Chapter 85 - CHAPTER 85:THE VANAX MEETING

Three weeks had passed since training began. Three weeks of blood, sweat, and tears. Three weeks of transformation.

Kafu stood on the observation deck of the Golden Promise, watching the Varnax Prime system grow larger on the viewscreen. Behind him, his twelve wives sat in quiet meditation, their presence a comfort as he prepared for the most dangerous diplomatic mission of his life.

The clone had arranged everything. Lord Varnax Sr. himself had requested this meeting, impressed by "Lord Aurelius's" insights and eager to discuss "expansion opportunities."

What the patriarch didn't know was that the man he was about to meet was the same man whose people he had enslaved for centuries.

[MISSION BRIEFING — THE VARNAX MEETING]

Aspect Detail

Location Varnax Prime, Central Spire

Host Lord Varnax Sr. (Eternal Sovereign 5)

Attendees All 12 Varnax heirs, top advisors

Cover Identity Lord Aurelius of the Golden Dawn

True Identity Kafu of the Ashari

Risk Level Extreme

Objective Gather intelligence, assess leadership, plant seeds of discord

Kafu checked his appearance one last time. The Veil of Forgetting had been extended to cover his true identity—even Varnax's legendary perception wouldn't pierce it. His runes were suppressed. His power was concealed. He looked exactly like what he claimed to be: a wealthy noble with no connection to the slave rebellion.

Ready? Kyrella's voice echoed through the bond.

Ready.

We'll be watching. If anything goes wrong...

If anything goes wrong, you evacuate. All of you. No heroics.

And you?

I'll find a way out. I always do.

---

THE ARRIVAL

The Golden Promise descended through Varnax Prime's atmosphere, passing through layers of defenses that would have destroyed a lesser ship. The planet below was a monument to excess—gleaming cities, floating palaces, artificial moons that served as pleasure resorts.

The Central Spire rose from the capital like a knife stabbing the sky—a million meters of obsidian and gold, its peak lost in the upper atmosphere. This was where Lord Varnax Sr. held court, surrounded by his children, his advisors, his army of sycophants.

The ship docked at a private platform near the spire's summit. A delegation waited—twenty guards in ceremonial armor, a protocol officer, and Valerius Jr. himself, his face split by a welcoming smile.

"Lord Aurelius! So good to see you again!" The heir embraced him warmly, the soul seal ensuring his loyalty. "My father is eager to meet you. He's been talking about nothing else since our last conversation."

Kafu returned the embrace with practiced warmth. "The feeling is mutual, my friend. Lead the way."

His wives remained on the ship—protocol demanded it, and Kafu preferred it that way. Twelve ancestors would be... conspicuous.

---

THE THRONE ROOM

The throne room was everything Kafu had imagined and more.

It occupied the entire top floor of the spire—a vast chamber open to the sky, its ceiling a shimmering force field that held back the thin upper atmosphere. Thrones lined the walls—twelve of them, one for each of Varnax's children. And at the center, on a dais of compressed gravitonium, sat the patriarch himself.

[LORD VARNAX SR. — DETAILED ASSESSMENT]

Aspect Value

Age 1.2 BILLION YEARS

Cultivation ETERNAL SOVEREIGN LEVEL 5

Physical IF 5 SEXTRILLION

Personality CALCULATING, PATIENT, DANGEROUS

Weaknesses OVERCONFIDENCE, CONTEMPT FOR "LESSER" BEINGS

Current Mood CURIOUS, AMUSED

Kafu approached the dais with measured steps, his expression appropriately respectful. A hundred pairs of eyes followed him—guards, advisors, heirs, servants. He felt their gazes like physical weight.

"Lord Aurelius of the Golden Dawn." Varnax Sr.'s voice was like grinding continents. "I've heard much about you from my son. Please, sit."

A chair materialized before the dais—not a throne, but close enough. Kafu sat, maintaining eye contact with the patriarch.

