Chapter 16 - THE WARNING LINE

Alina didn't move for a long time.

The phone still rested in her palm, screen dimmed now, but the message was still there like it had burned itself into her vision.

Stop digging.

Simple. Clean. Commanding.

Her thumb slowly brushed over the screen, not replying, not deleting it either.

Just… acknowledging it.

Her breathing steadied, but something inside her had already shifted.

Not fear.

Awareness.

"So you're watching me now…" she murmured under her breath.

A faint, almost unreadable smile touched her lips but it didn't reach her eyes.

She stood up abruptly and walked to the window. Outside, the morning was loud with normal life vendors, cars, distant voices. A world that had no idea she was now standing inside something much quieter… and far more dangerous.

Behind her, the laptop was still open.

His fragment of identity still glowing on the screen like a door that had been cracked open just enough to tempt her.

Alina turned back.

Slowly.

And instead of stepping away from it… She stepped closer.

"No," she said softly. "I'm not stopping."

She reopened her notes. Began structuring everything again. Names, patterns, timestamps, locations. She drew lines between fragments like she was building a map of someone's invisible life.

But then

Her phone buzzed again.

This time, no message.

A call.

Unknown number.

Her hand hesitated only for a second before she picked up.

For a brief moment, there was nothing on the line. Just silence. Heavy. Controlled.

Then

A voice.

Low.

Calm.

Unmistakably composed.

"Alina."

Her entire body went still.

Not because she was scared…

But because hearing her name in that voice felt too personal.

Too familiar.

She didn't respond immediately.

And the voice continued, even softer now.

"You were told to stop."

Her grip tightened slightly on the phone.

"Who is this?" she asked, even though her heartbeat already had an answer forming.

A pause.

Then, almost like a warning wrapped in silk "You already know." Silence again.

But this time, it wasn't empty.

It was filled.

With presence.

With him.

Alina closed her eyes briefly, inhaling slowly.

When she opened them, her voice was steadier than she expected.

"Lucien…"

A faint exhale came through the line.

Not denial.

Not confirmation.

Something in between.

"You shouldn't have looked for me," he said finally.

Alina turned away from the window, walking back into the room.

Her tone sharpened slightly.

"And you shouldn't have left traces if you didn't want to be found." That line landed differently.

A pause followed.

Longer this time.

When he spoke again, his voice had changedjust slightly.

Quieter.

"Now you've stepped into something you don't understand." Alina's eyes flicked to the screen again.

The company. The layers. The secrecy.

"I understand enough," she replied.

A faint sound came through the line almost like a breath of amusement.

"No," he said gently. "You don't."

Then, softer

"But you will."

And before she could respond The call ended.

The room went silent.

Alina stood there, phone still pressed to her ear long after the line went dead.

Slowly, she lowered it.

Her eyes stayed fixed on the laptop screen.

But now…

Everything had changed again.

Because this wasn't just curiosity anymore.

And it wasn't just pursuit.

It was mutual awareness.

He wasn't just hidden.

He was watching back.
