The journey back to Magnolia took two days.

Calvin spent most of it observing. Happy carried Macao, who drifted in and out of consciousness. Natsu ranged ahead, equal parts bodyguard and restless energy. Lucy walked beside Calvin, initially trying to make conversation before accepting that he preferred silence.

What fascinated Calvin wasn't the people—it was everyone else they passed.

Merchants on the road. Farmers tending fields. A group of traveling mages heading toward a different town. Each person possessed a unique life signature, but more than that, each showed distinct magical patterns woven through their life force.

Some patterns were dormant—potential that had never been trained. Others burned actively, shaped by years of practice into specialized forms. A merchant's magic centered in his hands, probably enhancing his ability to appraise goods. A farmer's magic saturated her connection to the soil, making crops grow faster. The traveling mages showed combat-oriented patterns—aggressive, externalized, ready to deploy.

Calvin cataloged them all. His brain sorted and categorized like it had in his first life, building a database of magical signatures and their associated patterns.

By the time Magnolia's walls came into view, he'd identified forty-three distinct magical pattern types and seventeen hybrid variations.

The town itself was larger than he'd expected from anime episodes. Buildings packed together in organized chaos, streets filled with people going about their daily lives. His life sense registered thousands of signatures overlapping—overwhelming until he learned to filter them into background noise.

"There it is!" Natsu pointed toward a building on the town's eastern side. "Fairy Tail!"

The guild hall was exactly as Calvin remembered from screenshots and episode stills. Two stories, wood and stone construction, with the Fairy Tail emblem prominently displayed above the entrance.

They pushed through the doors into controlled chaos.

People everywhere. Conversations overlapping. The smell of alcohol and food. Magical signatures blazing with varying intensities throughout the room. Calvin's life sense provided too much information too quickly—his brain struggled to process individual patterns when dozens existed in close proximity.

He focused on breathing. On filtering. On treating the sensory input like code that needed debugging rather than overwhelming stimulus.

"Dad!" A child's voice cut through the noise.

A boy with purple hair ran toward them. Romeo, Calvin's memory supplied. Macao's son.

"Romeo..." Macao's voice was weak but genuine. "I'm sorry I made you worry."

The reunion played out with appropriate emotion. Calvin watched without participating, noting but not fully understanding the boy's relief, the father's guilt, the way other guild members gathered to welcome Macao back.

"Well done, Natsu." A woman approached from behind the bar—white hair, blue eyes, gentle smile that didn't quite hide the dangerous magical signature underneath. Mirajane Strauss. S-Class mage whose power currently lay dormant after her sister's death. "And you must be the new mage Lucy just mentioned."

Calvin turned his attention to her. "Calvin."

"Mirajane. Though everyone calls me Mira." Her smile remained professional but warm. "Lucy said you were interested in joining Fairy Tail?"

"Yes."

"Then you'll need to speak with Master Makarov. He's upstairs in his office. I'll let him know you're here."

She moved away with practiced efficiency. Calvin remained near the entrance, observing the guild's internal dynamics. Natsu had already gotten into an argument with a dark-haired mage who stripped his shirt while shouting. Gray Fullbuster, another main character. Their fight escalated into property damage within thirty seconds.

Nobody seemed concerned by this.

A massive figure intervened—white hair, scarred face, overwhelming physical presence. Elfman Strauss, Mirajane's brother. His magical pattern showed traces of Takeover magic similar to the Vulcans but far more refined.

The pattern was fascinating. Calvin wanted to study it, to understand how human physiology integrated with transformation magic without the corruption he'd seen in the elemental constructs.

"Calvin?" Mirajane had returned. "Master will see you now."

She led him upstairs to a modest office. Behind the desk sat a figure barely three feet tall—elderly features, serious expression, wearing a jester-like hat. But his magical signature was immense. Compressed and controlled, but easily the most powerful in the building.

Makarov Dreyar. Guild Master. Saint-class mage.

"So you're the one who helped bring Macao back." Makarov's voice was deeper than his size suggested. His eyes studied Calvin with unnerving intensity. "Mirajane tells me you want to join Fairy Tail."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Calvin considered the question. Honesty seemed appropriate. "I need allies. Information. A place to conduct research without drawing hostile attention. Fairy Tail's reputation suggests it protects its members."

