Chapter 53 - The Limitless Potential of Children

Chapter 53: The Limitless Potential of Children

Setting aside Mizuki's rather complicated, subtle mood for the moment, the battlefield had devolved into utter chaos.

A safe distance away, Joe clutched his hands over his head, his fingers digging into his messy hair. He watched Sora charge headlong into the fray, a wail of pure, unadulterated panic escaping his throat.

"What in the world is going on?!" Joe shrieked, his voice cracking. "It is one thing for Tai and Mizuki to bash heads like barbarians, but why is Sora joining them? She is a girl! This is completely reckless! Someone is going to get seriously hurt!"

"Regarding this phenomenon, I actually have a working hypothesis."

Izzy's calm, measured voice cut through Joe's hysteria. The younger boy stood off to the side, his gaze fixed intently on the aerial brawl. A sharp, analytical light danced in his dark eyes.

"Do you recall what Mizuki explained to us earlier?" Izzy asked, not looking away from the fight. "In this Digital World, human emotions and sheer willpower act as a tangible fuel. They can manifest as raw, physical strength."

He pointed toward the sky, where shockwaves were currently rippling through the clouds. "Tai and Mizuki are deliberately using this brawl to stir up their own emotions, pushing their adrenaline and fighting spirit to the absolute limit. By doing so, they are actively stimulating that latent power."

Izzy adjusted his posture, his tone taking on a lecture-like quality. "The evidence is right in front of us. Whether it is BeelStarmon reaching the Mega level, or MetalGreymon achieving the Ultimate level, it all points to the same conclusion. The sheer, overwhelming combat strength Mizuki and Tai are displaying right now is the ultimate proof of this theory."

The remaining children fell silent, the gears turning in their heads as Izzy's logic settled over them. They watched the sky, the terrifying explosions suddenly making a twisted sort of sense.

Yet, Joe's shoulders remained tense. His fists clenched at his sides, his knuckles turning white.

"I still do not accept it," Joe muttered, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "We are all companions. Even if we need to become stronger to survive, there is absolutely no reason to go to such extreme, violent lengths."

He looked down at his own trembling hands. "And... whether it is Mizuki or Tai, they are still just kids! The responsibility of protecting everyone, the weight of keeping us all alive... how can we expect children to bear that alone?"

A heavy silence hung in the air around the senior member of the group. His body shook with a mixture of fear and frustration, but deep within his eyes, a faint, stubborn spark ignited.

"No." Joe took a heavy, deliberate step forward. He raised his head, his expression hardening into something entirely new. "No matter what, I have to stop them from tearing each other apart!"

He looked down at the white, seal-like creature resting by his feet. "Gomamon! Let's go!"

Gomamon blinked up at Joe, taking in the rare sight of his partner's blazing inner fire. The Digimon slowly raised a small, clawed paw and scratched the back of his head.

"Well, Joe, I really do want to match your energy right now, but..." Gomamon pointed a claw toward the three massive Digimon actively trying to obliterate each other in the stratosphere. He offered a sheepish, toothy grin. "Neither my current form nor my form as Ikkakumon can actually fly."

Joe froze. The blazing fire of his resolve extinguished instantly, his eyes shrinking into blank, comical dots. He stared at his partner in utter disbelief for three agonizing seconds before throwing his head back in a miserable groan.

"Gomamon! I finally managed to act like a cool, dependable senior, and you decide to mock me at a time like this?!"

"Hehe." Gomamon let out a bubbly chuckle. He reached up, patted Joe's calf affectionately with his paw, and then turned his gaze toward the distant battlefield.

"I suppose this is just the harsh cruelty of reality," Gomamon mused cheerfully. "But who cares? We are going in anyway, Joe! Even if we have to do it from the ground!"

Joe stared at the small Digimon's back. The frustration drained out of him, replaced by a fond, helpless sigh. He reached into his pocket, his fingers closing around the cold casing of his Digivice. He pulled it out, thrusting it forward.

"That is enough out of you, Gomamon. Let's do this!"

A blinding pillar of light erupted from the device, engulfing the small sea creature.

Gomamon Digivolve to... Ikkakumon!

The light shattered, revealing a massive, towering walrus covered in thick white fur and a single, jagged red horn. Ikkakumon let out a low, rumbling breath, his blue eyes locked calmly onto the three combatants tearing through the sky above.

