Chapter 92 - Chapter 92: The 20-Minute Gamble — Renzo Uzumaki vs. The Jewel

Serie A Round 27.

Stadio Renzo Barbera, Palermo.

The Sicilian sun beat down on the Stadio Renzo Barbera as Fiorentina arrived seeking a historic eighth consecutive league victory. Having climbed to fourth in the standings, the "Viola" were finally breathing the rarefied air of the Champions League spots. But with Lazio trailing by a single point, the margin for error was non-existent.

However, the midweek Europa League war against Wolfsburg had left the squad battered. Facing a grueling schedule, Manager Vincenzo Montella made a decision that sent shockwaves through the traveling supporters: a total tactical overhaul.

When the starting XI was announced, the fans were in an uproar. Montella had benched five pillars of the team. Mario Gomez made way for the veteran Gilardino; the explosive Mohamed Salah was rested for the aging Joaquín; and defensive anchor Savic was replaced by Tomošić.

Most crucially, the midfield "engine" was gutted. Aquilani and the team's Japanese sensation—the man currently worth €40 million—Renzo Uzumaki, were both relegated to the bench.

Back in Japan, fans who had stayed up until the early hours to watch their national hero were stunned. The Japanese social media spheres lit up instantly:

[Wait, Renzo is on the bench? Is Montella throwing the game?]

[Rotating five starters at once is suicidal. Palermo isn't a top-tier giant, but at home, they are lethal!]

[Without Renzo's 'One-Touch' vision, this midfield looks like a retirement home. Let's see if the veterans can survive the first half!]

Palermo's manager, Beppe Iachini, couldn't believe his eyes. He had spent the week crafting a plan to stop Renzo's 360-degree passing lanes, only to find the Japanese "Ghost" sitting in a tracksuit.

"Forwards, press! Midfielders, squeeze!" Iachini roared. "Give the ball to Dybala! Let him dismantle them!"

Palermo's secret weapon was 21-year-old Paulo Dybala. In early 2015, Dybala was the "Jewel" of Serie A, a left-footed wizard dubbed the successor to Messi. While Renzo Uzumaki had been stealing the headlines lately, Dybala had been quietly amassing 9 goals and 7 assists. Today, he played with a point to prove.

In the 10th minute, Dybala slithered through the defense, firing a shot that whistled just wide. By the 22nd minute, he had Tomošić dancing in circles before threading a needle to Bastos, whose volley forced a miraculous save from Neto.

The pressure finally broke the Viola in the 32nd minute. A deflected cross fell into the box, and after a frantic scramble, Dybala pounced on the loose ball, burying it into the bottom corner.

1-0 Palermo. The stadium exploded. Without Renzo to dictate the tempo, Fiorentina looked like a body without a brain.

The difference in the midfield was night and day. David Pizarro, though a decorated veteran, lacked Renzo's "god-tier" verticality. Where Renzo would unleash a first-time through ball that split three defenders, Pizarro opted for safe, lateral passes.

Juan Cuadrado was the most frustrated man on the pitch. Without Renzo Uzumaki there to draw the "gravity" of the defense and find him in open space, Cuadrado was constantly double-teamed. Every time he looked back for a creative spark, the Japanese playmaker wasn't there.

"Renzo's importance is even more obvious when he's absent," noted the commentators. "Fiorentina has zero transition speed today."

By the 60th minute, Montella brought on Salah and Savic, but the score remained 1-0. The Sicilian crowd sensed an upset. Finally, in the 70th minute, the fourth official held up the board: Number 10, Renzo Uzumaki, was coming on.

Iachini, the Palermo manager, watched the substitution with a sneer.

"Only 20 minutes?" he muttered to his assistant. "Does Montella think this Japanese kid is a miracle worker? He's giving him 20 minutes to find a rhythm against my entire defense?"

He turned toward the pitch, shouting a challenge that would soon echo across Italy:

"If this kid can overturn this lead in just twenty minutes, I'll eat the very turf on this pitch!"

As Renzo Uzumaki stepped onto the grass, the atmosphere shifted. He didn't look like a substitute; he looked like a general returning to a lost battle. He adjusted his captain's-style focus, glanced at the clock, and met Dybala's gaze.

The message was silent: The Jewel has had his hour. Now, the Ghost is here.
