Chapter 29 - Don't be Idle

If you wish to achieve success in life, do not let laziness come anywhere near you.

A lazy person can be likened to a pond; confined within boundaries, its water becomes stagnant and covered in algae.

In contrast, the water of a continuously flowing river always remains pure.

If you spend your entire day lying around at home, your limbs will stiffen up, and you will face difficulty in moving about.

It is not just humans; even the gears of a machine will cease to function if they are not put to use.

This is a tale from long ago.

In a certain land, there lived an old man.

He was an extremely hardworking individual who earned his livelihood by toiling in the fields.

He had three sons, all of whom were incredibly lazy. The old man and his wife were constantly distressed by their sons' idleness.

Both parents tried their best to reason with the boys, but the three of them simply would not give up their lazy ways.

One day, the old farmer passed away. The old woman urged her sons to go to the fields, but they refused to go.

As long as there was grain in the house, the old woman cooked for them and fed them; eventually, however, the day came when the entire stock of grain ran out.

When not a single grain remained in the house, the old woman told her sons to go out and find work, but even then, they did not budge.

One morning, the old woman woke up and began to weep.

Seeing their mother in tears, the sons asked her what was wrong. The mother replied, "Your father appeared to me in a dream last night. He told me that if you were to go to the fields and unearth the treasure buried there, our poverty would be alleviated."

"Then what is there to cry about?" the sons asked.

The old woman replied, "I am weeping because I am wondering: who will now go to the fields, dig up the ground, and retrieve that treasure? I cannot ask a stranger to do it, and that is why I am crying."

Upon hearing the old woman's words, the three sons went to the fields and began to dig the earth. Observing that all three sons were digging in the exact same spot, the old woman said, "The treasure could be anywhere in the field; therefore, you must dig up the entire field thoroughly."

After the entire field had been dug up and no treasure was found, the three sons became frustrated. The old woman replied, "Very well; the next time your father appears to me in a dream, I will complain to him about this. Now that the field has already been dug, why not sow some grain in it?"

The sons sowed the grain. Within just a few days, the crops in the field began to sway in the breeze. When the time came to harvest the crops, the old woman began to weep once again. The sons asked, "What is the matter now?"

"Your father appeared to me in a dream," she said. "He told me to have you harvest the crops, take them to the market to sell, and only then would he reveal the location of the treasure."

Driven by their greed for the treasure, the sons harvested the crops and went to the market to sell them.

When they received the money from selling the harvest, all three sons were overjoyed.

From that day forward, the three of them cast aside their laziness and began working diligently in the fields.

If you wish to become wealthy or achieve success in your life, you must steer clear of laziness.

Laziness is poverty; laziness is failure; laziness is futility; laziness is the enemy of prosperity. Drive away laziness and become a successful individual.

To become successful, one must abandon laziness. Laziness squanders the most productive and creative moments of life.