"The honor is mine, Lord Varnax. Your son speaks highly of you."

"As he should." The patriarch smiled—a predatory expression. "Tell me about yourself, Lord Aurelius. Where does the Golden Dawn hail from? I confess, I've never heard of your house."

Kafu smiled easily. "We prefer it that way. The Golden Dawn has always valued discretion over display. Our wealth comes from... quiet investments."

"Quiet investments." Varnax Sr. leaned forward. "Like the Chaos Writer Tablet?"

"Among other things. I was pleased to be able to help your son with that acquisition."

"Yes, about that." The patriarch's eyes narrowed. "The tablet doesn't seem to work as expected. My advisors have been studying it for weeks with... limited results."

Kafu maintained his calm expression. "Such artifacts often have a learning curve. Perhaps I could examine it? My house has some experience with ancient relics."

A long pause. Then Varnax Sr. nodded slowly. "Perhaps. Later. First, I want to discuss your ideas for expansion."

---

THE EXPANSION PROPOSAL

For the next hour, Kafu laid out a detailed plan for expanding Varnax influence into new territories—territories that happened to be far from the slave worlds the alliance was preparing to liberate.

[THE "EXPANSION" PLAN]

Phase Target "Benefits" Actual Purpose

1 The Void Reaches Untapped resources Keeps Varnax busy for months

2 The Crystal Expanse New trade routes Distracts from slave worlds

3 The Nebula Kingdoms Potential allies Wastes military resources

4 The Outer Darkness Legendary treasures Sends elites on wild goose chase

Varnax Sr. listened with growing interest, his advisors taking notes, his children leaning forward with excitement.

"Brilliant," one of the heirs murmured. "Absolutely brilliant."

"These Void Reaches," another asked, "are they really as rich as you claim?"

Kafu spread his hands. "I have reports from my best scouts. The resources there could double your wealth within a decade."

The patriarch stroked his chin. "And you're willing to share this information... why?"

"Because I want a partner. Someone with the military might to actually exploit these opportunities. The Golden Dawn has wealth, but we lack... teeth." Kafu smiled. "You have teeth. Many teeth."

Varnax Sr. laughed—a genuine sound, surprisingly warm. "I like you, Lord Aurelius. You're honest about your ambitions. Refreshing, in a universe full of schemers."

"I try."

---

THE HEIRS

After the formal meeting, Valerius Jr. invited Kafu to a private gathering with his siblings. Twelve heirs, twelve agendas, twelve potential weaknesses to exploit.

Cornelia 28,000 Genesis Lord 8 Quiet, observant Hard to read

Septimus 25,000 Genesis Lord 7 Playful, careless Doesn't take things seriously

Maximus 22,000 Genesis Lord 6 Eager, inexperienced Easily misled

Kafu filed away each assessment, already planning how to use their weaknesses.

Valerius Jr. clapped him on the shoulder. "My brothers and sisters wanted to meet the famous Lord Aurelius. I hope you don't mind."

"Not at all." Kafu smiled warmly. "I'm always happy to make new friends."

---

SERAPHINA

Seraphina approached him first, her cold eyes studying him like a specimen.

"Lord Aurelius. My brother speaks highly of you."

"Your brother is too kind." Kafu met her gaze without flinching. "And you are...?"

"Seraphina. The second eldest." She circled him slowly. "I've reviewed your proposal. It's... interesting. Almost too interesting."

"Oh?"

"Most people who approach our family want something. Protection, resources, status. You seem to want... nothing."

Kafu laughed. "I want a partner. There's a difference."

"Is there?"

"Partnership implies mutual benefit. I gain access to your military. You gain access to my intelligence. Everyone wins."

Seraphina studied him for a long moment, then nodded slowly. "I'll be watching you, Lord Aurelius."

"I'd expect nothing less."

---

DAMIEN

Damien was everything Kafu hated—arrogant, cruel, entitled. He approached with a sneer already forming.

"So you're the famous Lord Aurelius. Doesn't look like much."

