ROOM 7

Chapter Fifty-Two: The Beginning

---

The morning after Lyra said I love you, the apartment was different.

Not in a way anyone could point to. The dishes were still in the sink. The coffee was still black. The couch was still covered in blankets. But something had shifted. The air was lighter. The walls seemed brighter. Even the city outside the window looked different.

Lyra woke before Alex. His arm was around her. His face was buried in her hair. His chest was warm against her back. She didn't move. She wanted to remember this. The weight of his arm. The sound of his breathing. The way his hand curled around her waist even in sleep. The way he held on like he was afraid she'd disappear.

She turned in his arms. Faced him. His eyes were still closed. His face was soft. She touched his cheek. His jaw. His lips.

He opened his eyes. Looked at her.

"Morning," he said. His voice was rough. Sleepy.

"Morning."

He pulled her closer. "What time is it?"

"Late."

He kissed her forehead. "We slept."

"We slept."

"All night."

"All night."

He looked at her. At her face. At the way the morning light caught her eyes. "You're still here."

She smiled. "I'm still here."

He kissed her. She kissed him back. The apartment was quiet. The sun was rising. The world was waiting.

---

Part One: The Coffee

They made coffee together.

He measured the grounds. She poured the water. He pressed the button. She waited. The machine hummed. The apartment filled with the smell of coffee and morning and something new.

He poured two cups. Black. No sugar. The way they both liked it.

He handed her one. Their fingers touched. Neither of them pulled away.

"Best friends," she said.

He smiled. "Best friends."

She hit his chest. "You're impossible."

He caught her hand. Kissed her knuckles. "You like it."

She didn't answer. She drank her coffee. He drank his. The kitchen was warm. The sun was bright. The city was loud.

"Alex."

He looked at her.

"What are we?"

He set his cup down. Walked to her. Took her cup. Set it on the counter. Took her hands.

"We're us," he said.

She stared at him. "That's not an answer."

"It's the only answer I have."

She pulled her hands free. Grabbed a napkin. Threw it at him. He caught it.

"You have a catching problem," she said.

"You have a throwing problem."

"I have an Alex problem."

He tucked the napkin into his pocket. "The worst kind."

He kissed her. She kissed him back. The coffee grew cold. They didn't notice.

Part Two: The Text

Lyra's phone buzzed at noon.

She was on the couch. Alex was beside her. His arm was around her. Her head was on his shoulder. They were watching something. She didn't know what. She wasn't watching the screen.

She picked up her phone.

Jay: So

Jay: Alex's apartment

Jay: This morning

Jay: I heard noises

Lyra's face went red. What noises?

Jay: Happy noises

Jay: Finally noises

Jay: About time noises

Lyra grabbed a pillow. Screamed into it.

Alex looked at her. "What?"

She showed him the phone. He read the messages. His ears went red.

"Jay," he said.

"Jay," she agreed.

She typed back. We're just best friends.

Jay: Best friends who sleep in the same bed?

Lyra: We were tired.

Jay: For six years?

Lyra: Shut up.

Jay: Make me.

Lyra threw her phone on the couch. Alex picked it up. Typed something. Handed it back.

She looked at the screen. Alex says hi.

Jay: Hi Alex. Take care of her.

Alex types: I will.

Jay: Good.

The conversation ended. Lyra stared at the phone. Alex put his arm around her.

"She knows," Lyra said.

He nodded. "She knows."

"Everyone knows."

He kissed her hair. "Everyone knows."

She leaned into him. His chest was warm. His hand was in her hair. The movie played. They didn't watch it.

Part Three: The Door

There was a knock at 7 PM.

Lyra was in the kitchen. Alex was on the couch. The apartment was clean. The dishes were done. The counters were wiped. They'd spent the afternoon cleaning. Neither of them said why. They both knew.

Lyra walked to the door. Opened it.

Jay stood there. Keifer behind her. Yuri behind him. Mica and Calix. Care and Cole. Freya and Erdix. Ash and David. Felix. Ci N and Rakki.

The hallway was full. Sixteen people. Sixteen people who had become something more than roommates.

Jay looked at Lyra. At her face. At the flush on her cheeks. At the smile she couldn't hide.

"So," Jay said.

Lyra crossed her arms. "So."

"Best friends?"

