Chapter 14: The Choice
The pen trembled in Tanoy's hand.
Just one signature.
That's all it would take.
His name.
On that line.
And everything would change.
His heart pounded violently against his chest.
"This is for my family…" he whispered again.
But the words didn't feel as strong this time.
Because another thought pushed through—
At what cost?
Tanoy squeezed his eyes shut.
His father's voice echoed in his mind—
"We don't want to be a burden…"
His mother's face—
Soft.
Tired.
Loving.
His daughters—
Laughing.
Running toward him.
And Nipa—
Standing beside him, always.
"I can fix this…" Tanoy whispered.
His grip tightened around the pen.
Then—
Slowly—
He began to write.
The first letter.
T
His breath caught.
The ink touched the paper.
Real.
Permanent.
There was no going back after this.
His hand moved again.
A…
Suddenly—
The door slammed open.
Tanoy jerked back violently.
The pen slipped from his hand and rolled across the desk.
He turned.
No one.
The room was empty.
Completely empty.
Tanoy's chest rose and fell rapidly.
"What the—?"
The door was still open.
Swaying slightly.
But there was no one outside.
Silence.
Heavy.
Unnatural.
Tanoy stepped back slowly.
"This isn't real…" he whispered.
His eyes darted around the room.
Everything looked normal.
Too normal.
Then—
His phone buzzed.
He looked down.
📩 "Why did you stop?"
Tanoy's hands clenched.
"You did this," he said under his breath.
📩 "No."
Another message appeared instantly.
📩 "You did."
Tanoy's breathing became uneven again.
"This is a trick," he said. "You're manipulating everything."
📩 "Am I?"
Tanoy didn't respond.
Because he didn't know anymore.
Was it really the man?
Or was it—
Himself?
His eyes slowly moved back to the paper.
His name.
Half-written.
Ta…
That was it.
A line between two worlds.
One step closer—
Or one step away.
Tanoy walked forward again.
Picked up the pen.
This time—
His hand was steadier.
"This ends now," he said quietly.
But even he didn't know—
What he meant.
He looked at the paper one last time.
Fifty lakh.
A solution.
Or a curse.
Tanoy took a deep breath.
Then—
He dropped the pen.
"No."
The word came out firm.
Stronger than before.
"I won't do it."
Silence filled the room again.
For a moment—
Nothing happened.
Then—
His phone vibrated.
📩 "Final answer?"
Tanoy picked it up.
"Yes."
His reply was simple.
Clear.
Firm.
📩 "Understood."
The message appeared.
And then—
Everything went dark.
The lights flickered once.
Twice.
Then completely—
Off.
Tanoy's heart jumped.
"What's happening?"
He took a step back.
Suddenly—
The computer screen on the desk lit up.
Bright.
Blinding.
Tanoy turned toward it.
Words appeared on the screen.
"TEST COMPLETED"
Tanoy froze.
Below it—
Another line slowly formed.
"SUBJECT: TANOY"
His throat went dry.
And then—
The final line appeared.
"RESULT: UNEXPECTED"
Tanoy felt a chill run down his spine.
Unexpected?
What did that mean?
Before he could think further—
The screen went black.
The lights came back on.
Everything—
Normal again.
As if nothing had happened.
Tanoy stood there.
Frozen.
"What… was that?" he whispered.
But no answer came.
Only silence.
He slowly turned—
And walked out of the room.
The corridor looked the same.
The elevator was still there.
Everything was unchanged.
But Tanoy—
Was not.
Because this time—
He had made a choice.
And something—
Somewhere—
Had been watching.
Judging.
And now—
Reacting.
As he stepped into the elevator, his phone buzzed one last time.
He looked at the screen.
A new message.
📩 "Prepare for the third test."
Tanoy's grip tightened.
His reflection stared back at him from the elevator mirror.
But something about it felt different.
Darker.
Colder.
As if—
A part of him had changed.
And the worst part?
He didn't know if that change…
Was good.
Or dangerous.
