Chapter 64 - Chapter 64– A New Direction

Nobody touched the tag.

Not for a long time.

It rested in Kushina's hands, warm from the chakra that had awakened it.

The clearing remained silent.

Not because there was nothing left to say.

Because none of them knew where to begin.

Kushina stared at the engraved spiral.

"…she knew."

Her voice barely rose above a whisper.

"…she knew exactly what would happen."

Daichi didn't answer immediately.

When he finally spoke—

his voice was quiet.

"She hoped it wouldn't."

Silence settled again.

Hana stepped closer.

Not enough to invade the moment.

Just enough to be heard.

"She talked about you."

Kushina looked up.

"…me?"

Hana nodded slowly.

"Not by name."

A pause.

"She didn't know your name."

Another.

"But she believed someone would come after her."

Kushina lowered her eyes again.

"…she believed someone would succeed."

Minato crossed his arms.

"What else did she tell you?"

Hana looked toward the forest before answering.

"She wasn't afraid of dying."

A pause.

"She was afraid her mistakes would survive her."

Silence.

Those words lingered.

Heavier than any warning.

Kushina slowly closed her hand around the tag.

"…they won't."

Everyone looked at her.

She took a slow breath.

"I'm not becoming her."

Another pause.

"But I'm not abandoning people either."

Daichi studied her carefully.

"You may have to choose."

Kushina met his eyes.

"Then I'll find another way."

Silence.

For the first time—

Daichi didn't argue.

Hana hesitated.

"There is… something else."

Kushina frowned.

"…what?"

Hana reached into her jacket once more.

This time she unfolded an old piece of paper.

The edges were worn.

The ink faded.

A rough map.

Daichi immediately recognized it.

"…where did you get this?"

"Akane."

Hana laid it carefully on the ground.

"It isn't complete."

"But she hid it."

Minato crouched beside the map.

His eyes moved across the faded markings.

"…these aren't roads."

"No."

Hana shook her head.

"They're safe houses."

Kushina blinked.

"…safe houses?"

"For Uzumaki survivors."

Silence.

The world seemed to stop again.

"There are more?"

Kushina's voice came out almost hopeful.

Hana didn't answer immediately.

"I don't know."

A pause.

"Some may already be gone."

"Some may be empty."

Another.

"But Akane believed one of them was still active."

Daichi leaned over the map.

His expression changed.

Recognition.

"…I know this mountain."

Minato looked at him.

"You've been there?"

"Once."

A pause.

"Years ago."

Another.

"I thought it had already fallen."

Hana quietly shook her head.

"It didn't."

Silence.

Kushina looked between all of them.

"So instead of waiting for them…"

A pause.

"…we find this place first."

Minato nodded once.

"If it still exists…"

"…it may have answers."

Daichi remained silent.

Thinking.

Calculating.

Finally—

he nodded.

"It changes our route."

Kushina smiled faintly.

"For once…"

"…we're ahead of them."

A faint rumble echoed inside her.

Not mocking.

Not amused.

Thoughtful.

"…interesting…"

Kushina almost smiled.

"…welcome back."

Kurama didn't answer.

But this time—

he didn't disappear either.

Daichi carefully folded the map.

"We leave immediately."

Kushina laughed softly.

"There he is."

"…I was worried for a second."

Minato almost smiled.

Almost.

Hana looked at the three of them quietly.

For the first time in a long while—

she looked like someone who wasn't running anymore.

Far away—

beneath layers of stone—

a masked figure entered a silent chamber.

"The messenger reached them."

Another figure looked up.

"And?"

"The route has changed."

Silence.

Then—

a slow nod.

"Good."

A pause.

"They're walking exactly where we need them to."

The chamber fell silent once more.

Somewhere in the darkness—

a pair of eyes opened.

Waiting.

Patiently.
