourer goes around the block, where, by my calculations, it will get stuck because it's too big" - Moon continued explaining - "Then, the Elemental Dragon will take you away while Sprint and I knock out the Devourer."

o0o0o

Then the plan was put into action. Sprint and Moon used the aura to make sure it stayed in place and knocked out.

"It's going to break free!" - Moon noticed the Devourer was forcing its way out.

She focused a large Aura Sphere, the largest she had ever made, even bigger than Sprint's. And she hit it with everything, keeping the serpent on the ground powerless. Sprint grabbed his Ninja and flew to safety.

Now it was Garmadon's turn to do his part, destroying the serpent.

Garmadon used all five Golden Weapons and hit the weak spot, making the Great Devourer explode into nasty green slime.

Everyone could celebrate the victory and the rescue.

"Our little Ninja!" - Jay's family hugged him, proud.

Cole turned to hug the head representing Rocky. Moon arrived riding Sprint and then got down.

"Thank you, my friend" -

"I can't see my dad" - Lloyd said, trying to look for him.

"He's around here somewhere" - Kai tried to comfort him.

"Your analysis is incorrect. He is not here" - Zane said.

"Our Golden Weapons are also gone! How convenient" - Cole rolled his eyes.

Nya spotted some footprints on the dragon and called everyone to see whose they were.

"I have a feeling you'll see your father very soon" - Kai exclaimed.

"I know, and that's what scares me" -

Suddenly Cole gasped.

"Sensei Wu!" - He smiled when he saw the old man alive and well.

Everyone went there, happy and in shock. Moon couldn't hold her smile this time.

"Wu..." - She exclaimed with relief in her voice.

"He survived!" -

Now everyone could truly celebrate.

"I can't even say how happy I am to see you all again. The Great Devourer left a bad taste in my mouth" - He grabbed his kettle, which surprisingly had tea, and it was hot - "Much better. And still hot" - Wu laughed.

"It's good to have you back, uncle. But my father left with the Golden Weapons" - Lloyd exclaimed.

"Ah, that's true. Skill with weapons is a wonderful thing, but the ability to evolve is undeniable" - Wu said.

"I couldn't have said it better myself" - Jay exclaimed.

"And we have what matters most: you" - Kai placed his hand on Wu's shoulder.

"The apprentices have become the masters" - Wu couldn't help but feel proud.

"So, uncle... will I really have to fight my father one day?" - Lloyd asked nervously.

"One day. But today we can be happy, because Ninjago is safe. Starting tomorrow you will train for that day. Good will finally face evil, and the final outcome will be decided forever" - Wu explained.

"Don't worry, we'll teach you everything" - Kai assured him.

"And make sure you're ready for that fight" - Jay got excited.

"Because as we know, good will always fight evil" - Cole exclaimed.

"And the ninjas will always defend what is right" - Zane added.

"Go. Ninja, Go!" - Jay, Cole, Lloyd, Zane, and Kai jumped with their fists raised, celebrating a bright future.

Moon watched everything in silence. She sighed as she looked down and turned.

o0o0o

"We have to go, Sprint... I know, I know" - Sprint growled, not wanting to leave - "But... I feel I've already fulfilled everything I owed Garmadon... Lloyd will be safe with them and will learn to be the Green Ninja..." - She stroked Sprint's neck - "... There are still things I want to discover, but my presence is no longer necessary..." - She sighed.

She was without the mask.

"Where do you think you're going, Moon?" - Wu's voice interrupted her.

Sprint was surprised and excited. Moon turned around.

"I have to go, I'm no longer necessary. I repaid my debt to Garmadon, I feel that... Lloyd will be safe with the other ninjas and will learn to defend herself to be the Green Ninja" - Moon explained.

"What do you mean by that, dude? I mean... girl?" - Jay was thoughtful on how to refer to Moon with that expression.

"You're part of the team, Moon" - Cole exclaimed - "If you leave, the team will be incomplete."

"I was your enemy from the start; we only joined forces because I had a mission and because our interests aligned until now" - Moon explained.

"That's incorrect. Yes, you were our enemy, but that was in the past... You became a fundamental part of the team and our friend" - Zane said after analyzing the data in his memory.

"Besides, weren't we both Girls Power? It gets boring with just a bunch of boys who aren't responsible at all" - Nya exclaimed and was met with a "hey" from the boys.

"You... You're also a powerful ninja and know Lloyd better, you'll be able to train him more than us... Besides, I don't care about the differences we had in the past and that" - Memories of Moon kidnapping her sister briefly flashed in her mind - "You are part of the team, of the family, Moon. You can't just leave without more, it would be too cruel" - Kai said and then sighed - "It hurts my pride to say this... Please stay, I'll miss you."

"Yeah, we'll miss you" - Cole agreed quickly while glancing briefly at Kai.

Nya seemed to have noticed something and raised an eyebrow. Lloyd approached.

"You are my friend Moon, from the start... I don't know what I would do without you" - He hugged her - "So... please... stay."

This surprised her. Emotions she thought would never return... came back. She placed her hands on Lloyd's back. Sprint pushed them toward the group with his head, purring.

Nya and the Ninjas approached and gave a group hug. Moon was silent at first, processing... Then... Then she smiled, a big, genuine smile.

A single tear fell from her right eye, after so many years starting with the left. Her heart could finally release the pain and loneliness she felt.

Wu nodded with a happy smile, proud of her growth.

...Maybe, just maybe, everything can end happy and well.