For a brief moment, he looked majestic, an immovable beast of the frozen north. Then, he opened his mouth.

"Hey there, little guy, and you two lovely ladies!" Ikkakumon roared toward the heavens. "How about I set off some fireworks to really get this party started?!"

Harpoon Torpedo!

The massive red horn atop his head detached with a mechanical hiss, rocketing upward on a trail of thick gray smoke straight toward the chaotic dogfight.

High above, Angewomon was currently locked in a fierce, high-speed evasion against the combined aerial assaults of Biyomon and MetalGreymon. The sudden whistling sound from below caught her attention. Her golden hair whipped around as she glanced down, spotting the incoming missile.

A serene, almost dangerous smile touched her lips. With a graceful twirl of her wings, she shifted her flight path, catching the edge of the missile's slipstream and effortlessly redirecting its trajectory.

Straight toward MetalGreymon's blind spot.

Bang!

A violent explosion rocked the sky. Thick black smoke billowed outward as MetalGreymon let out a startled roar, his massive tail and rear end taking the full brunt of the blast.

"Ouch! Ikkakumon, what do you think you are doing?!"

While the attack lacked the sheer power to actually damage his Chrome Digizoid armor, having his backside blown up in front of everyone was a severe blow to the giant cyborg's pride. MetalGreymon immediately forgot all about Angewomon, his furious, glowing eyes snapping down to the snowy beast on the ground.

Ikkakumon suddenly felt a very cold drop of sweat roll down the back of his furry neck.

The massive, heavily armed dinosaur descended rapidly, landing with an devastating thud right in front of him. Ikkakumon swallowed hard, taking a slow step back.

"Uh, I really think we can talk this out, Agumon," Ikkakumon offered, his voice pitching up slightly. He offered a wide, nervous smile. "How about I treat you to a nice, fresh fish? My treat!"

MetalGreymon's metal jaw snapped open, revealing rows of razor-sharp teeth. "Sorry, I do not eat fish!"

With a terrifying roar, the Ultimate-level dinosaur lunged forward, jaws snapping shut on empty air as Ikkakumon scrambled backward.

"Waaah! Joe, save me!"

Hearing his partner's desperate cry, Joe instinctively turned to run toward the commotion. But a shadow suddenly fell over him, blocking his path.

The wind whipped through the clearing, rustling the grass. Standing directly in Joe's way was the group's resident tomboy, her arms crossed over her chest.

Sora.

She tilted her head, her eyes narrowing into dangerous little slits. Even though Joe was taller than her, he suddenly felt incredibly small.

"Joe-senpai," Sora said, her voice dripping with a terrifyingly sweet, entirely fake politeness. "Is there a problem here?"

Joe took a step back, his hands coming up defensively. "I... I just need to go talk to Tai!"

"Ah, is that so?"

Joe's eyes darted frantically toward Tai's location. The goggle-wearing boy was currently locked in a staredown with Mizuki, but he shot Joe a desperate, pleading look, silently begging for a rescue.

Joe swallowed a lump in his throat. "I... I just cannot stand by and watch you two continue this madness!"

"So?" Sora pressed, taking a slow, deliberate step forward. The fake smile on her face widened, not reaching her eyes.

"So... so..."

Cold sweat beaded on Joe's forehead. He backed up another step, completely paralyzed by the sheer intimidating aura radiating from the girl. He realized, with a sinking feeling of defeat, that he was absolutely powerless against his own companions.

Meanwhile, taking full advantage of the fact that Sora was busy terrorizing Joe, Tai managed to slip away from the immediate danger zone. He jogged back over to where Mizuki was standing, wiping a bead of sweat from his brow.

"Phew," Tai breathed out, a wide, relieved grin spreading across his face. "It really is so much easier dealing with a boy."

Mizuki took a slow, deliberate step backward. His expression flattened into a mask of deep, silent judgment. He stared at Tai as if the other boy had suddenly grown a second head.

"What exactly is that supposed to mean?" Mizuki asked, his tone dangerously flat.

Tai blinked, completely oblivious to the implications of his own words. The momentary blankness on his face quickly vanished, replaced once again by that burning, relentless fighting spirit. He slammed his fists together.

