Chapter 90 - Chapter 90 — What Fell from the Sky

The coordinates awakened by the medallion did not point toward any visible place on a map.

Mu Qingxue traced the direction across three regional charts and discovered that the line crossed a roadless mountain range before sinking toward an empty point. Gu Tian compared the mark with the underground mural. The result was disturbing: the direction matched an incomplete branch of the ancient network beneath the mountain.

—It is not indicating a horizontal distance —Mu Qingxue said—. It is indicating a layer.

—Another underground level? —Han Yue asked.

—More than that —Gu Tian replied—. A folded position. A place occupying the same territory without touching it normally.

Lin Yuan held the medallion in one hand. Since the shrine, the object had not become fully cold again. It pulsed at intervals, like a small heart trying to synchronize with something distant.

The system appeared when he was alone.

Target partially located: Lower Anchor Seventeen.

Access condition: bloodline memory or compatible family key.

Danger: detection by superior hostile force.

Lin Yuan dismissed the message.

He could not take the entire sect into an unknown route. He also could not ignore the first direct clue about his fall. They decided to activate the memory crystal found underground and combine it with the medallion's signal. Mu Qingxue would build an isolation formation. Gu Tian would control the buried heart. Jian Mu and Han Yue would defend the entrance. No one else would know the details.

Preparation took a full day.

In the central chamber, they placed the crystal atop the awakened column. Mu Qingxue arranged twelve plates around it and joined each with silver threads. Gu Tian inserted the incomplete key fragment into a side slot. Lin Yuan occupied the center with the medallion against his chest.

—If the memory tries to drag you away —Mu Qingxue said—, release the medallion.

—I do not know whether it will let me.

—Then I will cut the formation.

Gu Tian pointed toward the buried heart.

—And I will cut the flow even if I lose the chamber.

Lin Yuan nodded.

—Begin.

The crystal ignited.

The chamber disappeared beneath a storm of light.

Lin Yuan did not watch an image from outside. He stood within it.

A dark red sky spread above suspended palaces. Mountains floated among clouds crossed by lightning. The air contained such immense pressure that the present Lin Yuan could not have breathed there. Yet the memory held him as a witness.

He heard bells.

Not celebration. Alarm.

A woman ran through a jade corridor carrying an infant wrapped in white cloth. He could not see her face; light distorted the details. But he recognized the medallion in her hand.

—The outer seal has fallen —a male voice said behind her.

A man covered in blood closed a door with his palm. The emblem of a constellation marked his armor.

—Is the family route still open?

—Only the lower route. It is damaged.

—Then use it.

—It may cast him beyond known boundaries.

—That or surrender him to the Eclipse.

The infant cried.

Lin Yuan felt the sound inside his chest.

The woman held the child tighter.

—His bloodline has not awakened. The fall will destroy his meridians.

—The medallion can seal him and protect the soul.

—Not the entire body.

An explosion shook the corridor. The jade door cracked.

The man looked at the woman.

—If he survives, the family will find him.

—And if the seal hides his presence too well?

—Then he will live. That must be enough.

The memory changed.

There was a circular altar. Elders fought figures wearing porcelain masks. Blood covered celestial symbols. A rift opened beneath the altar like a bottomless abyss.

The woman placed the medallion against the infant's chest. Her blood fell across the metal.

—By the blood of the primary line —she whispered—, seal his aura, guard his name, and carry him beyond their hands.

The Firmament-Sealed Medallion shone.

Lin Yuan tried to approach. He wanted to see her face. He wanted to ask who she was, whether she was his mother, whether she survived.

The memory did not answer.

A masked figure broke through the outer formation. The blood-covered man met it. The woman lifted the infant above the rift.

For an instant, she seemed to hesitate.

Lin Yuan's internal demon awakened through the image.

She threw you away.

The voice did not come from the system or the medallion. It was the ancient wound trying to claim the memory.

She let you fall.

Lin Yuan felt anger, fear, and the old certainty of abandonment.

Then he saw the woman's hands.

They were trembling.

Not from rejection.

From pain.

She kissed the infant's forehead.

—Lin Yuan —she spoke his name for the first time—. Live.

And she released him.

