Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Distortion

The moment the ground split open, the entire dungeon shifted in a way that neither of them could ignore. What had once felt like a controlled environment, structured and predictable within the limits of an E-Rank gate, now carried a presence that didn't belong there. The air grew denser, pressing down with a weight that felt closer to the deeper layers of high-level dungeons rather than something meant for beginners. Even the faint ambient light dimmed, as though the space itself was reacting to whatever was rising from below.

Sera instinctively stepped back, her grip tightening around her bow as her eyes locked onto the widening fracture ahead. Her breathing slowed, not out of calmness but out of control, forcing herself to remain steady despite the pressure building around them. She had been in enough dungeons to recognize when something had gone wrong, and this was far beyond a simple irregularity. This wasn't a stronger mob or a hidden boss. This was something breaking through.

"Suho," she said, her voice lower now, sharper, "this isn't normal. We should fall back."

Her words were logical, expected even, but Suho didn't move. His gaze remained fixed on the darkness below, his expression unreadable but focused in a way she hadn't seen before. To him, the pressure wasn't just something to endure. It was something he could read. The structure of the dungeon was unraveling in front of him, the system that held it together distorting as something from a deeper layer forced its way upward.

"I know," he replied quietly.

But his tone didn't match someone preparing to retreat.

The fracture widened further, and a low sound echoed from beneath, not loud, but heavy, like something massive shifting against stone. Then, slowly, a shape began to emerge. At first, it was only a dark outline, indistinct and undefined, but as it rose higher, details became clearer. Its body was composed of layered stone like the creatures before, but far denser, far more refined, as if the material itself had been compressed into something stronger. Cracks of faint blue light ran through its form, pulsing slowly like veins carrying energy instead of blood.

Sera's eyes widened slightly.

"…That's not E-Rank."

She didn't need confirmation. Every instinct she had told her the same thing. This was something closer to a D-Rank boss, maybe even higher depending on how unstable the dungeon had become. Her fingers tightened around the bowstring, but she didn't release an arrow yet. Attacking blindly here would only make things worse.

Suho stepped forward.

This time, Sera noticed it immediately.

Not just the movement—

The intention behind it.

"You're not seriously thinking of fighting that," she said, her voice sharper now, a clear edge of disbelief slipping through. "We don't even know what it is."

Suho didn't look back.

"It's not supposed to be here," he said.

"That's exactly why we shouldn't be here either," she shot back, taking a step closer to him. "If this is a leak or a break in the system, we report it. That's how this works."

He understood her reasoning.

It was correct.

It was safe.

But it wasn't enough.

Because what stood in front of them wasn't just a threat.

It was a sign.

A distortion.

And he needed to understand it.

The creature fully emerged from the fracture, its massive form settling onto the broken ground with a heavy impact that sent a ripple through the area. Its head turned slowly, and for a brief moment, its glowing lines flickered irregularly, as if it hadn't fully stabilized yet. Then its gaze locked onto them.

And the pressure intensified.

Sera felt it immediately, her body stiffening as if something invisible had wrapped around her. Her breathing hitched slightly, and for the first time since entering the dungeon, hesitation appeared clearly on her face.

"…This is bad."

Suho, however, remained still.

Not unaffected—

But in control.

A faint flicker passed through his vision.

Then—

The system responded.

---

[Hunter: Suho]

[Lv: 36 (E-Rank)]

[Title: None]

[Primary Trait: Hidden]

[Active Skill: Modifier (A-Rank)]

---

The window appeared clearly, stable even within the distortion, but Suho knew better. What he saw was only the surface. Beneath it, something far more complex was reacting, something that didn't show itself unless he reached for it.

He didn't.

Not yet.

The creature moved.

Faster than something its size should.

Its arm came down in a heavy arc, aiming to crush everything in front of it.

Sera reacted instantly, jumping back as she released an arrow to intercept, but the projectile shattered on impact, doing little more than slow the motion slightly. The force of the attack hit the ground, sending debris outward and forcing her to retreat further.

"Suho!"

He stepped in.

Timing.

Position.

Control.

The moment the creature's movement reached its peak, he activated it.

Not fully.

Just enough.

---

A shift.

---

The trajectory altered by the smallest margin.

Enough for him to move through the opening instead of being caught in the impact.

His strike followed immediately, landing against the glowing cracks running through its body. The contact sent a ripple through the creature, its form destabilizing slightly before forcing itself back into place.

It didn't fall.

But it reacted.

And that was enough.

Sera saw it clearly this time.

Not just the result—

The cause.

"…You're changing it," she whispered, her eyes narrowing as realization began to take shape. "You're not just reacting… you're affecting it."

Suho didn't respond.

Because she wasn't wrong.

The creature turned toward him fully now, its movements becoming more aggressive, less controlled as if it recognized the threat he posed. The glowing lines across its body pulsed faster, the instability within it growing more visible.

The dungeon itself was reacting.

The pressure increased again.

The space around them distorted slightly, like a reflection in disturbed water.

And for a brief moment—

Something deeper stirred.

Suho felt it.

A familiar presence.

Faint.

Distant.

But unmistakable.

His eyes sharpened.

"…So it's connected."

Sera didn't understand what he meant, but she didn't ask. Not now. Not when the creature in front of them shifted its stance again, preparing for another attack that felt far heavier than the last.

This time—

They couldn't hold back.

The fight had already crossed the line.

And whatever came next—

Wouldn't stay hidden for long.