Kafu smiled pleasantly. "Appearances can be deceiving."

"Can they?" Damien circled him like a predator. "I heard you gave my brother the Chaos Writer Tablet. A gift worth quadrillions. What do you expect in return?"

"Nothing. It was a gift."

"Nothing?" Damien laughed. "No one gives gifts like that without expecting something."

"Perhaps that's your problem." Kafu's voice remained pleasant. "You assume everyone has an agenda. Some people are just... generous."

Damien's eyes narrowed. "I don't believe you."

"That's your choice."

---

CASSANDRA

Cassandra was different—curious, intellectual, genuinely interested in Kafu's knowledge.

"Lord Aurelius! I've been dying to ask you about the tablet. How did you find it? What does it really do? Is it true it can rewrite reality?"

Kafu found himself almost liking her. Almost.

"I found it in a place you've never heard of. It does many things. And yes, it can rewrite reality—but only if you know how to use it."

Cassandra's eyes lit up. "Can you teach me?"

"Perhaps. Someday. When you're ready."

"When will I be ready?"

"When you understand that power isn't the point."

She frowned, confused, but nodded. "I'll think about that."

---

THE PRIVATE MEETING

Later that evening, Varnax Sr. summoned Kafu to his private study—a room filled with artifacts from a thousand conquered worlds.

"Close the door." The patriarch gestured to a chair. "Sit."

Kafu obeyed, his senses on high alert.

"I've been watching you all day. Watching how you interact with my children. My advisors. My guards." Varnax Sr. leaned back. "You're smooth, Lord Aurelius. Very smooth. Almost too smooth."

"I'm not sure what you mean."

"I mean that most people, when faced with this much power, show something. Fear. Awe. Greed. You show... nothing." The patriarch's eyes narrowed. "That's either very brave or very stupid."

"Or very careful."

"Careful." Varnax Sr. chuckled. "Yes. Careful. That's a good word." He leaned forward. "Tell me the truth, Lord Aurelius. What do you really want?"

Kafu met his gaze without flinching. "I want to watch."

"Watch what?"

"Watch the most powerful family in existence do what they do best. Conquer. Expand. Rule." Kafu smiled. "I want a front-row seat to history."

The patriarch studied him for a long moment, then laughed—a genuine, warm sound.

"I believe you. And I like you." He extended his hand. "Welcome to the family, Lord Aurelius. Not by blood, but by alliance. You're one of us now."

Kafu took his hand, his expression appropriately grateful.

"Thank you, Lord Varnax. I won't let you down."

No, he thought. I won't let you down. I'll let your whole empire down.

---

THE DEPARTURE

As the Golden Promise lifted off from Varnax Prime, Kafu allowed himself a small smile.

His wives gathered around him.

"Well?" Kyrella asked.

"Complete success. They trust me. They're going to waste months, maybe years, chasing phantom opportunities in the Void Reaches. And I've identified every weakness in the family."

Morana emerged from shadow. "The heirs?"

"Seraphina is suspicious but will watch rather than act. Damien is arrogant—easy to provoke. Cassandra is curious—could be turned. Marcus is lazy—ignore him. Octavia is impatient—she'll make mistakes. Lucius is honorable—we can use that. Aurelia is emotional—vulnerable. Ignatius is hot-headed—easy to bait. Cornelia is quiet—dangerous, but won't act alone. Septimus is careless—he'll slip up. Maximus is inexperienced—easily misled."

"And Valerius Jr.?"

"Completely under our control. The soul seal has bonded perfectly. He'll do whatever I ask."

Kyrella smiled. "Then the game continues."

"The game continues." Kafu looked back at Varnax Prime, shrinking in the distance. "And when it ends, they'll never see it coming."

"Kafu? You're back? How did it go?"

"Perfectly. How's training?"

"Amazing. Valen says I'm ready for the next level. Whatever that means."

Kafu smiled. "It means you're about to become very powerful, very quickly."
