Chapter 74 - Chapter 73: Saturday. The River Bank. Cheongwon Moves.

Saturday cleanup monitoring at seven fifty eight AM.

Han-Ho arrived in the vest.

Dark blue. Work quality. Multiple pockets.

The right pocket held the scan results from the Dragon Vein flow assessment he had done at seven AM before anyone arrived.

The left pocket held the eleven notes.

The bag held everything else.

The S-Ranks arrived in the usual order.

Oh Kyung-Soo first.

He looked at the vest.

Did not say anything about the vest.

Said: "Good morning Han-Ho."

"Good morning Oh Kyung-Soo," said Han-Ho.

Then Baek Sung-Il.

He looked at the vest.

"New vest," said Baek Sung-Il.

"Yes," said Han-Ho.

"For the pockets."

"Yes," said Han-Ho.

"Multiple pockets."

"Yes."

"I destroyed a dam," said Baek Sung-Il.

Han-Ho made a note.

Baek Sung-Il: noted the vest. Cited the dam. Context unclear. Filed.

Baek Sung-Il sat at his monitoring position.

Then Jin Tae-Yang with food.

He looked at the vest.

"Yoo Chae-Won picked that," said Jin Tae-Yang.

"Yes," said Han-Ho.

"She texted me a photo at eight oh three AM yesterday to confirm the fit."

"She asked for a photo confirmation," said Han-Ho.

"She asked Cho Hyun to send one," said Jin Tae-Yang. "He did."

Han-Ho made a note.

Yoo Chae-Won: vest confirmation protocol. Photo to Jin Tae-Yang. Cho Hyun as proxy. Filed.

"The food," said Jin Tae-Yang, setting out the containers. "Same as last week. Plus the soup for the old man."

"Thank you," said Han-Ho.

Jin Tae-Yang looked at the river.

At Cheongi in the shallow section.

He had been looking at Cheongi every Saturday for months.

Cheongi had become part of the river bank the way the monitoring positions had become part of the river bank. You did not arrive and notice Cheongi. You arrived and Cheongi was there the way the river was there. Present. Correct.

Today something was different.

"Han-Ho," said Jin Tae-Yang.

"Yes."

"Cheongi."

Han-Ho looked at the river.

At Cheongi.

Cheongi was not in the shallow section where it had been every Saturday for months.

Cheongi was deeper.

Not much deeper.

Three additional meters from its usual position.

But three meters deeper into the Han River.

Han-Ho pressed his hand against the bank.

Read the Dragon Vein network.

Made a note.

Cheongi: moved three meters deeper. Position change since last Saturday. Reason: Dragon Vein flow rate increase from the ley line network cleaning. The full kingdom clean is feeding additional energy into the Dragon Vein junctions connected to the Han River. Cheongi is repositioning toward the higher flow concentration. Same mechanism as the original three meter move into the river. Following the clean energy. Filed.

He filed it.

Looked at Cheongi.

"Cheongi," said Han-Ho.

Yes.

"The kingdom is clean," said Han-Ho.

Yes. I know.

"You felt it."

Yes.

"When," said Han-Ho.

Cheongi made several sounds in sequence.

Han-Ho listened.

Made notes.

"Cheongi felt the ley line network full clean at three fifty seven PM yesterday," said Han-Ho. "The moment we came back through the Gate. The Dragon Vein network felt the ley line network quality change across the boundary junction simultaneously."

"Cheongi felt it in real time," said Oh Kyung-Soo, who had been listening from his monitoring position.

"Yes," said Han-Ho. "The Dragon Vein and ley line networks share junction points. Full clean on one side is immediately detectable on the other."

"Like the Dragon Vein activation was detectable in the fantasy world," said Oh Kyung-Soo.

"Yes," said Han-Ho. "The same mechanism in reverse."

Oh Kyung-Soo was quiet for a moment.

"The networks are responding to each other," said Oh Kyung-Soo.

"Yes," said Han-Ho. "As the contamination clears the responsiveness increases. The cleaner they become the more they can feel each other." He looked at the river. "Cheongi can feel what is happening in the fantasy world ley lines now. The responsiveness was not sufficient before the kingdom was fully clean."

"What does it feel like," said Oh Kyung-Soo. "To Cheongi."

Han-Ho asked.

Cheongi made sounds.

Han-Ho translated.

"Cheongi says—" He looked at the notes. "Like hearing a voice that has been too quiet to hear clearly becoming clear. Not a new voice. The same voice that was always there. Just clearer."

Oh Kyung-Soo sat with this.

The old man arrived at eight fifteen from the Seocho training.

