Chapter 38 - Chapter 38 – The Line You Don’t Cross

That night, Emily couldn't sleep.

Again.

The mansion was silent.

Too silent.

She stood by the window, looking out at the dark gardens.

Security lights cast long shadows across the ground.

Every movement felt amplified.

Every sound sharper.

She wrapped her arms around herself unconsciously.

Still thinking.

About the crash.

About the threat.

About Alexander.

About how far this could go.

Behind her, the door opened quietly.

She didn't turn.

"You should be sleeping," Alexander said.

Emily let out a small breath.

"I could say the same to you."

He walked into the room.

Stopped beside her.

Close.

But not touching.

Not yet.

They both looked out at the same darkness.

Different thoughts.

Same silence.

After a while, Emily spoke:

"Where is the line?"

Alexander didn't look at her.

"What line?"

"The one you won't cross."

That made him pause.

A real pause.

Emily turned slightly toward him.

"Everyone has one."

Alexander finally looked at her.

His expression unreadable.

"Do I?"

"Yes."

Silence.

Then she said quietly:

"If you don't, that's what scares me."

The words hung in the air.

Heavy.

Honest.

Alexander studied her.

Longer than usual.

"You think I'm dangerous," he said.

Emily didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

No denial.

No softening.

Just truth.

Alexander nodded slightly.

"That's fair."

Emily's breath caught for a moment.

She hadn't expected that.

Then she asked the question that mattered most:

"So what happens when I'm the reason you cross that line?"

Alexander stepped closer.

Close enough now that she could feel his presence completely.

"That already happened," he said quietly.

Emily froze.

"What?"

Alexander reached out—

His hand gently resting against her uninjured arm.

Warm.

Steady.

Real.

"The moment they targeted you," he said,

"there was no line anymore."

Emily's heartbeat accelerated.

"That's not how this is supposed to work."

Alexander's voice lowered.

"That's not how anything works anymore."

For a moment—

Everything else disappeared.

The threats.

The company.

The danger.

Just them.

Standing there.

Too close.

Too real.

Emily looked up at him.

"And what happens when this ends?"

Alexander didn't look away.

"It won't."

That answer—

It wasn't comforting.

It wasn't romantic.

It was inevitable.

And for the first time—

Emily realized something she hadn't fully accepted before:

There was no going back to normal.

No clean ending.

No simple resolution.

Because this—

Whatever this was—

Had already gone too far.

And neither of them were willing to stop.
