Chapter 24 - The Determination to Become Stronger

Chapter 24: The Determination to Become Stronger

Takeru could not grasp the complex technical jargon passing between Mizuki and Izzy, but the sheer confidence radiating from the older boys left him completely spellbound.

"Brother Mizuki and Brother Izzy are so amazing!" Takeru cheered, his small hands clasping together. He spun around to look at the goggle-wearing boy nearby. "And Brother Taichi too! You got just as strong as Brother Mizuki so fast!"

Taichi rubbed the back of his neck, a sheepish grin breaking across his face. "Ah, no, no, not really. I just kind of went with it."

Takeru's bright, clear eyes practically sparkled with unfiltered hero worship. Standing just a few paces away, Matt watched the exchange with a tightening jaw. A sour, uncomfortable knot twisted in his chest. Takeru was his little brother. He was supposed to be the one Takeru looked up to, the one who protected him. Why was his own flesh and blood staring at the others with such absolute awe?

Driven by that sudden, sharp spike of jealousy, Matt stepped forward, his voice cutting through the warm atmosphere.

"Alright, how long are you guys going to keep talking?" Matt crossed his arms, his tone sharper than he intended. "It is about time we ate, is it not? And besides, fighting is something the Digimon should do. That is why they are here."

He looked around the group, his gaze lingering on Taichi and Mizuki. "Ultimately, we are just kids. What can children actually achieve, no matter how hard we try to act tough?"

Silence fell over the clearing. While Matt's delivery was harsh and laced with frustration, the heavy reality of his words hung in the air. They were, at their core, just ordinary human children stranded in a bizarre world. They did not possess the towering, durable bodies of Champion-level monsters, nor could they breathe fire or summon lightning. No matter how much willpower they mustered, a single stray attack from a hostile Digimon could easily break their fragile bones.

Matt's outburst acted like a bucket of freezing water, instantly dousing the small, eager flames of courage that had just begun to ignite in the group's chests. The restless, excited energy settled into a heavy, sobering quiet.

However, a few refused to let that fire die.

"You are right, Matt." Taichi nodded slowly, his expression unusually serious as he acknowledged the blonde boy's point.

Matt opened his mouth, perhaps to soften his previous statement, but Taichi beat him to it, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. "However, I still refuse to give up on the idea of getting stronger."

Taichi turned his head, his gaze softening as it landed on the small girl standing quietly by his side. "Because I have to protect my younger sister, Kari."

He reached out, gently ruffling Kari's short hair, before shifting his attention to the orange reptile standing faithfully at his feet. "Besides, Agumon is my partner. Standing back and letting my best friend fight alone, taking all the pain and risk... I could never do something like that!"

"Taichi..." Agumon murmured, his large green eyes shimmering with deep emotion. Hearing his partner's passionate declaration, the small dinosaur clenched his claws, silently vowing to the digital heavens that he would protect Taichi with his very life.

Izzy adjusted his laptop strap and stepped up right beside Taichi. "I feel exactly the same way."

The young genius looked around the circle of his peers. "While we can indeed rely on our Digimon to handle the brunt of the combat, ultimately, we must cultivate our own strength. No one can guarantee that an enemy will strictly target our partners and ignore us. Classmate Mizuki's leg injury... does that not perfectly prove the point?"

"Ah, well, about that..." Mizuki scratched his cheek, a dry, awkward chuckle escaping his lips as the spotlight suddenly swung in his direction.

Beside him, LadyDevimon crossed her long arms. Her crimson eyes narrowed into a sharp, deeply resentful glare that practically bored a hole through the side of Mizuki's head. The dark fallen angel remembered exactly how he had acquired that injury, and it had absolutely nothing to do with an enemy outsmarting them.

Feeling the sheer weight of her annoyance, Mizuki raised his hands in a placating gesture, offering her a sheepish, gentle smile. "Alright, alright. I promise you, I will not be so reckless in the future."

LadyDevimon leaned down, her pale face inches from his, her tone carrying a mix of dark warning and genuine concern. "Then it is a promise. Pinky swear."

"Mm, pinky swear." Mizuki hooked his little finger around her long, clawed digit, sealing the ridiculous yet entirely sincere pact.

Watching this bizarre, oddly domestic exchange between the white-haired boy and the terrifying dark angel, Izzy blinked. The gears in his brilliant mind turned, quickly piecing together that Mizuki's injury was entirely self-inflicted from some reckless stunt, rather than a vicious enemy ambush. Izzy coughed awkwardly into his fist, his cheeks flushing slightly at his own miscalculation.

Quickly suppressing his embarrassment, Izzy straightened his posture and returned to the serious matter at hand.

"In any case, much like Taichi, I refuse to give up on becoming stronger." Izzy looked down at the large, red insectoid companion hovering near his knees. "To achieve this, Tentomon... can I ask for your help?"

"You do not even need to ask. I will always help you, Izzy."

