Chapter 3
After wandering around for a bit, I found a bat that was a little rusty and had a crack in it. I picked it up.
'Meh, it'll work as a weapon. It's a bit messed up, but it'll do.'
As I held it, I instinctively felt there was something else I could do besides turning it into a treasure spirit.
'Huh… so there's even more to my technique. Let's see what happens.'
I ordered my cursed energy to imbue itself into the bat without creating a treasure spirit. I watched with awe as the quality of the bat slowly restored itself. I could tell my cursed energy usage was still kind of dogshit—both my cursed energy and I were new to its uses—but it was improving faster than I was.
'Hmm. Seems like I found another decent way to make money on top of the others I thought of. Plus, this could be a pretty good way to train. If I have my cursed energy focus on the movement and channeling while I focus on its efficiency, I can effectively multitask. Same reward as two people delegating separate jobs instead of one person doing both.'
"Two minds are better than one, I guess."
I eyed the now-pristine metal bat.
'So I can restore the quality of objects, with the cursed energy cost relative to the size and complexity of the item.'
I decided to imbue the bat with a treasure spirit and felt my control over it vastly increase. Wanting to see what it could do, I swung it at a tree, feeling my body align slightly with the swing.
Boom.
I gaped at the massive dent it left in the side of the tree.
'What the fuck.'
"And they said bats were for Grade 4 curses."
'That swing wasn't even full force because I didn't want to hurt my hands. And this thing is just gonna get better at its purpose over time.'
'I should make a full-on arsenal before I hunt down a cursed spirit. As tempted as I am to just immediately go grinding to cash out for that max luck spin, I ain't throwing my life away on some Megumi-type shit.'
I went back to the orphanage with a plan to prepare myself for the great grind.
-Two Days Later-
'Alright. Inventory check time. Let's see what I've got in total.'
Over these two days, I had been making treasure spirits that would be useful in battle—and a few I just casually wanted. One of the most useful ones was a metal mechanical pencil I had found and restored. I used it alongside a notebook to sketch ideas. The pencil's newly born, lackluster drawing skills were already far better than mine, but I mainly used them to keep notes of my items.
'Show me the list.'
The book opened.
____
Toy Rabbit – Now named Wibbles by Ren.
Wibbles is a spirit that provides a comforting feeling to children holding or playing with it. Interestingly, children are unusually open to others playing with it and don't seem greedy when it comes to sharing. As a side note, the comfort it can provide adults is extremely meager.
Duffel Bag – A spirit that shrinks the master's bulkier items for easier storage. This effect is much weaker on items that are already small, but it can still make them smaller at the cost of even more CE.
Running Shoes – A spirit that increases the master's speed and jump height. This item also disperses the force on the master's feet upon landing. Extremely comfortable to wear and perfectly fitted to the master's feet.
Metal Mechanical Pencil –
I am one of the master's most useful, fun, cool, and loyal spirits. I draw whatever the master wishes and write anything the master wants so his precious hands don't need to do the work. I can generate my own lead and eraser at the cost of a small amount of my CE. I also care for the master greatly and hope he knows such.
Notebook – A trusty sidekick of mine when it comes to helping the master translate his ideas to the page. Can generate more paper at the small cost of some of its CE. This spirit also cares very deeply for the master. For a small note: it was fine with me calling it a sidekick as long as I expressed how much it cares for the master.
Bat – A spirit that can increase the power of its impacts when striking with the proper end. It can't increase its impacts from places like the handle. The master also theorizes that by possibly striking projectile attacks, they could be knocked away.
Biker Gloves – A spirit that protects the master's hands from injury and disperses the force applied to them. Mainly used to disperse the recoil force of the bat's swings.
____
Seeing the clear sign of the pencil expressing itself I decided to not ignore it 'Thanks. I appreciate it. I care about y'all too.'
"About damn time. Finding most of these in trash bins was a pain, but I finally got a solid set of gear. And my cursed energy has substantially improved in its control over itself."
I raised my fist to the open sky, ready to slay the cursed spirit that had taken the life of this body's previous owner.
"It's time to begin the great grind for rolls."
I headed back to the orphanage to let Yuma know I was going to be gone for a bit. As I opened the door, I immediately saw her cleaning.
An excited tone filled my voice. "Hey, I'm gonna leave to play. I'll be back in a bit."
She looked up at me and gave me a gentle smile. "Sure, go ahead. Just don't go playing in the forest like last time. I don't wanna feel that scared for you ever again. That probably took a year off my life."
"Heh, don't worry. It won't happen again. I'll try not to worry you. See you later."
I ran right back outside, feeling a bit bad for lying to her.
'I am getting revenge for the previous Kaza, so morally I'm in the right anyway. Hehe.'
I ran until I entered the forest, trying to remember where the previous Kaza had encountered the cursed spirit that took his life.
Strolling through the foliage, I found that this place definitely had a dark aura about it.
A perfect place to test myself.
