Chapter 10 - Shattered Heavens

[Minutes before Jane joined the final struggle]

Jane's consciousness flickered like a dying candle. Her eyelids felt like lead, but as she forced them open, she realized she was resting on something soft. She looked up, her vision blurring, to see Leo's face hovering over her.

Tears traced paths through the dust on her cheeks. "I wasn't... I wasn't strong enough," she whispered, her voice breaking.

Leo gripped her shoulder, his expression a mix of grief and resolve. "Don't you dare blame yourself, Jane. You fought a High-Rank Beast and lived. That's more than anyone else could have done."

Jane turned her gaze toward the center of the wasteland. Lyra was being systematically dismantled by Draven, her demonic aura flickering out. "We're going to lose," Jane breathed, the realization hitting her like a physical blow. "He's going to kill us all."

Leo's eyes darkened, a cold, ancient light beginning to swirl in his pupils. "Jane, I have no choice. I have to use the power."

"No!" Jane gasped, grabbing his sleeve. "It's too dangerous. Your body... it wasn't built to contain that kind of force. You'll burn from the inside out!"

Jane forced herself to stand, her legs trembling. She reached into her pocket and pulled out her final stabilizer pill. She looked at Leo, her gaze filled with a tragic finality. "If I don't come back... run. Don't look back, Leo. Our enemy isn't just a monster; he's a god."

Leo caught her hand, his voice low and fierce. "Stop this nonsense! If Lyra can't touch him, what do you think one more pill is going to do? You're throwing your life away!"

Jane offered him a small, sad smile. "You never know if you don't try, right?" She gently pried his fingers from her wrist. "Don't forget. Run."

She swallowed the pill and vanished in a streak of blue light, heading straight for the Harbinger.

Leo watched the carnage unfold. He saw Jane's desperate strikes, her blue aura flaring one last time before Draven caught her mid-air. The demon's hand closed around her throat, lifting her off the ground like a doll.

*Nova,* Leo thought, his mind screaming. *Stop him. Now!*

*I can,* Nova's voice echoed, cold and absolute. *But I must take full control. Your consciousness will fade. Your body may not survive the resonance.*

*I don't care!* Leo roared internally. *Just save her!*

Leo felt his mind slip away into a vast, starry void. His body slumped for a fraction of a second before snapping upright with a grace that was no longer human.

His short hair lengthened into shimmering, silk-like strands of electric blue. His features softened, shifting into a feminine, ethereal beauty, though his frame remained lean and powerful. A pillar of white-hot spiritual energy erupted from him, the sheer pressure flattening the surrounding SUVs and forcing the nearby soldiers to their knees.

Draven froze. The killing intent he had been radiating vanished, replaced by a primal, paralyzing terror. He dropped Jane, who slumped to the ground, her eyes wide with shock. "No..." she whispered, her voice a mere breath. "Leo..."

Nova walked toward Draven, each step cracking the earth. "You are hurting my host's friend," she said, her voice resonant and layered with a thousand echoes.

Draven fell to his knees, the earth buckling beneath him. "Nova..." he gasped, his voice trembling.

Nova's brow furrowed, her light intensifying. "So, your kind has finally begun the Annihilation. You dare bring your rot to this world?"

Draven's skin began to peel away, his very essence unraveling just from being in her presence. "Just kill me," he choked out. "If I fail... if I do not cull these humans... the King will make my death an eternity of agony. Please... end it."

Nova's expression remained cold. "I have no interest in your mercy. I will simply erase you."

She raised a single hand, her fingers glowing with a light that seemed to consume the shadows. "The Commandment."

She looked at the Harbinger, her gaze absolute. "Begone."

*BOOM.*

The explosion wasn't fire or smoke; it was a silent, blinding erasure of reality. When the light faded, Draven was gone. Not a single atom of the Harbinger remained.

At that moment, the reinforcements from Base 111 roared onto the scene. A lead vehicle skidded to a halt, and Caspian leaped out, his rifle ready. He stopped dead, his jaw dropping as he took in the devastation. "Oh my God... what the hell happened here?"

Nova turned her head, her glowing eyes fixing on Caspian. She suppressed her aura instantly, allowing the humans to breathe again. In a blur of light, she appeared directly in front of him. "They need your help," she said, gesturing toward the fallen Jane and Lyra.

Caspian was terrified. His instincts screamed at him to fire, but he knew with a bone-deep certainty that he was no match for the being in front of him. He lowered his weapon, nodding slowly. "Right. Understood." He turned to his men. "Move in! Secure the survivors! Get them into the base now!"

Nova offered a faint, tired smile. The blue light faded, her hair shortened, and the transformation reversed. Leo's body went limp, collapsing into the dust.

[8 Hours Later - Base 105 Medical Wing]

Voices drifted through the fog of Leo's mind.

"Jane, why didn't you tell us?" Annie's voice was sharp with anxiety. "What if he had gone berserk? He could have leveled the entire sector!"

"I'm sorry," Jane's voice replied, sounding exhausted and small. "I just... I thought you would turn him into a weapon. I wanted him to have a life."

Leo slowly forced his eyes open. "Did we... did we win?"

He saw familiar faces—Jane, Annie, Lyra—and one he didn't recognize. "Am I dead?"

*No, you aren't,* Nova's voice whispered in his mind. *And yes. We won.*

Leo started to smile, but then he realized something was wrong. The faces looking back at him weren't filled with gratitude; they were filled with fear. He tried to move, only to realize he was suspended in a massive, reinforced glass tank filled with a clear, oxygenated fluid.

"Hey!" he shouted, his voice muffled by the liquid. "What the hell is this? Let me out!"

Lyra stepped forward, her expression hard. "You're a threat, Leo. If you lose control, you won't just destroy a base. You could destroy the entire planet. We can't take that risk."

Leo slammed his fist against the glass. "I saved your lives! You should be thanking me, not locking me in a cage!"

"And we are thankful," Lyra said, her voice softening slightly. "But a human controlling that kind of power... your body should have collapsed. I heard you say 'Begone,' and a Harbinger simply ceased to exist. That isn't human. There's an Origin inside you, isn't there?"

Leo let out a frustrated sigh, bubbles rising in the tank. "Jezz, this is how you say thank you? I know I'm dangerous, but this is a bit much."

The man he didn't recognize stepped forward. "Look, we're sorry, but—"

"Who the hell are you?" Leo snapped.

"I'm Caspian. Commander of Base 111."

Leo scoffed. "So you left your base to come play jailer? Great."

"That doesn't matter right now," Caspian said, his tone professional. "We need information. We need to know what we're fighting and how to kill it. And you're the only one who can give us those answers."

"How?" Leo asked.

Caspian pointed at Annie. She took the cue, her voice trembling slightly. "We need you to allow the... the thing inside you to take control. We need to have a conversation with it. Peacefully."

Leo looked at them, his gaze cold. "And what if I don't want to?"

"You must," Lyra interjected, her eyes flashing.

Leo let out a dry laugh. "Look, even if I wanted to, I can't. I'm exhausted. I need to rest before I can let Nova out again."

"But you just did it," Lyra pointed out.

"Yes, and it nearly killed me," Leo replied. He looked around the room, his eyes landing on Jane. She was looking at the floor, her shoulders slumped. She didn't say a word. A pang of disappointment hit him.

"Fine," Leo said, his voice flat. "Come back in two hours. I'll do what you want. Nova will give you the information you need."

"Who's Nova?" Annie asked.

"The spiritual being in me," Leo said, closing his eyes. "Now leave me alone."