"Never mind that! More, let's get back to the fight!" Tai declared, his eyes shining. "I can feel the power inside my blood absolutely boiling!"

Mizuki let out a soft breath, the tension leaving his shoulders. A familiar, competitive smirk touched his lips. He raised his right hand, curling his fingers in a slow, taunting beckon.

"Alright then. Come and get it."

From the sidelines, Izzy watched the exchange.

The raw, unfiltered emotion radiating from his friends was infectious. The usual calm, detached logic that governed Izzy's mind began to fray at the edges, replaced by an unfamiliar, burning itch in his chest. His fingers twitched. He wanted to move. He wanted to act.

"Izzy, it looks like we have been beaten to the punch."

Tentomon hovered right beside his partner's ear, his complex eyes tracking Izzy's shifting expressions. The insectoid Digimon seemed to read his tamer's mind perfectly.

"So, what is our next move?" Tentomon asked, his wings buzzing with anticipation.

Izzy turned his head. "Tentomon, do you want to join them?"

Tentomon met his partner's gaze head-on. "The real question is, what about you, Izzy?"

"Me..."

Izzy murmured the word softly. A deep, meaningful light ignited in his dark eyes, sharper and brighter than ever before. He looked down at his own hands, his mind racing through thousands of lines of theoretical code.

"As for me," Izzy began, a small, confident smile pulling at the corner of his mouth. "I actually have a little idea I want to test."

He looked up, nodding at his partner. "But more, Tentomon, you go on ahead."

"Understood! In that case, here I come!"

Tentomon's wing covers snapped open. He launched himself into the sky, a streak of red against the clouds, as the blinding light of digivolution consumed him.

Tentomon Digivolve to... Kabuterimon!

The massive, blue-armored insect materialized in the air, his four wings beating with hurricane force. He immediately locked onto the brawling giants above.

"Everyone, please stop fighting! We are all companions!" Kabuterimon bellowed at the top of his lungs.

Simultaneously, he charged a massive sphere of crackling blue electricity between his four hands and hurled it directly at MetalGreymon's face.

Mega Blaster!

Watching his partner actively preach peace while launching lethal artillery strikes, Izzy let out a genuine, quiet laugh. He then closed his eyes, pulling his focus entirely inward.

The other children relied on explosive emotional arousal to trigger their partners' digivolutions. Anger, courage, love, responsibility. But Izzy was different.

The digivolution of his partner did not stem from a fiery heart, but from a relentless, insatiable thirst for knowledge.

He remembered the day he had successfully analyzed the underlying data code of Tentomon's Super Shocker attack through his laptop. By understanding the very fabric of that digital attack, he had forcefully triggered Tentomon's digivolution to the Champion level.

From that exact moment, Izzy understood the unique quality Mizuki had spoken of. His spiritual power, his Digi-Soul, was not born from battle lust. It was the pure, unadulterated drive to pursue knowledge and unravel the absolute truth of the universe.

Knowledge.

Having finally clarified his own path, Izzy's mind shifted into overdrive. His brain operated at a terrifying speed. Using the previously analyzed data of Tentomon as a foundational baseline, he began to actively deduce and construct the complex data matrix of Kabuterimon within his own mind.

Lines of code flashed behind his closed eyelids. Equations balanced. Variables locked into place.

There was no doubt. The result was already calculated.

Izzy opened his eyes. He raised his right hand, his palm facing outward.

A sharp crackle of static filled the air. Arcs of brilliant blue electricity sparked into existence, dancing violently across his fingertips. At the exact same moment, a deep, resonant purple light flared to life in the center of his chest.

The glowing, complex pattern of a pair of spectacles—the Crest of Knowledge—burned brightly against his shirt.

'Tai, are you ready for this?'Izzy thought, his gaze locking onto the two boys across the field.'And Mizuki... I am going to show both of you exactly how much I have grown.'He planted his feet firmly into the dirt, the electrical charge around his hand intensifying into a blinding sphere of condensed data.'I will prove that I can keep up with your pace. I will answer the help you have given me with my own strength.'

Driven by the pure thrill of discovery, Izzy thrust his glowing hand forward, aiming directly at the space between Tai and Mizuki.

"Mega Blaster..." Izzy whispered, his eyes flashing with purple light. "...Izzy version."

"Fire!"
