In the ruins of a subway station, the squad found her.
She couldn't have been more than nineteen. Her skin was translucent, her veins glowing with a terrifying silver light. She was surrounded by the corpses of a dozen "Order-Paladins"—the Consortium's local enforcers. She hadn't used a weapon. She had literally dissolved them.
"Stay back!" she shrieked, her voice sounding like two stones grinding together. "I'm... I'm broken! The Ranks... they disappeared! I can see the threads! I can see the hunger!"
Vance stepped forward, his heavy boots echoing in the tunnel. He didn't draw his weapon. He just stood there, a golden mountain of meat and iron.
"You aren't broken, kid," Vance said, his voice unusually soft. "You're just early."
"Who... who are you?" she gasped, her silver eyes flickering.
"We're the Void-Guard," Vance said, reaching out a massive hand. "And the man in the sky wants to have a word with you."
