Chapter 56 - partnership

ROOM 7

Chapter Fifty-Three: The Partnership

One year after graduation, Jay's phone rang at 7 AM.

She was in the kitchen, making coffee. Keifer was still in bed. The shark was on his pillow. Bruce was on hers. They'd accumulated more stuffed animals over the years. Neither of them admitted to buying them. They just appeared.

She looked at the screen. Her father.

"Dad?"

"Jay." His voice was different. Not heavy. Not light. Something in between. "I need you to come to the office today."

She set the coffee pot down. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing's wrong." A pause. "Yuri's father reached out. Hanamitchi Corporation. They want a partnership."

She went still. "Hanamitchi?"

"Yuri's family."

"I know who they are."

Another pause. "I want you there. For the meeting. You've been handling the international accounts. You know the numbers better than anyone."

She looked at the bedroom door. Keifer was still asleep. She could hear him breathing.

"What time?"

"10 AM."

"I'll be there."

She hung up. Stood in the kitchen. The coffee was cold. She poured it down the sink. Made a fresh pot. Made two cups. Black. No sugar. Carried them to the bedroom.

Keifer was sitting up. His hair was messy. His eyes were half-open. The shark was in his lap.

"You're up early," he said.

She handed him a cup. "My father called."

He took it. "Everything okay?"

She sat on the edge of the bed. "Hanamitchi wants a partnership."

He went still. "Yuri's family?"

She nodded. "Yuri's family."

He looked at his coffee. At the steam rising. At her face. "What did you say?"

She touched his face. "I said I'd go to the meeting."

He covered her hand with his. "I'll come with you."

She shook her head. "This is business. You have your own work."

"I'll come with you."

"Keifer—"

"I'll come with you."

She looked at his face. At his eyes. At the way he was looking at her like he wasn't going to let her walk into that building alone.

"Okay," she said.

He kissed her forehead. She closed her eyes.

The apartment was quiet. The sun was rising. The day was beginning.

Part One: The Building

The Mariano headquarters was a glass tower in the heart of Makati.

Jay had grown up in this building. She'd spent summers running through the halls. She'd spent holidays hiding in her father's office. She'd spent years learning the business, learning the numbers, learning the weight of the name on the door.

Today, the building felt different.

She walked through the lobby. Keifer beside her. Her hand was in his. His hand was in hers. The security guard nodded. The receptionist smiled. The elevator doors opened.

"Ms. Mariano. Mr. Watson."

She stepped inside. He followed. The doors closed.

"You're nervous," he said.

She looked at the numbers above the door. "I'm not nervous."

"Your hand is shaking."

She looked at their hands. She was holding his. Her fingers were trembling.

"I'm not nervous," she said.

He kissed her forehead. "You're nervous."

The doors opened. The executive floor. Glass walls. Polished floors. The smell of coffee and money and ambition.

Her father was waiting. Jasper Mariano. Tall. Distinguished. His hair was grayer than she remembered. His eyes were softer.

"Jay." He hugged her. Held her longer than usual. "Thank you for coming."

She pulled back. "You said it was important."

He looked at Keifer. Nodded. "Keifer."

"Sir."

Jasper turned. Walked down the hall. They followed.

The conference room was at the end. Glass walls. Long table. Chairs on both sides. At the far end, a man was standing. Older. Gray hair. Kind eyes. He was wearing a suit that cost more than most people's rent. He was smiling.

"Mr. Mariano." He extended his hand. "Thank you for agreeing to meet."

Jasper shook his hand. "Mr. Hanamitchi. Thank you for coming."

The man looked at Jay. His smile widened. "You must be the daughter. The one Yuri talks about."

Jay's face went red. "He talks about me?"

"Constantly." The man laughed. "I'm Yuri's father. Please. Call me Tito."

Jay shook his hand. His grip was firm. His eyes were kind. "It's nice to meet you."

He looked at Keifer. "And you must be the young man who stole her heart."

Keifer's ears went red. "I'm Keifer."

The man nodded. "Yuri talks about you too. He says you're annoying."

Keifer's ears went redder. "He's not wrong."

The man laughed. Jasper laughed. Jay grabbed a napkin from the table. Threw it at Keifer. He caught it.

"You have a catching problem," she said.

"You have a throwing problem."

"I have a Keifer problem."

He tucked the napkin into his pocket. "The worst kind."

The men watched. Yuri's father smiled. Jay's father shook his head.

"They're always like this," Jasper said.

Yuri's father nodded. "Yuri said the same thing."

They sat. The meeting began.

Part Two: The Proposal

The numbers were spread across the table.

Reports. Projections. Forecasts. Jay had seen them all. She'd reviewed them last night, alone, in her apartment, while Keifer slept. She knew every figure. Every decimal. Every risk.

