Lucas Lockwood's mother stood at the bend in the staircase. Her makeup was exquisite and she was impeccably dressed, but her eyes held a deep-seated weariness and a hint of well-hidden anxiety.
She looked at Josie Quinn, her gaze shifting to Jude Sheffield behind her with a clear note of caution.
Josie Quinn stopped and turned to face Mrs. Hawthorne. There was no trace of fear in her clear eyes, only a calm detachment.
She murmured to Jude Sheffield, "Jules, go wait for me downstairs for a minute."
Jude Sheffield frowned, his gaze sweeping over Mrs. Hawthorne with a scrutinizing, warning glint. He then nodded reluctantly and slowly descended the stairs. He didn't go far, stopping at the bottom to ensure he could rush back up at a moment's notice.
Mrs. Hawthorne watched Jude Sheffield's retreating figure and let out a small sigh of relief.