The medallion opened a sphere of light around the child. The rift closed behind him just as the Eclipse figures reached the altar.

The man shouted an order:

—Destroy the anchor!

The memory filled with fire.

Lin Yuan was torn free violently.

He returned to the chamber on his knees, gasping. Mu Qingxue held two shattered plates. Gu Tian had both hands pressed against the column.

—Cut the connection —Lin Yuan said.

—A signal is still escaping —Mu Qingxue answered.

The crystal emitted a piercing shriek.

At the surface, the alarm bells began to ring.

Jian Mu appeared in the doorway.

—Attack.

—Who? —Gu Tian asked.

—Bone crows. Dozens.

The signal had been detected.

They rushed to the surface. The sky above the mountain was covered by birds constructed from black bones and hardened feathers. They were not living creatures; threads of dark qi held them together. Each carried a small seal in its chest.

Mother Crow had been waiting for a reaction.

—Do not allow them to reach the core! —Lin Yuan ordered.

Han Yue raised his spear, but remembered his training and did not release fire in every direction. He concentrated flame into precise arcs that brought down birds without touching the roofs. Jian Mu severed the control threads. Su Wan froze whole clusters. Outer disciples protected the residents inside the second ring.

Mu Qingxue activated the layered barrier.

—They are not trying to kill —she said—. They are mapping our formations through the response.

Lin Yuan understood. Every crow that struck a layer sent information back to its creator.

—Change the pattern every three breaths. Mo Qian, create a false opening in the west. Han Yue, concentrate the fire there when they enter.

The battle became a duel of information. Mu Qingxue altered routes. Gu Tian shut down nodes before they could be measured. Lin Yuan directed the disciples. The crows penetrated the first ring and discovered a false weakness. Seventeen descended at once toward the west.

Han Yue smiled.

—Now.

A controlled pillar of fire consumed them.

The final crow reached the terrace before the main hall. Lin Yuan caught it in a hand wrapped with qi. The seal in its chest opened and projected Mother Crow's veiled face.

—So you awakened a memory —the projection said.

Lin Yuan tightened his fingers around the bone neck.

—And you confirmed that you fear what it contains.

The woman laughed softly.

—I do not fear a lost cub. I fear the noise it may make when it cries toward the heavens.

—Then listen carefully.

Lin Yuan crushed the crow.

The projection vanished.

The attack ended soon afterward. There were minor injuries, damaged roofs, and several formation layers consumed, but no one died.

Among the remains, the boy who had carried a stone for the first wall found a bone feather. He brought it to Lin Yuan without touching the sharp edge.

—Will they come back? —he asked.

Lin Yuan looked at the black feather.

—Yes.

—Then do we keep building the wall?

—Higher.

The boy nodded as if the answer were enough and ran toward the workers.

At dusk, Lin Yuan returned to the underground chamber. The memory crystal had split. Only one frozen image remained: the woman's hand upon the medallion.

The system appeared.

Partial bloodline memory recovered.

Truth confirmed: the porter was not abandoned.

Main mission updated: find the route to the Lin Family of the Celestial Firmament.

Prerequisite: protect the Primordial Firmament Sect from superior detection.

Lin Yuan closed his eyes.

Throughout his life, he had imagined many reasons for being abandoned. None involved burning palaces, a family fighting to save him, and a woman speaking his name before casting him toward the only chance to live.

He did not know whether she remained alive.

He did not know who had betrayed the family or how much time had passed in the higher worlds.

But he knew something that changed the foundation of his pain.

They had not discarded him.

They had fought so he could survive.

Lin Yuan opened his eyes and held the medallion.

Above him, the sect repaired the damage from the attack. Hammers, voices, and footsteps passed through the stone.

The family he had lost existed somewhere beyond the heavens.

The family he was building breathed above his head.

Between them stretched enemies, worlds, and a broken celestial route.

For the first time, Lin Yuan no longer felt that he walked forward to prove he had deserved to be kept.

He walked because someone had paid a terrible price to give him that chance.

One day he would find the Lin Family of the Celestial Firmament.

Not as a lost child demanding answers.

But as the founder of a sect capable of crossing worlds and forcing the Eclipse to remember the mistake of leaving him alive.
