Chapter 181 - The Gambler's Trap

The air in the Rainbase tavern was thick with the scent of cheap ale and cheaper desperation. Smoke curled from the cigar clamped between Captain Smoker's teeth, a gray wreath around his stern face.

"This city is a powder keg, Tashigi," he growled, his eyes scanning the crowded room. Every face looked like a potential threat. "Crocodile's playing a game here. I can feel it in the air—like static before a storm."

Lieutenant Tashigi adjusted her glasses, her hand resting on the hilt of her sword. "The reports of Baroque Works activity have tripled in the last forty-eight hours. But without proof linking them directly to Sir Crocodile…"

"Proof," Smoker scoffed, the word tasting bitter. "We're not here for proof. We're here to stop whatever—"

The tavern doors burst open with a crash that silenced the room.

"WATERRRR!" a voice bellowed. "WE'RE DYING! GIVE US ALL YOUR WATER!"

Luffy and Usopp stumbled in, sunburned and panting, their clothes caked with desert dust. They made a beeline for the nearest table where a patron sat with a pitcher.

"Mine!" Luffy declared, snatching it up.

Recognition struck all four of them at once.

Smoker's eyes widened. "Straw Hat?!"

Luffy's jaw dropped. "White Smoke Guy?!"

Usopp's face went pale. "Oh no, oh no, oh no—"

What happened next unfolded in a comical, horrifying second. In sheer panic, both Luffy and Usopp spewed their mouthfuls of precious water directly at the Marines—a perfect, twin-arc spray that drenched Smoker's coat and plastered Tashigi's hair to her forehead.

The tavern fell deathly silent.

Luffy blinked. Usopp whimpered.

"RUN!" they screamed in unison, spinning on their heels and bolting back into the sun-scorched street.

Smoker slowly wiped the water from his face, the veins in his neck pulsing. The cigar in his mouth had gone out. "After them," he said, his voice dangerously calm. "Now."

*

"Where are those idiots?" Nami muttered, tapping her foot in the shadow of a sandstone archway. The rest of the crew was scattered around her, trying to look inconspicuous and failing miserably.

Vivi wrung her hands, her eyes darting through the crowd. "Chopper's all alone back at the hideout. If the Marines are sweeping the city…"

"Don't worry about the reindeer," Zoro said, not opening his eyes as he leaned against the wall. "He's tougher than he looks."

Sanji exhaled a stream of blue smoke. "What he means is, worry about the two morons who went for water an hour ago and probably got lost in a teacup."

"THEY'RE COMING! THEY'RE ALL COMING!"

Luffy and Usopp rounded a distant corner at a dead sprint, their faces masks of pure terror. And behind them, a cloud of white smoke billowed, with the furious forms of Smoker and Tashigi at its core.

Nami's blood ran cold. "No… NO! DON'T RUN TOWARD US, YOU IDIOTS!"

But it was too late. The Marines spotted the gathered Straw Hats.

"All units!" Tashigi's voice cut through the din. "Straw Hat Pirates, in the square! Apprehend them!"

Worse still, the commotion drew other eyes. From balconies and street corners, sharp-faced men and women in civilian clothes perked up. Whispered into transponder snails. Their gazes locked onto Vivi, then the Straw Hats. Recognition flashed—and with it, cold intent.

Baroque Works.

"Everyone!" Luffy yelled, skidding to a halt in front of the group. "New plan! Meet at Croc's place!"

"Croc's place?" Nami shrieked. "You mean his heavily guarded casino fortress?!"

"Yep! See you there!" And he was off again, a rubbery blur heading for the city's center.

"Luffy, wait!" Smoker roared, his lower body dissolving into smoke as he launched himself after the captain.

Sanji dropped his cigarette, grinding it under his heel. "Looks like we're doing this the hard way." He fell into a fighting stance, but his eyes flicked to Zoro. "You in, moss-head?"

Zoro had already drawn two swords. Then he saw Tashigi breaking off from Smoker, her sword shining in the sun. He saw her face, so eerily familiar…

He sheathed his blades. "Nope."

"What?!" Sanji gaped as Zoro turned and sprinted in the opposite direction.

"I'm not fighting her! You deal with it!"

"Coward!"

The chaos splintered. Usopp and Nami, the least combat-ready, found themselves peeled away from the group, darting down a narrow alley only to find it blocked by three grim-faced agents.

"A sniper and the navigator," one hissed, cracking his knuckles. "The boss will reward us well for this."

"Usopp!" Nami cried, clutching her Clima-Tact.

"Leave it to the Great Captain Usopp!" Usopp yelled, his voice trembling as he fumbled with his slingshot. They managed to duck and weave, leading their pursuers on a frantic chase through laundry lines and market stalls, finally losing them in a crowded bazaar—only to stumble directly into another waiting circle of agents.

"End of the line," their leader smirked.

A blur of green and steel cut between them.

Shing. Shing. Shing.

Three soft sounds, and the agents collapsed.

Zoro stood before them, Wado Ichimonji gleaming. "You two are a magnet for trouble. Move. The casino's this way."