Yuri's father spoke. His voice was calm. Measured. "Hanamitchi has been in the shipping industry for three generations. We've seen wars. We've seen recessions. We've seen booms and busts. But we've never seen an opportunity like this."

He pointed at the reports. "The partnership would combine our fleets. Our routes. Our networks. It would make us the largest shipping conglomerate in Southeast Asia."

Jasper nodded. "The numbers are promising."

"They're more than promising." Yuri's father leaned forward. "They're inevitable."

Jay watched him. His eyes were bright. His hands were steady. He believed what he was saying. She could see it. She could feel it.

"My father started this company with one ship," Yuri's father said. "One ship. One route. One dream. He used to tell me, 'The sea doesn't care about your name. It cares about your heart.'"

He looked at Jay. "Yuri talks about you. He talks about all of you. The room. The beds. The chaos. He says you taught him what family means."

Jay's throat tightened.

"He says you taught him that business isn't about money. It's about people."

She looked at her father. His eyes were soft. His hands were still.

"I want this partnership," Yuri's father said. "Not because of the money. Because of the people. Because of what we could build together. Because of what our children could build together."

The room was quiet.

Jasper looked at Jay. "What do you think?"

She looked at the reports. At the numbers. At the projections. At the risks. She looked at Keifer. He was watching her. His face was calm. His eyes were steady.

"I think," she said, "we should do it."

Yuri's father smiled. Jasper nodded.

"Then we'll do it," Jasper said.

They shook hands. The deal was made.

Part Three: The Celebration

Yuri's father invited them to dinner.

His house was warm. Lived in. The same house Jay had visited months ago. The same kitchen. The same table. The same smell of garlic and vinegar and home.

Yuri was there. He was wearing a collared shirt. Ironed. Tucked in. He looked at Jay. At Keifer. At their hands.

"You came," he said.

Jay nodded. "We came."

He looked at Keifer. "You too."

Keifer nodded. "Me too."

Yuri's mother emerged from the kitchen. Her hands were flour-dusted. Her eyes were bright. "You're here! Both of you! Sit! Eat! You're too thin!"

She pulled Jay into a hug. Pulled Keifer into a hug. Pulled them to the table.

The food was endless. Rice. Adobo. Vegetables. Something fried. Something stewed. Dishes Jay remembered from her last visit. Dishes that tasted like love.

Yuri sat across from her. Keifer sat beside her. Their hands were under the table. Their fingers were intertwined.

"Yuri," Jay said.

He looked up.

"Thank you. For talking to your father. About the room. About us."

He set his fork down. "I didn't do anything."

"You did everything."

He looked at her. At her face. At the way she was looking at him like he was more than just the loud boy from Room 7.

"I just wanted him to know," Yuri said, "that there are things more important than money."

She smiled. "I know."

He picked up his fork. "Good."

They ate. Yuri's mother talked. Yuri's father laughed. The night passed.

Part Four: The Walk

After dinner, Yuri walked them to the door.

The street was quiet. The lights were on. The stars were hidden behind the city glow.

"Yuri," Jay said.

He looked at her.

"Your father is a good man."

He nodded. "He's okay."

She smiled. "He's more than okay."

Yuri looked at Keifer. "Take care of her."

Keifer nodded. "I will."

Yuri looked back at Jay. "I'm happy for you. Both of you." He paused. "I meant what I said. About the room. About what you taught me."

She touched his arm. "You taught us too."

He covered her hand with his. Held it for a moment. Then let go.

"Go home," he said. "It's late."

She nodded. Took Keifer's hand. Walked down the street.

Yuri stood in the doorway. Watched them go. The door closed behind him.

Part Five: The Night

The apartment was dark when they got home.

Jay kicked off her shoes. Dropped her bag. Walked to the window. The city was bright. The lights were on. The world was awake.

Keifer stood behind her. His arms went around her waist. His chin rested on her shoulder.

"You're quiet," he said.

"I'm thinking."

"About what?"

She leaned back against him. "About Yuri. About his father. About the partnership."

He kissed her neck. "Are you happy?"

She turned in his arms. Faced him. "Yes."

He touched her face. "Then I'm happy."

She kissed him. He kissed her back.

The apartment was warm. The city was bright. The world was quiet.

"Keifer."

"Yeah."

"Thank you. For coming with me."

He pulled her closer. "I'll always come with you."

She smiled. He smiled. The shark was on the bed. Bruce was on the pillow. The city hummed outside.

"I love you," she said.

He kissed her forehead. "I love you too."

She closed her eyes. His heartbeat was under her ear. His hand was in her hair.

From across the hall, muffled through the walls, Lyra's voice: "GO TO SLEEP."

Jay laughed. Keifer laughed. The apartment was warm. The city was bright. The world was waiting.

She closed her eyes. Keifer was beside her. The shark was beside her. The partnership was signed. The future was coming.

She was ready.

The End.
