Chapter 101 - Beyond the Door

Julian stepped outside.

For a moment, he simply stood there.

The air felt different.

Cooler.

Wider.

He hadn't realized how much the house had become a world of its own until he was standing beyond its gates.

Cars moved along the street.

People walked past without looking at him.

A woman laughed into her phone.

Someone hurried across the road carrying a paper bag.

Normal.

Almost painfully normal.

Julian watched them.

For weeks, every movement around him had been monitored. Every conversation measured. Every door had carried a meaning.

Now there were no walls telling him where to look.

No voice telling him where to go.

No Silas beside him.

Julian took another step.

His phone vibrated.

He stopped.

One message.

Unknown number.

You finally left.

Julian stared at the screen.

He didn't reply.

Another message appeared.

Don't go home.

His expression tightened.

A third message.

They know you're outside.

Julian looked up.

The street hadn't changed.

People were still moving.

Cars still passed.

But suddenly, every face seemed possible.

He put the phone away.

A taxi slowed near the curb.

The driver lowered the window.

"Where to?"

Julian hesitated.

He almost said the address of the house.

Instead, he gave another.

"The eastern district."

The Marlowe.

The taxi pulled away.

Julian leaned back.

For the first time, he wasn't following Silas's instructions.

He wasn't following A's warnings either.

He was making his own decision.

The city passed outside the window.

Buildings became unfamiliar.

The streets grew quieter.

Then Julian noticed something.

A black car had been behind them for three turns.

He looked away.

A few seconds later, he checked again.

Still there.

His pulse remained steady.

The old Julian would have known what to do.

Locke probably would have known too.

But Julian wasn't Locke.

Not completely.

He looked at the driver.

"Take the next left."

The driver frowned.

"That isn't the way."

"I know."

The taxi turned.

The black car continued straight.

Julian watched it disappear.

He exhaled.

Maybe they weren't following him.

Maybe they were.

Either way, he had learned something.

Someone was watching.

The taxi stopped several minutes later.

Julian paid and stepped onto the pavement.

The Marlowe was three streets away.

He didn't go there immediately.

Instead, he entered a small café.

He chose a seat near the window.

Visibility.

Exit behind him.

Habit.

He noticed the thought.

Then another.

That's not Julian.

Julian frowned.

The distinction was becoming harder to understand.

He ordered coffee.

While waiting, he opened his phone.

The conversation with A remained untouched.

He typed.

Who are they?

He stared at the message.

Then sent it.

The response came almost immediately.

You shouldn't be asking that yet.

Julian's eyes narrowed.

He typed again.

You knew I would leave the house.

Three dots appeared.

Disappeared.

Returned.

Then:

I knew you would eventually remember enough to try.

Julian leaned back.

Who are they?

This time, there was no immediate answer.

A minute passed.

Then two.

Finally:

People who knew Locke before Julian existed.

Julian stopped breathing.

His fingers tightened around the phone.

Another message arrived.

And if they know you're alive, the Marlowe won't be your biggest problem.

Julian stared at the words.

Locke before Julian existed.

That sentence opened something he hadn't considered.

He had always thought Locke was another identity.

Another version of himself.

But what if Locke's story had begun before Julian?

What if the name belonged to something larger?

Julian looked toward the café window.

Across the street stood a man in a dark coat.

He wasn't looking at Julian.

At least not directly.

Julian watched him through the reflection.

The man lifted his phone.

Then walked away.

Julian's phone vibrated again.

A final message.

Leave the café. Now.

Julian stood.

He didn't panic.

He didn't run.

He walked calmly toward the back exit.

The moment he stepped outside, he heard footsteps behind him.

One.

Two.

Three.

He kept walking.

Then a voice spoke.

"Locke."

Julian stopped.

Everything inside him went still.

Slowly, he turned.

A man stood several feet away.

Older.

Calm.

Unfamiliar.

But the way he looked at Julian wasn't unfamiliar.

It was recognition.

Not curiosity.

Not suspicion.

Recognition.

The man smiled faintly.

"So they really did bring you back."

Julian stared at him.

"Who are you?"

The man's smile disappeared.

"You don't remember."

"No."

"Good."

Julian's eyes narrowed.

"Why?"

The man stepped closer.

"Because the last time you remembered who you were…"

He paused.

"…people disappeared."

Julian's blood ran cold.

The man turned away.

"Don't come to the Marlowe."

Julian watched him walk off.

His phone vibrated.

Another message from A.

Now you understand why I told you not to trust anyone.

Julian looked down at the screen.

Then toward the direction the stranger had disappeared.

The outside world had been waiting for him.

And apparently—

it already knew his name.