He looked at Cheongi.

At the new position.

Made no comment.

Sat on the bank.

Drank the tea Han-Ho had brought without being asked.

The S-Ranks filled their monitoring positions.

The Saturday cleanup monitoring proceeded.

At the ten AM break Jin Tae-Yang distributed the food.

The soup for the old man.

The old man accepted it.

Tasted it.

"Jin Tae-Yang," said the old man.

"Yes," said Jin Tae-Yang.

"The soup."

"Yes."

"It is the same as always."

"Yes," said Jin Tae-Yang.

"In twelve weeks," said the old man. "Every Saturday. The same soup."

"You said it was good," said Jin Tae-Yang. "Week one."

"Yes," said the old man. "I did."

"So I bring it," said Jin Tae-Yang. "Every week. Same soup. Same quality."

The old man looked at the soup.

At Jin Tae-Yang.

"In ten thousand years," said the old man. "Nobody has brought me the same thing every week for twelve weeks because I said it was good once."

"You said it was good," said Jin Tae-Yang. "If it is good why would I bring something different."

The old man was quiet.

"Yes," said the old man. "Why would you."

He ate the soup.

Han-Ho noted the exchange.

Did not file it.

Put it in the vest pocket.

Twelve notes now.

At eleven thirty AM something happened that had not happened before.

Cheongi moved again.

Not three meters.

One meter.

Back toward the bank.

Not retreating.

Orienting.

Han-Ho felt the movement through the bank.

Pressed his hand against the ground.

Read it.

"Cheongi," said Han-Ho.

Yes.

"You are orienting toward the bank."

Yes.

"Something is here."

Yes.

"On the bank."

Yes.

"What," said Han-Ho.

A long sequence of sounds.

The most complex communication Cheongi had produced since naming itself.

Han-Ho listened.

Made extensive notes.

Filed four reports.

Then sat back.

Looked at the bank.

At the group on the bank.

At the S-Ranks and the old man and Wei Junhao and Hwang Chulsoo and Baek Suri and Aria and General Ashmark.

At the two cacti.

At the Moru plush that Baek Suri had brought to the river bank three weeks ago because the bank felt incomplete without it.

At Jin Tae-Yang's food containers.

At all of it.

"Han-Ho," said Min-Seo.

"Yes."

"What did Cheongi say."

Han-Ho looked at his notes.

"Cheongi says—" He read carefully. "Cheongi says: the Dragon Vein network has a sound. Not the music the old man described. Different. The specific sound that the network makes when it is carrying what it is supposed to carry. Clean energy flowing correctly through a correct system."

"Yes," said Min-Seo.

"Cheongi says it has been listening to that sound for thirty four weeks," said Han-Ho. "Since the first day of the fracture network cleaning."

"Thirty four weeks is—" Min-Seo calculated. "Since week one. Since you started."

"Yes," said Han-Ho. "Cheongi says the sound has been changing. Every week. Getting clearer. Getting more correct." He looked at the notes. "The Dragon Vein clearing. The upstream junctions. The ley line network activation. The between-layer deposits. Each one making the sound clearer."

"And now," said Min-Seo.

Han-Ho read the final note.

"Cheongi says: yesterday the ley line network of the Kingdom of Solenne reached full clean. And the sound changed." He paused. "For the first time in twenty thousand years the Dragon Vein network and the ley line network are making the same sound simultaneously."

The bank was very quiet.

"The same sound," said Oh Kyung-Soo.

"Yes," said Han-Ho.

"Both networks," said Oh Kyung-Soo.

"Yes."

"In harmony," said Oh Kyung-Soo.

"That is not the word Cheongi used," said Han-Ho. "But yes. Essentially."

Oh Kyung-Soo looked at the river.

At Cheongi.

At the Saturday morning bank.

At everything assembled on it.

He made the sound.

The sound adjacent to laughter.

Not adjacent this time.

He laughed.

The genuine laugh.

Not the first time.

But different from the previous times.

Wider.

Warmer.

The laugh of someone who has been paying attention for thirty years and has arrived at the place where paying attention leads.

"Of course," said Oh Kyung-Soo.

"Of course," said the bag.

"Of course," said Cheongi.

Everyone looked at Cheongi.

Cheongi had never said of course before.

"Cheongi," said Han-Ho.

Yes.

"You said of course."

Yes.

"You learned it."

Yes.

"From the bag."

Yes.

Han-Ho made a note.

Cheongi: said of course. Learned from bag. Of course. Filed.

The Saturday bank did its Saturday things.

Clean.

Both networks.

Simultaneously.

In harmony.
