Alice's hurt and troubled expression pained the Old Madam. She reached out to pat Alice's shoulder comfortingly. "I haven't acknowledged that girl yet. In my heart, you're the best choice for my granddaughter-in-law."
"Grandma, but..." Alice suppressed her inner delight. "Damian is very fond of that girl. Perhaps it's best if I just give up."
As she spoke, a watery mist welled up in her eyes. Tears shimmered for a moment before slowly trickling down her cheeks.
"Don't cry. Crying will spoil your pretty face."
This only made the Old Madam dislike the unseen Seraphina Ashworth even more. Inwardly, she couldn't help but blame her grandson. 'Alice is so kind and understanding. Why doesn't he like her?'
"Don't you worry. As long as I don't approve, that girl will never be able to marry into the Lantister family."
Alice gently wiped away a tear, the corners of her eyes curving up. "Thank you, Grandma."
