Chapter 103 - The Life He Buried

Julian stared at the photograph.

Silas.

Across from him.

Not beside him.

Not protecting him.

Opposing him.

His fingers tightened around the edge of the paper.

"What happened here?"

The man in the doorway glanced toward the stairs.

"We don't have time."

Julian didn't move.

"You said this was my life."

"It was."

"Then tell me what I was doing."

Footsteps sounded below.

Closer.

The man looked at him.

"You were looking for someone."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

Julian's expression hardened.

"Everyone seems to know something except me."

The man walked toward the wall.

He pulled one of the files from a shelf.

"That's because you made sure nobody could tell you."

He placed it in Julian's hands.

Julian opened it.

The first page contained his name.

Not Locke.

JULIAN ARDENT.

Below it was another name.

LOCKE.

Then a list of dates.

Locations.

Names.

Several pages had been blacked out.

Julian turned one.

A photograph fell onto the floor.

He picked it up.

It showed him standing in front of a building.

His expression was different.

Cold.

Focused.

Not frightened.

Not confused.

Certain.

Julian stared at his own face.

"I don't recognize myself."

"You weren't supposed to."

The footsteps reached the first floor.

The man looked toward the door.

"We have to go."

Julian closed the file.

"No."

The man frowned.

"What?"

"I want to know what happened here."

"You'll have time later."

"If I leave now, they'll take this."

The man looked at him.

"You're learning."

Julian paused.

"What?"

"You're starting to think like him."

The words unsettled him.

"Like Locke?"

The man didn't answer.

Instead, he walked toward the shelves.

"Take only what you can carry."

Julian looked around the room.

There were dozens of files.

Hundreds of photographs.

A lifetime reduced to paper.

He chose three.

The photograph of Silas.

The file with his name.

And a thin folder marked with a single letter.

A.

The man's expression changed when he saw it.

"Put that back."

Julian held it tighter.

"No."

"That isn't yours."

Julian looked at him.

"My name is on it."

The man said nothing.

Julian opened the folder.

There was only one page inside.

A photograph.

A handwritten sentence.

And a date.

Julian read the sentence.

His stomach dropped.

If I forget, A must never find me.

He looked up.

"What does this mean?"

The man was silent.

"Who is A?"

"I told you."

"No."

Julian stepped closer.

"You haven't told me anything."

The man looked at the folder.

Then at Julian.

"You really don't remember."

"No."

"Then maybe that's a good thing."

Julian's patience broke.

"Stop saying that."

He threw the folder onto the table.

"I've spent months being told I'm better off not knowing who I am. Silas says it. A says it. Now you say it."

The man stared at him.

Julian continued.

"I don't want protection anymore."

Silence.

"I want the truth."

The man looked almost impressed.

Then the door downstairs slammed.

"They're here."

Julian turned.

"How many?"

"Three."

"Armed?"

"Yes."

Julian's body reacted before his mind did.

He looked toward the window.

Second floor.

Fire escape.

He knew the distance.

He knew the angle.

He knew exactly how long it would take to reach the alley.

The thought arrived naturally.

Too naturally.

Julian froze.

The man noticed.

"What?"

Julian looked at the window.

"I know how to get out."

The man stared at him.

"You shouldn't."

Julian looked back.

"Why?"

"Because that was Locke's escape route."

Julian's eyes widened.

He didn't hesitate.

He opened the window.

The man followed.

"Wait."

Julian climbed onto the fire escape.

The moment his feet touched the metal stairs, something inside him shifted.

His body remembered.

Where to place his weight.

Which step creaked.

Which railing was loose.

How to move without making noise.

He descended quickly.

The man followed behind him.

They reached the alley.

Julian looked toward the street.

Two men came around the corner.

He grabbed the man's arm.

"This way."

They ran.

They turned into another street.

Then another.

Julian didn't know where he was going.

But somehow—

he did.

He led them through narrow alleys and crowded streets until the sounds behind them disappeared.

Finally, they stopped.

Julian leaned against a wall.

His breathing was heavy.

The man stared at him.

"You knew exactly where to go."

Julian looked at his hands.

"I don't know how."

"You don't need to."

Julian looked up.

The man was watching him differently now.

Not like a confused stranger.

Like someone he had seen before.

"What?"

The man shook his head.

"Nothing."

"No."

Julian pushed away from the wall.

"You know me."

The man didn't answer.

"You knew Locke."

"Yes."

"You knew Julian."

A pause.

"Yes."

Julian stared at him.

"And you knew I'd erase myself."

The man looked away.

"Yes."

Julian's voice became quieter.

"Did I trust you?"

The man's expression changed.

"No."

Julian frowned.

"Then why are you helping me?"

The man looked directly at him.

"Because Locke trusted me."

Julian went still.

The contradiction hung between them.

"You just said I didn't."

"I said Julian didn't."

Julian understood.

The man continued.

"Locke and Julian were not the same."

Julian looked down.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

"Because you need to understand it."

"I thought Locke was me."

"He was."

Julian looked up.

"But not completely."

The man stepped closer.

"Locke was what you became."

Julian's pulse quickened.

"Because of what?"

The man hesitated.

"Because someone taught you how to survive."

"Who?"

The man didn't answer.

Julian almost laughed.

Of course.

Another secret.

Another wall.

Then the man said:

"Come with me."

"Where?"

"Somewhere Silas can't reach you."

Julian stared at him.

"And you expect me to trust you?"

"No."

The man turned.

"I expect you to make your own decision."

Julian looked back toward the street.

He could return to Silas.

He could return to the house.

He could pretend none of this had happened.

Or he could follow a stranger into a life he had deliberately erased.

His phone vibrated.

One message.

Silas.

Come home.

Julian stared at it.

Then another appeared.

Please.

Julian's expression softened for half a second.

Then hardened again.

He switched the phone off.

The man watched him.

"You've decided?"

Julian slipped the three files beneath his jacket.

"Yes."

They walked.

Behind them, the city continued moving as if nothing had happened.

But Julian knew better now.

There was another world beneath the one he'd known.

A world where people recognized Locke.

A world where his past still had enemies.

A world where Silas wasn't the only person who had been protecting secrets.

And somewhere in that world was A.

The person Julian had warned himself never to let find him.

He didn't know who A was.

Not yet.

But for the first time—

Julian wasn't afraid of finding out.

He was afraid of what A would remember about him.