Makarov's expression didn't change. "Research into what?"

"Life magic. Creation. Resurrection mechanics."

"Resurrection." Makarov's tone sharpened. "That's forbidden magic, boy."

"Not resurrection of the dead as necromancy. Resurrection as creating new life from dead materials. My magic works through understanding life force patterns."

"Show me your hands."

Calvin extended both hands. Makarov studied them, then nodded slowly. "No dark marks. No corruption signs. Your magic feels unusual but not malicious." He leaned back in his chair. "However, I can't accept you without knowing your capabilities. Fairy Tail takes on dangerous work. I need to know you can handle yourself."

"You want a power assessment."

"Exactly. Choose an opponent from the guild. Someone at your approximate skill level. We'll have a friendly match in the training area out back."

Calvin's mind sorted through the magical signatures he'd sensed in the main hall. Natsu was too chaotic—the fight would destroy too much. Gray used ice magic with interesting patterns but similar power output to Natsu. Elfman's Takeover magic was intriguing but still developing.

Then there was the signature he'd noticed immediately upon entering. Powerful, controlled, with an unusual pattern that suggested spatial manipulation integrated with combat magic. Currently absent from the main hall but present somewhere in the building.

"I choose Erza Scarlet," Calvin said.

Makarov's eyebrows rose. Mirajane, who'd remained in the office, made a small sound of surprise.

"You're sure about that?" Makarov asked carefully. "Erza is our strongest young mage. She's completed multiple S-Class level missions."

"Her magic is interesting. I want to observe it in combat."

Calvin kept his tone neutral, but internally he was quite certain this was the optimal choice. Erza would provide the most data. Her combat style emphasized adaptability and equipment variety—exactly what he needed to test his own creations against.

Also, he remembered from the anime that she respected strength and straightforward behavior. Better to fight someone who would take him seriously than someone who might hold back.

Makarov studied him for a long moment, then smiled slightly. "Very well. We'll hold the match after lunch. That gives Erza time to return from her morning errands."

Word spread through the guild faster than Calvin had anticipated.

By the time he descended to the main hall, everyone knew about the upcoming match. Conversations buzzed with speculation. Several people approached to ask if he was insane. Natsu looked excited. Gray looked skeptical.

Calvin found an empty table and waited, filtering the social noise into background patterns.

"Mind if I sit?" Lucy appeared with a sandwich. "You're about to fight Erza. That's... really brave. Or really stupid. I haven't decided which."

"Data collection," Calvin said simply.

"Data collection." Lucy repeated slowly. "You're treating a fight with one of Fairy Tail's strongest mages as an experiment?"

"Yes." All for progress.

She shook her head but smiled slightly. "Well, good luck. Try not to get too injured. Erza doesn't really do 'holding back.'"

"That's preferable. I need to see her magic at full capability."

Lucy stared at him, then laughed. "You're definitely going to fit in here. Fairy Tail loves people who are a little crazy."

The doors opened. Conversations stopped.

Erza Scarlet entered carrying an enormous cart of luggage behind her. She wore armor—blue and white with the Fairy Tail emblem visible. Her magical signature flared slightly as she scanned the room, then settled on Calvin.

"You're the new recruit," she said. Not a question.

"Yes. Calvin."

"I'm told you requested me as your opponent for the power assessment." Erza's expression remained neutral, but her life signature showed increased interest. "That's unusual. Most recruits choose someone closer to their level."

"Your magical pattern is more interesting than others available."

Erza blinked. Then smiled—sharp and anticipatory. "Very well. I'll meet you at the training ground in ten minutes. Don't make me wait."

She departed toward the women's dormitory, cart rolling behind her with surprising ease.

Natsu appeared at Calvin's side, grinning widely. "This is gonna be AWESOME! Erza's super strong! She's beaten me like twenty times!"

"Your combat style is incompatible with hers," Calvin observed. "You rely on aggression and overwhelming force. She uses adaptability and technique. The matchup favors her methodology."

Natsu's grin faltered. "Are you saying I'm bad at fighting?"

"No. I'm saying you choose opponents poorly."

Gray snorted from a nearby table. "He's got you there, flame brain."

The argument that followed was predictable. Calvin tuned it out and headed toward the back exit.
