(Jay's POV)
The long flight back from Manila to London felt like it lasted for days. Keifer and I were so tired that we did not even talk much on the private jet. My body felt heavy. My mind was spinning with everything that had happened in the Philippines. There had been so many family dinners, so much loud laughing, and that one very bad moment where a bowl of shrimp landed on an old man's bald head. It was a good trip, but it was a very long one.
When the jet finally touched down on the dark, wet London tarmac, the cold air hit my face. It woke me up for a second. We got into our car and drove straight to our house. The house was quiet and warm.
"We are finally home, Wifey," Keifer whispered. His voice sounded deep and very tired.
"Yes, Hubby. Finally," I said.
Now I have also accepted my fate by calling him hubby because I have literally no escape.
We did not even change into our nightclothes properly. We just kicked off our shoes, dropped our bags on the floor, and fell onto the big, soft bed. Keifer pulled me close to his chest. His long arms wrapped around my waist, and he tucked his chin over my head. I smelled his familiar scent of clean soap and expensive wood. It was the best feeling in the world. We fell asleep cuddling each other, completely exhausted from the long journey across the world.
The next morning, the bright London sun woke us up. The lazy vacation feeling was instantly gone. It was time to go back to work. We both got out of bed and started to get ready for our day. We put on our sharp, formal suits. I wore a dark navy blue pantsuit that made me look tall and strong. Keifer wore a perfectly fitted blue suit (always copying me) with a crisp white shirt. We looked like two very important bosses, which we were.
Even though we had to go to two different office buildings, we stayed close. All day long, we sent each other phone updates every hour.
10:00 AM: "I am in my first board meeting. Everyone is smiling," I texted him.
10:05 AM: "Good luck, Wifey. I am signing these boring financial papers. Miss you," he replied.
11:00 AM: "Just finished a call with the New York team," Keifer sent.
11:02 AM: "Great job, Mr. Watson . I am drinking my second cup of black coffee now," I sent back.
We managed our companies very nicely. It felt good to be back in control. I was the new CEO of Mariano Corporation, and he was the head of Watson Enterprises. We were a powerful team, both in life and in business.
A few days passed by very quickly. The big day was coming closer. We were planning to merge Watson Enterprises and Mariano Corporation into one massive global company. It was a lot of hard work, but we were almost at the finish line.
One morning, we were in front of the big bedroom mirror, getting ready as usual. I was fixing the collar of my white shirt when I noticed Keifer in the mirror. He was not moving. He was just standing there with a dark, unhappy look on his handsome face. He was tieing his tie very slowly, and his brow was furrowed.
"What is wrong, Keifer ?" I asked, turning around to face him. "You look like someone stole your favourite toy."
Keifer sighed loudly. He dropped his hands and looked straight into my eyes. "I do not think you should go to the office today, Jay. Just stay home. Please?"
I chuckled softly. I walked over to him and fixed his tie for him, patting his chest playfully. "Oh, I see. You just want me to stay by your side every single second. Are you getting needy, Mr. Watson?"
"I am serious, Jay," he said, but his lips twitched a little bit. "I just have a bad feeling in my stomach. A very bad feeling. Just stay here with me. We can watch movies and eat junk food."
"We cannot do that," I said, laughing at his silly face. "It is only a matter of two days. Just two days! After that, every single legal document will be completed. We will finally shift into our huge new company together. We will share a giant corner office. You will see my face all the time, whether you like it or not."
Keifer looked down at me. He looked worried, but he also knew he could not win this fight. "You are so stubborn, Wifey," he said softly.
He leaned down and pressed a long, warm kiss against my forehead. His lips felt soft against my skin. "Take good care of yourself today, okay? Do not skip lunch."
"You too, Keifer ," I said with a big smile.
I grabbed my leather briefcase and my phone. I walked out of the front door with a happy heart. The sky was a bit grey, but I felt like I was on top of the world. I got into the back seat of my black luxury car. My driver, an old and careful man, started the engine and drove out onto the busy London roads.
As the car moved smoothly through the morning traffic, I opened my tablet. I started checking the new financial statistics and profit charts for the company merger. As I looked at the complicated numbers, a small smile came to my face. I started to wonder about myself. When did I become so serious? I thought. A few years ago, I was just a girl who liked to hang out and have fun. Now, I am a big CEO running a huge empire. Life changes so fast. The car stopped at a big red light near a main crossroads. I kept reading my tablet, feeling completely safe.
