The night was a split-screen of chaos. While Li Yan was being whisked away by Zhang Wei for a "high-stakes" poker night that ended up being a coding marathon in a luxury penthouse, Su Lan had different plans for my bachelorette party.
"No tiaras. No pink sashes," Su Lan declared, adjusting her glasses as we stood in the neon-drenched heart of the city's old district. Mei Ling and Jia Yi were behind her, holding encrypted GPS trackers. "Tonight, we play the ultimate version of Lock and Key. But the city is the board."
"Su Lan, it's 11:00 PM," I laughed, checking my reflection in a shop window. I was wearing a sleek leather jacket over my "100%" victory t-shirt. "What are we hunting for?"
"A ghost," Jia Yi said, her athlete's eyes scanning the rooftops. "Zhang Wei and Li Yan have the 'Key.' We are the 'Lock.' If they find us before midnight, the wedding goes off without a hitch. If we catch them... Li Yan has to hand over the admin rights to the Aether-Nexus main server for a month."
"He'd never agree to that!" I gasped.
"He already did," Mei Ling giggled. "He's so confident in his 'Logic' that he thinks he can track your heartbeat through the city's smart grid."
The Hunt Begins
The game was a nostalgic adrenaline shot. We sprinted through narrow alleyways, ducking into underground boba cafes and climbing fire escapes—moves we had perfected during our Shenghua Academy days.
"Movement at 3 o'clock!" Su Lan hissed, pulling us behind a massive digital billboard.
Down in the street, I saw a familiar silhouette. Li Yan was standing under a streetlight, looking like a tech-noir lead in a black trench coat. He wasn't looking at the ground; he was looking at his watch. Zhang Wei and Lin Chen were flanking him.
"He's using the city's CCTV," I whispered. "He's not searching; he's calculating."
"Then let's give him a 'Null' result," I smirked.
I signaled to Mei Ling. She pulled out a small device—a signal jammer Lin Chen had built back in 12th grade but never got to use.
Zap. Every screen in a one-block radius went black.
The Secret Rooftop
We scrambled up to the roof of the old Shenghua Cinema, the place where the Seven Stars had seen every blockbuster for six years. The roof was covered in rusted vents and old movie posters.
"They're close," Jia Yi whispered, her ears picking up the sound of footsteps on the metal stairs.
But as we turned to hide behind the water tank, we saw someone already sitting there. A boy in a faded school tracksuit, looking out at the city skyline.
My heart stopped. The "Seven Stars" froze.
"Hao Ran?" I whispered.
The former Karate Captain turned around. He looked older, stronger, and his eyes were filled with a quiet peace. He wasn't at the national camp; he was back in the city.
"I heard the '100% Student' was having a party," Hao Ran smiled, standing up. "I couldn't let the 'Seven Stars' have a reunion without the one variable that kept you all on your toes."
"You... you came back for the wedding?" I asked.
"I came back to give you this," he said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out an old, worn-out Lock. It was the one we used for our school lockers in 2018. "I found it in the gym debris during the renovation. It has your initials on it, Xing."
The "Lock" Meets the "Key"
Before I could respond, the rooftop door burst open. Li Yan charged through, breathing hard, his hair messy from the chase. He stopped dead when he saw Hao Ran.
The "November Guardians"—Wei, Mei Ling, and Jia Yi—all stepped onto the roof, forming a circle. The August Trio and the December Star were all present.
"Li Yan," Hao Ran said, tossing the old lock to him.
Li Yan caught it with one hand. He looked at the lock, then at the peridot ring on my finger.
"You found us," I said, stepping toward him.
"No," Li Yan murmured, his eyes fixed on me. "I didn't find you. I followed the logic of my own heart. It always leads back to this rooftop."
He walked up to me, ignoring the cold wind and the city noise. He took the old lock from his hand and pulled out a small, silver Key from his own pocket—the one he'd kept since the day he reduced his score.
He slid the key into the lock. Click. "The system is finally closed," Li Yan whispered, leaning his forehead against mine.
Hao Ran stood back, a genuine smile on his face. He walked over to Zhang Wei and gave him a brotherly shoulder-bump. The rivalry was dead. The "Seven Stars" were now Eight.
"Alright, enough sentimentality!" Su Lan shouted, checking her watch. "It's 12:01 AM. We caught you, Li Yan! Hand over the admin rights!"
Li Yan groaned, but he didn't pull away from me. "I'll give you a guest login, Lan. Don't push your luck."
"100% or nothing!" Su Lan laughed, and the rooftop erupted in the same chaotic, beautiful laughter that had echoed through the halls of Shenghua for a decade.
