Chapter 79 - Shared Signal

The room was too open.

Too visible.

Locke noticed that first.

Not the people.

Not the voices.

The space.

Wide. Structured. Monitored.

Multiple terminals lined the walls, soft lights blinking in controlled rhythms. Low conversations moved like background noise—contained, professional, unimportant.

Observers.

Technicians.

Witnesses.

Locke stepped in without hesitation.

Because hesitation would be seen.

And right now—

Nothing could be seen.

"Relax," Silas said lightly behind him.

Locke didn't turn.

"I am."

A lie.

Clean. Immediate.

But not effortless.

Silas smiled faintly as he walked past him, taking the lead into the center of the room like he owned it.

Because he did.

"Routine check," Silas announced casually to no one in particular.

A few heads lifted.

Acknowledged.

Then lowered again.

But not completely.

Attention lingered.

It always did around Silas.

And now—

Around Locke too.

Silas stopped near one of the central stations and turned slightly.

"Come here."

Not loud.

Not commanding.

But absolute.

Locke moved.

Each step measured.

Each movement deliberate.

He could feel it again—

That presence.

Not pushing.

Not interrupting.

Just… there.

Close.

Watching through the same eyes.

"Stand," Silas said.

Locke stopped exactly where indicated.

Still.

Composed.

Contained.

Silas circled him once.

Slow.

Observing.

Evaluating.

Like he was looking for something only he could see.

Or feel.

"Let's keep this simple," Silas said.

His voice was softer now.

But sharper.

Targeted.

"Answer clearly."

Locke didn't respond.

Didn't need to.

Silas stepped into his line of sight.

Close enough to hold his gaze directly.

And then—

He asked.

"Tell me what you remember."

The question landed calmly.

But it wasn't simple.

It never was.

Locke opened his mouth.

Prepared.

Controlled.

"I don't—"

"I remember."

The words overlapped.

Not loud.

Not separate.

But wrong.

The sentence twisted in the air.

"I don't remember."

But it didn't sound right.

The timing was off.

The tone—

Split.

Like two intentions collided mid-breath.

Locke felt it immediately.

That misalignment.

That fracture in delivery.

His jaw tightened.

Silas didn't move.

Didn't blink.

Didn't react—

But his eyes sharpened.

There it is.

"Say that again," Silas said quietly.

Locke's chest rose slowly.

Controlled.

Measured.

"I don't remember."

Clean.

This time.

Perfect.

But the damage—

Already done.

Silas took a small step closer.

"You hesitated."

"I didn't."

Too fast.

Too defensive.

Julian stirred.

Not violently.

Not aggressively.

But distinctly.

"You did."

The voice slipped again.

Soft.

Barely there.

But layered.

Locke's breath hitched—

Just slightly.

One of the technicians glanced up.

Only for a second.

Then back down.

But it was enough.

Someone noticed.

Silas's smile didn't show on his lips.

But it existed.

In his eyes.

"You're correcting yourself mid-sentence," he said.

"Is that new?"

Locke's hands stayed at his sides.

Still.

Too still.

"No."

Julian moved again.

Closer.

Not separate.

Aligned.

"You're lying."

The word didn't come out fully.

But it pressed against Locke's throat.

Distorting the silence.

Locke swallowed hard.

Forced it down.

Forced everything down.

Silas tilted his head slightly.

"Interesting."

He stepped closer.

Now fully within Locke's space.

Close enough that no one else could hear clearly.

But close enough to push.

To test.

To break.

"Who was that?" Silas asked softly.

Locke's gaze hardened.

"You're imagining things."

Wrong answer.

Silas's eyes flickered with something darker.

More focused.

More certain.

"Am I?"

A pause.

Then—

He leaned in slightly.

Just enough.

And whispered—

"I wasn't talking to you."

Locke froze.

Not visibly.

But completely.

Inside—

Everything stopped.

Julian didn't speak.

Didn't move.

But his presence—

Sharp.

Alert.

Awake.

Silas pulled back slowly.

Watching.

Waiting.

Counting the seconds.

Locke forced himself to move.

To breathe.

To exist normally again.

"You're testing nothing," Locke said.

But his voice—

Wasn't as stable as before.

Silas smiled.

There it is.

"I'm testing everything."

Another pause.

Longer this time.

He turned slightly—

Just enough for others to see his profile.

To normalize the interaction again.

To make it look like nothing.

But his voice—

Still low.

Still precise.

Still meant only for Locke.

"Let's try something else."

Locke didn't respond.

Didn't resist.

Because resistance—

Would show.

Silas's gaze sharpened again.

"Say your name."

Simple.

Direct.

Harmless.

Locke answered instantly.

"Locke."

But—

"I'm not—"

The overlap hit harder this time.

Sharper.

More distinct.

The word cut through the first.

Not fully separate.

But undeniable.

Locke felt it.

That split.

That fracture in identity itself.

His chest tightened.

His fingers twitched.

Not visibly enough.

But enough.

A second technician looked up.

Frowning slightly.

Silas saw it.

Of course he did.

And now—

He didn't hide the smile.

Slow.

Satisfied.

Dangerous.

"Again," Silas said softly.

Locke didn't want to.

For the first time—

There was resistance.

Not from Julian.

From him.

Because he knew.

This wasn't testing anymore.

This was exposure.

"Say it," Silas repeated.

Quiet.

Firm.

Unavoidable.

Locke inhaled slowly.

Then—

"Locke."

Silence.

No overlap.

No distortion.

Clean.

Perfect.

Controlled.

But too controlled.

Silas exhaled softly.

Almost amused.

"You're trying harder now."

Locke didn't respond.

Couldn't.

Because if he spoke again—

It might happen again.

And this time—

It wouldn't be small.

Silas stepped back.

Just slightly.

Creating space.

But not releasing pressure.

"You should be careful," he said.

Louder now.

For the room.

For the observers.

"For someone so stable… you're starting to sound uncertain."

A few quiet glances.

Nothing direct.

Nothing obvious.

But enough.

Locke felt it.

That shift.

That attention.

That awareness spreading just slightly wider than before.

And for the first time—

This wasn't contained.

This wasn't hidden.

This wasn't safe.

Silas turned fully now.

Walking away like the interaction meant nothing.

Like it was routine.

Normal.

Unimportant.

But as he passed Locke—

He spoke one last time.

Quiet.

Sharp.

Final.

"He's getting louder."

Locke didn't move.

Didn't react.

Didn't respond.

But inside—

Something cracked.

Because Julian didn't deny it.
