Chapter 29 - The Silence

The next day—

Felt empty.

Not quiet.

Not peaceful.

Just—

Empty.

Anaya didn't cry loudly.

Didn't break down in front of anyone.

She just—

Stopped.

Talking less.

Smiling less.

Looking less.

Especially—

At him.

Because every time her mind drifted—

It went back.

To that moment.

That one second.

That one mistake.

"…he didn't stop."

The thought repeated.

Again.

Again.

Again.

"…then what was with me?"

Her fingers tightened around her pen.

"…was that acting too?"

That question—

Hurt more than anything else.

Because now—

Everything felt uncertain.

Their walks.

Their smiles.

Their names.

"Ansh…"

She closed her eyes tightly.

No.

Not anymore.

At school—

She avoided him completely.

No eye contact.

No pause.

No reaction.

"…Ana—"

Nothing.

"…Anaya."

Still nothing.

Like he didn't exist.

And that—

That was worse than anger.

Because anger still meant something.

This?

This was absence.

Reyansh couldn't take it.

Not this.

"Just listen to me once," he said, catching her wrist lightly.

She stopped.

Slowly looked at his hand.

Then at him.

"…leave it."

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

"It wasn't what you think—"

"I said leave it."

A pause.

"…please."

That word—

Soft.

But distant.

Like she wasn't asking.

She was ending it.

He let go.

Because for the first time—

He felt it.

He might actually lose her.

Meanwhile—

Naira couldn't breathe properly.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Because guilt—

Doesn't stay quiet.

It grows.

"…I need to tell her," she whispered to herself.

But fear—

Stopped her.

Because what if—

It made things worse?

What if—

She lost both of them?

But then—

She remembered Anaya's face.

That moment.

Those eyes.

And she knew—

It was already worse.

That evening—

Reyansh stood outside Anaya's house.

For the first time—

Not as someone confident.

Not as someone sure.

But as someone—

Desperate.

He texted.

Called.

Waited.

No response.

"…Ana…"

He whispered.

But the name—

Didn't belong to him anymore.

Inside—

Anaya sat on her bed.

Phone beside her.

Screen lighting up.

Again.

And again.

She didn't pick it up.

Didn't read it.

Because she knew—

If she did—

She would break.

"…I was enough for him, right?"

A tear slipped.

"…or was I just… there?"

Her chest tightened.

Because now—

Even her own memories—

Felt unreliable.

And that—

Was the worst part.

Back outside—

Reyansh finally stepped back.

Because no matter how much he tried—

She wasn't letting him in.

And somewhere—

He understood why.

"…I should've stopped it."

Too late.

And across all of this—

One truth stayed.

Unspoken.

Unheard.

And dangerously close—

To changing everything.

***

The school was almost empty.

Farewell preparations had ended.

Voices had faded.

Corridors—

Silent.

Too silent.

Inside one of the classrooms—

Reyansh stood near the window.

Still.

Broken.

"…I didn't stop."

The words left his lips again.

Like punishment.

The door creaked softly.

He didn't turn.

"…Reyansh."

Naira.

He closed his eyes briefly.

"…what is it?"

She stepped inside.

Hesitant.

Shaking.

"…I need to tell you something."

Silence.

"What happened yesterday—"

"It shouldn't have happened."

His voice was flat.

She flinched.

"…I know."

A pause.

"…I'm sorry."

Her voice cracked.

"I didn't mean to—"

"Then why did you?"

Tears filled her eyes instantly.

"…I don't know…"

Her hands trembled.

"…I thought I could control it."

"…control what?"

A breath.

A breaking one.

"…my feelings."

Silence filled the classroom.

Heavy.

"I didn't plan it… I swear… but every time we practiced… every time I stood there with you—"

Her voice shook violently.

"…it stopped feeling like a play."

Reyansh's jaw tightened.

Because now—

Everything made sense.

And yet—

Nothing was okay.

"…you should've stopped."

"I know!"

She cried.

"I know, Reyansh… I know…"

"…I never wanted to hurt her."

That word—

Hung between them.

"…you already did."

Silence.

Broken.

"…I'll tell her."

She wiped her tears.

Trying to steady herself.

"I'll explain everything. She deserves to know."

A pause.

"…what if she doesn't listen?"

Fear.

Real.

Reyansh didn't answer.

Because he didn't know.

"…I don't care."

She whispered.

"I'll still tell her."

And in that moment—

Overwhelmed—

She stepped forward.

And hugged him.

Tightly.

"…I'm really sorry."

Reyansh froze for a second—

Then immediately—

Pulled back.

"…don't."

His voice was distant.

Not harsh.

Just—

Occupied.

And then—

It happened.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

Footsteps.

Running.

Echoing through the empty corridor.

Sharp.

Restless.

Something about that sound—

Didn't sit right.

Reyansh's head snapped toward the door.

"…did you hear that?"

Naira frowned slightly.

"…what?"

But he didn't wait.

He was already moving.

Out of the classroom.

Into the corridor.

And there—

At the far end—

He saw her.

Anaya.

Running.

Her steps uneven.

Her hands—

Wiping her face.

Tears.

It hit him instantly.

Hard.

"…Ana—"

His voice echoed.

But she didn't stop.

Didn't turn.

Because she couldn't.

Because if she did—

She would break completely.

And he knew.

He knew.

She had seen.

Everything.

"…no."

The word left his lips.

Barely a whisper.

And in that moment—

Every piece connected.

The stage.

The silence.

The distance.

And now—

This.

"…I messed up."

Not just a mistake anymore.

Something bigger.

Something deeper.

Because now—

It wasn't just about what happened.

It was about what she believed happened.

And that—

Was far more dangerous.

Behind him—

Naira stood frozen at the classroom door.

Watching.

Understanding.

Because she didn't need to ask.

She knew.

"…she saw."

And for the first time—

Fear truly settled in.

Because now—

Fixing this—

Wouldn't be easy.

Not at all.