Lyra looked at Alex. Alex walked to her. Put his arm around her waist.

"Best friends," Alex said.

Jay grabbed a napkin from her pocket. Threw it at him. He caught it.

"You have a catching problem," Jay said.

"You have a throwing problem."

"I have an Alex problem."

He tucked the napkin into his pocket. "The worst kind."

The hallway erupted. Yuri was laughing. Mica was crying. Care was holding Cole. Freya was taking photos. Erdix was filming. Ash was hugging David. Felix was sketching. Ci N was writing.

Rakki looked at him. "What are you writing?"

He showed her. "Page 340. Alex and Lyra. Finally."

She kissed his cheek. He held her hand.

---

Part Four: The Dinner

They ordered pizza. Seven boxes. Enough for everyone. The apartment was full. People sat on the couch. On the floor. On the chairs. On the counter. The windows were open. The city was loud. The night was warm.

Yuri raised his slice. "To Alex and Lyra."

Everyone raised their slices. "To Alex and Lyra."

They ate. They laughed. They talked. The years fell away. They were back in Room 7. The same chaos. The same love. The same sixteen people who had found each other.

Jay sat beside Lyra. Their shoulders touched.

"You're happy," Jay said.

Lyra looked at Alex. He was across the room, talking to Keifer. His hand was in his pocket. His ears were red. He was smiling.

"Yeah," Lyra said. "I'm happy."

Jay took her hand. "Good."

Lyra squeezed. "Good."

Ci N appeared beside them. "Page 341. Happiness confirmed. Probability of more happiness: 100 percent."

Lyra grabbed a napkin. Threw it at him. He caught it.

"You have a catching problem," she said.

"You have a throwing problem."

"I have a Ci N problem."

He tucked the napkin into his pocket. "The worst kind."

He walked back to Rakki. Sat beside her. Picked up his fox. Held it.

---

Part Five: The Night

The guests left at midnight.

The apartment was quiet. The pizza boxes were stacked. The cups were washed. The floor was swept. Lyra stood in the kitchen. Alex stood beside her.

"Today was good," she said.

He nodded. "Today was good."

She looked at him. At his face. At his eyes. At the way he was looking at her like she was the only thing in the world worth seeing.

"Alex."

He waited.

"I'm glad we're not best friends anymore."

He stepped closer. "What are we?"

She touched his face. "We're everything."

He kissed her. She kissed him back.

She pulled back. Her face was red. His ears were red. Her hands were on his chest. His hands were on her waist.

"I love you," she said.

He kissed her forehead. "I love you."

She smiled. He smiled. The apartment was warm. The city was bright. The world was quiet.

"Best friends?" she asked.

He pulled her closer. "Best friends."

She hit his chest. "You're impossible."

He caught her hand. Kissed her knuckles. "You like it."

She didn't answer. She closed her eyes. His heartbeat was under her ear. His hand was in her hair.

From across the hall, muffled through the walls, Jay's voice: "GO TO SLEEP."

Lyra laughed. Alex laughed. The apartment was warm. The city was bright. The world was waiting.

She closed her eyes. Alex was beside her. The apartment was quiet. She was exactly where she wanted to be.

She slept.

Epilogue: Six Months Later

The café was small. Warm. The smell of coffee and bread and something sweet. Sixteen people sat around a long table. Yuri was telling a story. Lyra was laughing. Alex was watching her. His hand was on the back of her chair. Her hand was on his knee.

Jay leaned against Keifer. Her head was on his shoulder. His arm was around her.

"Six months," she said.

He kissed her hair. "Six months."

She looked at the table. At the people. At the chaos. At the love.

"I'm happy," she said.

He pulled her closer. "Me too."

Ci N opened his notebook. Page 342. "Room 7. Still together. Probability of more reunions: 100 percent."

Rakki looked at him. "You calculated that?"

He closed his notebook. "I calculate what matters."

She kissed his cheek. He held her hand.

Lyra looked at Alex. "Best friends?"

He kissed her forehead. "Best friends."

She hit his chest. He caught her hand. Kissed her knuckles.

"You're impossible," she said.

He smiled. "You like it."

She didn't answer. She closed her eyes. His heartbeat was under her ear. His hand was in her hair. The café was loud. The room was full. She was exactly where she wanted to be.

The End.
