Chapter 39 - Early reaction

Once, to test a frog's ability to adapt its body to changing conditions,

a group of scientists placed the frog inside a glass jar and filled it with water up to half its height.

The jar was then gradually heated.

To ensure that the frog could jump out once the heat became unbearable,

the top of the jar was left open.

The frog sensed the rising heat in its body and began expending its energy to adapt itself to the external temperature.

Sweat began to bead on the frog's body as it channeled its energy into this process of adaptation. Eventually,

a moment arrived when the frog's capacity to withstand the heat began to wane;

it attempted to jump out of the jar, but instead of clearing the rim,

it merely fell back into the water.

Despite repeated attempts,

the frog could not escape,

for it had already squandered the strength required to jump out in its earlier struggle against the heat.

Thus,

had the frog decided to jump at the right moment, its life might have been saved.