Then, everything happened in one tiny second.
The light turned green, and my driver started to move forward. Suddenly, there was a loud, horrible sound of screeching tyres. I looked up quickly from my tablet. My eyes went wide with fear.
A massive, heavy delivery truck was rushing straight toward us from the right side. It was going way too fast. It did not stop at the red light.
"Madam! Look out!" the driver yelled.
But it was too late. The giant metal truck hit the right side of our car with a terrible, booming crash. That was the exact side where I was sitting. The glass of the window shattered into a thousand tiny pieces. The metal of the door bent inward like paper. My body was thrown violently across the seat. My head hit the hard side pillar with a loud thud.
Pain flared through my whole body for one split second, and then everything went completely black. I was unconscious on the spot.
(Keifer's POV)
My heart was beating in a strange, fast rhythm all morning. I could not focus on my work. I sat at my big desk, looking at a contract, but the words just looked like black spots. My mind kept going back to Jay. I kept remembering how she smiled at me this morning, calling me needy.
I am not needy, I thought to myself with a small smile. I am just in love.
Suddenly, my personal phone started to ring on the desk. It was loud and angry. I picked it up without looking.
"Jay? Are you done with your meetings?"
"Mr. Watson?" a shaking, panting voice came through the speaker. It was not Jay. It was her driver.
My body went completely stiff. "Yes. This is Keifer. Why are you calling from Jay's phone? Where is she?"
"Sir... there has been a very bad accident," the driver gasped. I could hear loud sirens and screaming people in the background. "A big truck. It hit us from the right. Madam Jay... she is not waking up. There is a lot of blood, sir. The ambulance is taking her to the city hospital right now."
My phone almost slipped out of my hand. My whole world stopped spinning. The air left my lungs as if someone had punched me with all their strength.
"I am coming," I choked out.
I did not take my coat. I did not tell my secretary where I was going. I just ran out of my office like a crazy man. I took the lift down, jumped into my car, and drove to the hospital faster than I had ever driven in my entire life. My hands were shaking so hard on the steering wheel.
Please be okay. Please be okay, Jay, my mind kept screaming. Do not leave me. You promised me two days. You promised we would be together.
The hospital smelled like medicine and fear. I rushed through the white corridors, my shoes making loud slapping sounds on the clean floor. I found the emergency area and saw Jay's driver.
The poor man was sitting on a plastic chair. He had a white bandage on his arm and some small cuts on his face, but he was awake and breathing. But Jay was not there. She was behind two big doors that said 'No Entry.'
I walked up to the driver. My voice sounded dark and dangerous, even to my own ears. "Who did this?" I demanded. "Who led to this accident?"
The driver looked up at me with sad, fearful eyes. "Sir, I am so sorry. It happened so fast. We were just driving normally. Then this huge truck came out of nowhere from the right side. It did not even try to brake. It hit right where Madam Jay was sitting."
"Was it an accident?" I growled, my fists clenching tight inside my pockets.
The driver shook his head slowly. He looked around to make sure no one was listening. "Sir... the truck did not stop after the crash. It just sped away. And before we moved, I saw a black car parked across the street. It looked like it was watching us. I think... I think it may be the work of Madam's rival."
As soon as he said those words, my eyes turned completely dark. A cold, burning anger filled my chest. I knew exactly who it was. There was only one man who was bad enough to do something like this.
Collin Venas.
He was the CEO of a dirty, dishonest rival company. For a long time, he had been holding a deep grudge against me because I had declined his business deals involving illegal goods. I had thrown him out of my office like trash. Now that Jay had become the new CEO of Mariano Corporation, he saw her as a soft target. He could not hurt me, so he tried to hurt the person I loved more than life itself. He had planned this hit to destroy us.
I walked a few steps away from the driver and pulled out my phone. My heart felt like a piece of ice, cold and hard. I called my head of security.
"Find Collin Venas," I said into the phone. My voice was very quiet, but it was deadlier than a knife. "Take your best men. Go right now and get that fucking bastard Collin. Drag him to the secret building downtown. Do not let him run away."
"Yes, Mr. Watson. We will get him," the security head replied.