Regrouping in frantic bursts, the Straw Hats converged on the towering, opulent structure known as Rain Dinners. Marines were closing in from behind, their shouts echoing off the grand buildings. Baroque Works agents watched from the shadows, reporting their every move.

They crashed through the casino's gilded doors as one.

*

Inside, the world was a symphony of clinking chips, spinning roulette wheels, and forced laughter. The air was cool, perfumed, and heavy with greed.

Luffy didn't break stride. He marched to the center of the lavish floor, drew a deep breath, and bellowed, "CROCODILE! GET OUT HERE AND FIGHT ME!"

The music died. Every head turned. High-stakes games froze. A hundred wealthy, dangerous patrons stared at the dusty, determined boy and his ragged crew.

The casino's massive security detail converged. "Remove them!" the manager snarled.

Before the Straw Hats could react, Smoker exploded through the entrance, reforming in a swirl of smoke. "Straw Hat! You're not going anywhere!"

"Captain Smoker," a smooth, chilling voice echoed from a mezzanine above. All eyes lifted. Crocodile stood there, a golden hook gleaming at his side, a cigar smoldering in his mouth. He looked amused. "And the Straw Hat Pirates. To what do I owe this… disruptive honor?"

"I'm here to kick your ass!" Luffy declared, pointing.

Crocodile's smile didn't reach his eyes. "Such fire. For causing a scene in my establishment, you will be detained. Security, if you please."

A fight erupted—Luffy a whirlwind of rubbery limbs against a tide of guards. But Crocodile merely nodded to a well-dressed attendant.

"Escort our other… guests to the VIP room. Let's not disturb the paying customers."

Sanji eyed the approaching attendants suspiciously. "This feels too easy."

But they were surrounded—by guards, by Marines, by the watching, silent crowd. With no better option, they allowed themselves to be led away from the main floor, down a plush corridor, and through a set of ornate double doors into a luxurious, windowless chamber.

The doors shut behind them with a soft, final click.

"A trap," Zoro stated, hand on his sword.

"Obviously," Nami whispered, her knuckles white on her weapon.

Smoker looked around, his senses screaming. "This room…"

The floor gave way.

It wasn't a collapse—it was a designed, smooth descent. The entire chamber floor was a giant elevator, plunging them down into the bowels of the casino. They landed with a jarring thud in a dim, circular pit. Bars, thick and dark, shot up from the floor around the perimeter, sealing them in.

Luffy rushed the bars, only to recoil with a sharp cry of pain. His arm smoked where it had touched the metal.

"Sea Stone," Smoker said, his voice grim as he placed a hand against a bar and immediately sagged, his power nullified. He looked at the stunned pirates. "It's a mineral that robs Devil Fruit users of their strength. It's what Marine cells are lined with." He rattled the bars. "This isn't a holding cell. This is a cage for exotic animals."

From the shadows beyond the bars, figures emerged. Dozens of Baroque Works agents, led by officers they'd come to know—Mr. 4, Miss Merry Christmas, Mr. 1, and Miss Doublefinger. They looked down at their captured prey with predatory smiles.

But Crocodile himself stepped into the dim light, his form towering over the pit. He ignored the furious Straw Hats and the seething Marine. His eyes were fixed on Vivi.

"Princess Vivi," he crooned, his voice dripping with false sympathy. "You've led your friends on such a futile journey. And now you get to watch what happens to those who defy a natural order."

He raised his golden hook, and the ceiling above the cage began to retract. Sand, an endless torrent of dry, suffocating desert sand, began to pour into the prison from a wide chute above.

It was slow at first, a trickle dusting their feet. Then it grew, a relentless, cascading waterfall of earth.

Luffy strained against the Sea Stone bars, his strength gone. Zoro slashed at the sand, but it just reformed. Nami and Usopp tried to claw their way up the sides, only to slide back down as the sand level rose past their ankles. Sanji kicked at the bars in a fury, to no avail. Smoker could only watch, his power utterly useless.

Vivi screamed, "Stop! Please!"

Crocodile leaned over the edge, his face a mask of serene cruelty. "This is the fate of dreamers in the desert, Princess. They get buried."

The sand was at their knees now, cold and heavy. Rising. Relentless.

And from the darkness behind Crocodile, a new, slender figure emerged—a woman with glasses and a calm, analytical gaze. She held a transponder snail.

"The rebel army has engaged the royal guard at Katorea, sir," she reported. "The war for Alabasta has officially begun."

Crocodile's smile was a ghastly thing. "Perfect. Let them tear each other apart." He looked back down into the pit, at the desperate faces of the Straw Hats. "As for you… you'll be nothing but bones and forgotten dreams by sundown. A fitting end for fools who thought they could challenge a Warlord of the Sea."

The sand poured down, a golden, grinding tomb.

And as it rose past their waists, Luffy locked eyes with his crew, his voice a raw scrape against the rushing noise. "I'm sorry… I got us trapped."

The sand swallowed his apology, rising toward their chests, inescapable and final.

Above them, Crocodile turned to leave, his final words drifting down. "Enjoy the show, Princess. It's the last one you'll ever see."

The light from above began to narrow as the hatch started to close, leaving them in near-darkness with only the endless, suffocating hiss of the falling sand.