Tentomon, who had been silently observing his partner's every micro-expression, delivered his response with unwavering loyalty. He might not possess the boisterous, fiery energy of Agumon, nor the sleek agility of the other Digimon, but his devotion to Izzy burned just as brightly. He had his own steady, analytical way of standing by his partner's side, and he would see this through to the very end.

Following Taichi and Izzy's declarations, Kari stepped forward, her small hands clutching the hem of her shirt.

"I am very happy that you are willing to protect me, big brother," Kari began, her voice soft but carrying a surprising weight. "But... please forgive Kari for not being able to simply hide behind you."

She tilted her head up, meeting Taichi's surprised gaze with deep seriousness. "I do not have my own Digimon partner yet. Does that not mean I need to become even stronger than everyone else? Whether it is to keep myself safe, or to protect you when you need it."

"Kari... you..." Taichi faltered, letting out a long, heavy sigh. Looking down at his little sister's tender yet strangely mature face, he found the words of refusal dying in his throat. He wanted to shelter her from everything, but he knew she was right.

At that moment, a light weight settled onto Taichi's shoulder. He turned to see Mizuki standing beside him.

"Kari is right, Taichi. You should support her decision," Mizuki said, his usual teasing tone replaced by a quiet, grounded sincerity. "Ultimately, this is no longer the peaceful world you are familiar with. None of us know what horrors we might encounter tomorrow. Even I cannot guarantee with absolute certainty that I will survive out here."

Mizuki offered a small, reassuring smile. "Having the power to protect oneself is never a bad thing."

Taichi looked into Mizuki's eyes—striking, clear pink gemstones born of his albinism—and saw the raw, uncompromising truth reflected there. After a brief moment of internal struggle, Taichi gave a firm nod, finally accepting the reality of their situation.

The quiet exchange breathed life back into the group. The flames of determination that Matt had nearly extinguished flared up brighter than before in the hearts of the other children.

Even Takeru, usually so eager to please, mustered an uncharacteristic surge of courage to stand against his older brother's logic.

"Brother, everyone is right!" Takeru insisted, his small fists clenched at his sides. "It is not a bad thing for us to learn how to fight and become stronger! You agree too, right? Patamon? Gabumon?"

"Mm!" Patamon chirped from atop Takeru's head, flapping his bat-like ears in enthusiastic agreement.

Compared to the little flying mammal, Gabumon's reaction was far more subdued. The reptilian creature wearing a fur pelt simply looked at Takeru, then slowly shifted his dark eyes toward Matt. Gabumon could sense the turbulent emotions swirling inside his human partner. He knew Matt was struggling to accept this harsh new reality, and perhaps struggling to fully accept him as well. Yet, despite the emotional distance, Gabumon remained steadfast. He would respect whatever choice Matt made, and he would protect the blonde boy with everything he had.

Feeling the heavy weight of Takeru's eager gaze and Gabumon's silent, unwavering watch, Matt stood frozen. A fierce battle waged within his chest. Logic dictated that Mizuki and Izzy were absolutely correct; survival required strength. But his pride fiercely rebelled against the idea.

They were all just kids. Why were Taichi and Mizuki suddenly leaps and bounds ahead of the rest of them? Mizuki, with his mysterious background and overwhelming power, was an anomaly he could somewhat rationalize. But Taichi?

'Why Taichi?'Matt thought, his fingernails biting into his palms as his fists clenched tightly.'He is just a normal kid from the same camp... just like the rest of us.'

He took a deep breath, forcing the bitter jealousy down into the depths of his stomach. He could not let his own insecurities hold his brother back.

"Alright, Takeru," Matt finally exhaled, his rigid posture relaxing just a fraction. "Since that is the case... let us all become stronger together."

"Yay! I knew you would agree, Brother!" Takeru cheered, launching himself forward and wrapping his arms tightly around Matt's waist.

"Then it is a promise, everyone." Seeing the notoriously stubborn Matt finally yield and join their ranks, Taichi secretly let out a long sigh of relief. He raised a fist high into the air, a wide, infectious grin spreading across his face.

"Starting tomorrow, whether we are Digimon or humans, we are all going to train and become stronger together!"

"Yeah!" a chorus of voices, both human and digital, roared into the sky, their unified cheer echoing through the dense foliage of the island.

Just as the children's triumphant shouts reached their peak, the bushes rustled heavily. Leomon stepped into the clearing, hauling a thoroughly exhausted and battered Ogremon over his broad shoulder.

The noble beast warrior paused, blinking in sheer bewilderment at the circle of fired-up children and their equally pumped-up partners. For some inexplicable reason, listening to their vibrant, blood-pumping cheers sent a sudden, ominous chill crawling straight up Leomon's spine.

'Why do I suddenly feel like my life is about to get significantly harder?' Leomon thought, a massive sweatdrop practically forming on the back of his mane.