"Good. Tell him that I am coming," I whispered, my teeth grinding together. "I will personally show him what happens when you touch Watson's wife. He wanted to cross paths with Jay. He forgot that I am not just a reputable CEO. I can become a monster if anyone hurts my family. I will make him regret every single breath he takes."
I ended the call. I felt like a dark storm was living inside my body. I wanted to break everything around me. I wanted to tear the world apart for what they did to my sweet Jay.
Just then, the big doors opened. A doctor in a green scrub suit walked out. He looked tired and very serious.
I rushed over to him and grabbed his shoulders. I did not care about manners anymore. "How is she? How is my wife? Tell me!"
The doctor gently took my hands off his shoulders. "Calm down, sir. Please. Your wife is out of danger now. Her life is safe. The physical injuries are not too deep. We fixed the cuts, and she does not have any broken bones."
I let out a huge breath. My heart felt a little bit lighter. "Thank God. She is alright. Can I see her?"
"Wait, Mr. Watson," the doctor said, holding up a hand. His face did not look happy. "She is alright now... but there is something else. Something very serious."
My heart stopped again. The small piece of hope I had just felt disappeared into thin air. "What? What has happened to her?"
The doctor sighed. "The impact of the truck was very hard on the right side of her head. She suffered a major blow. Because of this, she has a memory loss. Her mind has blocked out her past to protect itself."
I felt like the ground beneath my feet was suddenly slipping away. I could not breathe. "Memory loss? For how long?"
"If everything goes smoothly and she stays calm, it might take a week to recover her mind," the doctor explained in a soft, sad voice. "But you must be very careful. Do not force her to remember too fast. If her brain gets too much stress, she might get permanent damage. If that happens... she will never remember her past. She will stay like this forever."
The doctor looked at me with pity. "This means she may not recognize you too, sir. To her, you are a complete stranger right now."
I could not hear anything else. The doctor's words were like heavy stones hitting my chest. She will not recognize me? Jay? My Wifey? The girl who meant world to me?
My heart felt so sad, so broken, that I wanted to fall to the floor and cry like a child. Every beautiful memory we had shared—our love story, our jokes, our quiet cuddles on the jet, the silly shrimp incident—all of it was gone from her head. I was completely alone in our love.
The doctor let me go inside her room.
The private room was very quiet. The only sound was the slow, steady beep of the heart monitor. I walked inside with shaky steps. My eyes immediately found her.
Jay was lying on the white hospital bed. She looked so small, so pale, and so fragile under the big white blanket. There was a white bandage wrapped around her head, and her beautiful face had a few small blue bruises. Seeing her like this made my soul ache with a deep, terrible pain.
I walked over to the side of her bed. I sat down slowly on the small clinic chair next to her. I reached out with a trembling hand and picked up her right hand. It felt cold. I held it tightly between both of my warm palms, bringing it up to my lips. I pressed a soft kiss on her knuckles, letting my tears finally fall onto her skin.
"Jay," I whispered into the quiet room. My voice was breaking. "Please, Wifey. You have to be strong. You have to come back to me. You have to recognize me when you wake up. If you don't... it will be impossible for me to survive even an hour without you in this dark world. You are my whole life. Please do not forget your Keifer ."
I sat there for a long time, just holding her hand and looking at her face, praying with all my heart.
After some minutes, I felt a tiny movement. Her fingers twitched inside my hands.
My breath caught in my throat. I stood up quickly, leaning over her bed. "Jay? Can you hear me?"
Slowly, her long eyelashes fluttered. Her eyelids were heavy, but she forced them open. Her dark eyes, which were usually so bright and full of life, looked dull and confused. She blinked a few times against the bright white light of the room.
She turned her head very slowly on the pillow. Her eyes moved around the strange room, looking at the white walls, the machines, and finally, they landed on me.
I held my breath. My heart was beating so hard it hurt. I tried to give her a small, reassuring smile, even though my tears were still wet on my cheeks. "Jay... it's me."
She looked at my face for a long, quiet moment. There was no love in her eyes. There was no recognition. There was only fear, confusion, and a deep blankness that broke my heart into a million tiny pieces.
She pulled her hand away from my grip slowly, shrinking back into the big white pillows.
Her dry lips moved, and she spoke in a small, whispering voice.
"Who are you?".....
