What if many servants and nobles had seen us leave and were already questioning Becca?

Even worse, what if she walked into the castle and was immediately detained?

I dug my nails into my palms.

She was fine. She had to be fine.

But the minutes stretched on.

And on.

And on.

I did not know how long I sat there. Long enough for the shadows to shift. Long enough for the crowds to thin and thicken again. Long enough for my chest to grow tight.

What if she was not coming back?

What if something had already happened?

What if I had just sent my only friend to her doom because I was too selfish to—

A familiar presence brushed against my senses.

My head snapped up.

Becca was weaving through the crowd, a small bag clutched against her chest. Her steps were quick but not frantic. She looked calm.

She was alright.

I felt so relieved.

"Becca!" I scrambled to my feet as she ducked into the alcove.
