Lucien watched Mark's retreating figure, suddenly feeling a faint pang of sympathy. Mark was the type of person who possessed genuine ability, yet he was too timid, far too fearful, to the point where for several months he had only known how to bury his head in his notes without ever daring to speak up and demand fairness. Had Lucien not appeared, perhaps Mark would have continued to be oppressed by Ethan for a few more years, right up until the moment he was utterly exhausted and forced to leave the company entirely.
However, the young man was also quite intelligent; observing the neat and tidy way Mark extricated himself from every problem was enough to understand that much. It was simply a pity that such petty cleverness did not know how to save itself.
