Chapter 62 - Chapter 62: The Reyes Pressure

U.S. Embassy, Caracas — Five Days Post-Camp Exposure

The Dead Drop note appeared in my desk drawer sometime before I arrived at 0700.

Not from the relay network — the paper was different, the handwriting precise in a way that suggested European schooling. Nadia's communication channel, bypassing the electronic infrastructure entirely.

ACCEPTED. TERMS TO FOLLOW.

I read it twice, then folded it into my pocket. The negotiation had worked. Whatever terms she proposed, the fundamental dynamic had shifted.

Partnership instead of pursuit. Collaboration instead of containment.

For now.

The intelligence wing's monitors showed the political cascade Ryan had predicted.

The prison camp footage was everywhere — international news networks, social media platforms, diplomatic channels. Combined with Senator Moreno's ongoing public campaign from his Washington hospital bed, the pressure on Reyes had become terminal.

"Three cabinet ministers resigned overnight," Ryan said, updating the assessment board. "The military's joint chiefs issued a statement calling for 'peaceful transition of power.' That's Venezuelan military code for 'we're not going to die defending this regime.'"

November was coordinating with his local network. "Bonalde's campaign is surging. International observers are already positioning for elections that haven't been scheduled yet."

The show's timeline took weeks to reach this point. Here, it's happening in days.

Moreno's survival accelerated everything. A living senator speaking from a hospital bed is more powerful than a dead senator becoming a martyr. The political pressure multiplied instead of dissipating.

I pulled up the threat assessment models I'd been building since the Venezuela briefing. The accelerated collapse was creating a power vacuum faster than any faction could fill it. Bonalde had international support but limited domestic infrastructure. Reyes's inner circle was fracturing. And somewhere in the chaos, the tantalum conspiracy was approaching its exposure point.

Harry Baumann entered the intelligence wing at 0930 with a tablet full of updated financial analysis.

---

"The shell company trail has narrowed." Harry pulled her data onto the main display. "Campaign donations flowing through Luxembourg and Panama, all originating from the same trust structure I identified last week. The recipient is a U.S. political figure — someone with significant influence over Venezuelan policy."

Senator Chapin. The name sat in my mind like a sealed file.

I could end this now. One word, and Harry's investigation jumps forward by weeks. One name, and the tantalum conspiracy reaches its conclusion.

But that name would raise questions I can't answer. How does a CIA analyst in economic analysis know the identity of a corrupt senator that BND financial forensics hasn't identified yet?

"What's your confidence level on the identification?" I asked instead.

"The financial fingerprint is solid. The specific recipient is still obscured behind beneficial ownership structures." Harry highlighted a cluster of transactions. "But the pattern is consistent with campaign finance corruption. Someone is being paid to protect Reyes."

I provided the analytical support any competent colleague would offer — cross-referencing shell company structures with public campaign finance records, correlating transaction timing with congressional voting patterns on Venezuelan sanctions.

Standard work. Nothing that revealed foreknowledge.

Harry noticed my attention on the financial charts. "You see something?"

I see an answer I can't give.

"Just tracing the pattern logic. Your methodology is solid."

She accepted the deflection with a nod and returned to her analysis. The tantalum trail continued its slow progression toward Senator Chapin — slower than it would be with meta-knowledge, but cleaner. More credible. Untraceable to anything except competent investigative work.

Ryan was cultivating Miguel Ubarri through a secure video-conference at 1400.

I observed from my workstation, the SDN painting Ubarri's threads across the encrypted feed. The image quality degraded the system's read, but enough came through to be useful.

Gold toward his family — strong, bright, the anchor that defined his decision space. Gray toward Reyes — fading, the institutional loyalty eroding under the weight of regime collapse. And a new pattern I hadn't catalogued before: an oscillating thread toward Ryan that shifted between gray and gold in irregular pulses.

Undecided. He's processing the defection decision in real time.

In the show, Ubarri eventually defected and provided intelligence that accelerated Reyes's fall. But that timeline was different. The accelerated collapse here might force his hand sooner — or might make him cling to the regime out of fear.

The thread oscillation continued throughout the call. Ryan was offering protection, extraction guarantees, political asylum. Ubarri was nodding, considering, not committing.

The call ended at 1447. Ryan leaned back in his chair.

"He's close," Ryan said. "But he's not there yet."

"His family is the key," I offered. "Everything in his decision space anchors to them."

Ryan looked at me with the particular attention of someone who'd noticed an unusually specific observation. "How do you know that?"

Because I watched his thread structure pulse gold every time family was mentioned.

"Behavioral analysis. The way he responds to different topics — his body language changes when family comes up. He's not protecting himself. He's protecting them."

Ryan accepted the explanation. The gold thread between us pulsed with the trust we'd built through shared operations. He didn't question my methodology because my conclusions had been reliable.

The gap between what I see and what I can explain. The constant translation between system perception and human credibility.

Nadia's terms arrived via another Dead Drop note, positioned in my quarters rather than my desk.

TERMS: 1. Joint access to all archive node data and photographs. 2. Analysis sessions in swept secure rooms only. 3. One question I want answered: How did you find the node? System guidance at Tier 1 does not include that capability.

I read the third term three times.

She noticed. Of course she noticed — she's spent six years studying system capabilities. The Dead Drop pull that led me to the archive, the code transmission through electronic relay, the guidance range that exceeded my tier classification.

Those are Tier 2 capabilities. And I'm Tier 1 at best.

She's asking how I have tools I shouldn't have.

The question had no safe answer. The truth — transmigration, meta-knowledge, a consciousness from a world where this was all fiction — was impossible. Any lie would be testable against her six years of system experience.

Partial truth. The only viable option.

I wrote my response on the same paper she'd used.

TERMS ACCEPTED. ANSWER TO QUESTION 3: I don't know. The system has treated me differently since activation. Irregulars are anomalies by definition — perhaps my anomaly includes capability gaps that don't follow standard tier progression.

It wasn't a lie. It wasn't the full truth. It was the best I could offer without exposing everything.

I left the note where Nadia would find it and waited for the analysis sessions to begin.
