"Then it's settled. I'll come pick you up in a couple of days."
He didn't stay long, so Josie guessed he had squeezed this visit into a busy schedule.
Josie walked him to the door, intending to watch him leave, but Julian Ford suddenly stopped at the threshold.
"Cece, the conditions here are harsh. Are you sure you won't come with me?"
"Yeah. In the apocalypse, these conditions are actually pretty good. Julian, don't worry about me."
After she said that, she thought Julian would leave.
But he suddenly took two steps forward and, to Josie's surprise, used his fingertips to brush aside a stray lock of her hair.
For a split second, behind his thin lenses, a glint of sheer aggression seemed to flash in his eyes.
Before Josie could get a closer look, he had already pulled his hand back with a smile. "You had something in your hair."
Josie raised a hand to touch her hair.
Julian Ford watched her, a smile spreading across his lips. "Cece, I'm leaving. See you another day."
