NYX
I can still feel her, taste her pleasure in the air and hear the way she had breathed when she came down from the high. It felt like I was still there, back in my room, taking the offered body. My mind didn't want to forget. It kept reminding me of how different it felt being with her, how I almost got swept off by a strong desire to own her, all of her.
"Fuck!"
I rubbed the back of my neck. I seriously need to concentrate on the work in front of me, on the open files and the laptop that had been staring at me as I got lost in my head, not on her. It isn't time for that.
Being asleep for years didn't exempt me from work, it only fucking made me lag. I had to learn how to operate this laptop yesterday, so I could work with it.
I picked a file from the pile and accessed it. I had asked my secretary to get as much info as he could about Kevin, the bastard who had cheated on Rex. It was easy getting his info, as he was the type of bastard who put himself out there, one who got high from being the centre of attention.
He seemed to like the spotlight, and I intend to give him just that. It would be a gift to him for what he did to Rex.
A knock on my door caused me to rip my eyes away from the file. Jax walked in after the third rap.
"Good morning, sir," he greeted, bowing with one arm crossed over his chest. His dark blonde hair fell with the action, and when he locked up, his golden eyes had nothing but respect in them.
'Thank the deep, he looks like he's in a good mood,' he said in his mind, straightening as he smiled.
I smiled at his thoughts. Of course, anyone would be in a freaking good mood if they got what I was presented with last night. I'd drunk from her, gotten a taste of the sweetest blood ever. Not lying about that. Rex tasted ten times better than any blood I'd ever had since I was born, and not only that. This morning when I woke up from that forced dead slumber vampires have, I felt refreshed, like a man reborn.
"The car is ready," Jax said, cutting through my thoughts. "Are you leaving now, or is there something you want to take care of before we leave?"
"Not at all." I got up from my desk, grabbing my coat as I did so. "Did you get an appointment with him?" I asked, stepping towards him. Jax had to step back so we wouldn't be close.
Even as a bloodsucker, he always ran whenever I came close to him, claiming my smell alone was smouldering. Okay, it wasn't a claim. I'd gotten that from my maids back in my kingdom. Humans can't feel it. Only vampires can.
"Yes, it wasn't difficult. I only needed to mention your 'family' name, and the meeting was set. He'll be waiting for us at the cafe near his company," he said, checking the time while standing straighter. Even though his gaze wasn't on me for those few seconds, I knew he would have stepped back instinctively if I walked close.
"This is proving easier than I thought."
"I doubt he'll be a hassle." He was already by the door, opening it. Once more, he stood as far from me as he could, and bowed as I stepped out of my home office. He waited until I was a few paces from the door before he stepped after me. "After you meet with him, there's another place you need to be. You have a meeting with your shareholders and senior staff. I think it's necessary to show yourself to them. Most of them have started gossiping about the owners of the company, since no one has seen them for fifty years now. I already have an identity for you."
I turned, and he halted in his steps, gulping, while watching my steps, to know if I would walk back to him.
"You know you don't have to be that jumpy around me. It's not like I would hurt you."
"You won't, but your pheromones will." He still kept his distance, his eyes going from my face to my feet, ready for flight if I tried to come close to him.
I shook my head at that, turned and resumed walking. Rex must still be asleep, as none of the workers is out in the corridor. A small smile cracked on my lips. Was I that good?
"You're the grandchild of Mr Yaximon Valois, Nyxion Vaspertilio Valois. You don't need to learn more about yourself aside from what I sent to your iPad. You can go through it on our way to the Café, and get used to your identity before we get to the company."
I nodded. "Thanks."
I couldn't be more grateful to Jax. While I slept, he took care of things for me in this human world, even though he knew we wouldn't be here for a long time. Back then, I'd thought we would leave this place and the company in the hands of a lucky stranger, but not anymore.
With Rex in the picture, I would give everything to her, even if she didn't give me an heir. It was better than giving it to some bloody stranger who doesn't deserve it.
"Do you think she's the one?" Once more, Jax cut through my thoughts. Unlike me, he couldn't read thoughts, so he didn't know when I needed to be disturbed and when I didn't.
"I doubt."
Aside from her scent and the sweet taste of her blood, there was nothing else that pointed out that she might be my mate.
"I don't mind, though. We signed a contract. If I can get a child out of it, then it's a good thing. I wouldn't need a mate —"
"You know you would need one if you wish to have a mate, else your lineage will die."
"Like yours will do for cutting through my words!" I growled.
